When I first started dog training as a hobby, I found that there was so much information across the internet from all different kinds of trainers who each claimed that they had the secret answer to fixing all of my dog’s problems.

There were so many different opinions and takes on dog training that it was hard for me to know what to do next.

Corrective tools like e-collars left my dogs confused, nervous, and didn’t really get to the root of the problem, while treats sometimes didn’t even work for my dogs! It was confusing…

But now, I am a certified dog trainer who uses gentle, positive, and fun methods (for both the human AND the dog) that create REAL RESULTS and effectively changes unwanted behaviors!

If you’re in a similar place right now and need some guidance with your own dog, book a FREE phone consult with me today at www.thepolitemuttdogtraining.com and I will help you determine which of my services is the best fit for you and your dog so we can fix those unwanted behaviors ASAP! - Genevieve 🐶🐾

Go to bed is one of my favorite things to teach dogs for a few reasons:

1️⃣ it can help prevent jumping on guests (after lots of practice of course)

2️⃣ it can help redirect your dog from doing something you don’t like (barking, jumping on counters, etc.)

3️⃣ it can help teach your dog to relax when they might be overly excited or struggling to sleep

And more!

Struggling with some of the scenarios mentioned above with your own dog? DM me today so we can start working together and develop a customized training plan to fit you and your dogs needs! 😊✨

Does your dog pull on leash? These two games might help you out on walks! 🐶💕

How to play:

1️⃣ The “find it” game: sprinkle some of your dog’s favorite treats in the grass and say “find it”. Your dog should then use his nose to sniff out the food!

I like using this game throughout my walks as a fun activity and to help decrease stress or anxiety during/after triggering events.

2️⃣ The “up, down” game by Leslie McDevitt: place a treat in front of your dog’s paws. Wait for your dog to look up at you after eating the treat, mark with a “yes” or a click, and then place another treat down. Repeat until your dog is comfortable making eye contact and is focused on you!

I like to use this game at the beginning of my walks or whenever my dog might pull or get overly excited to keep their attention on me.

Positive/force-free training not working for your dog? Here are some possible reasons why:

1️⃣ Using bribery instead of positive reinforcement. If you have to have food in your hand to get your dog to perform a desired behavior, you’re using bribery, not positive reinforcement. Rewards are meant to be used AFTER the behavior occurs, not before.

2️⃣ Not managing or preventing unwanted behaviors. In order for force-free training to work, we use must use management tools to prevent the reinforcement of undesired behaviors while we train a replacement behavior. For example, if your dog is jumping on guests, you might use a leash or baby gate to prevent your dog from performing the jumping behavior while teaching your dog to keep all four paws on the floor. If we didn’t use management to prevent the jumping, the dog would be able to practice the jumping and erase any progress we had in teaching the new behavior.

3️⃣ Progressing too quickly for the dog. Unfortunately, dogs don’t generalize well. If you trained your dog to sit in your house and then asked them to sit at the dog park in front of 20 other dogs and people, they probably won’t know how to respond. You need to slowly add in distractions and work up to sitting at the dog park overtime in order for the training to be effective.

4️⃣ Using kibble or other low-value foods. When you’re first training your dog a new behavior or training in a new environment with more distractions, you NEED to be using high value items to reinforce your dog’s behavior, or they will likely choose their environment over you. They need to learn that working for you is worth it.

What does it mean to give your dog a “job”?

To me, this means giving your dog a way to express their natural sniffing, scavenging, chasing, and chewing behaviors in a safe and fun way!

If your dog is often hyperactive or still “on” after your walks, these mentally stimulating activities could be the thing you’re missing in your routine!

Give them a try and let me know how it goes!

Just got a new puppy? Start by teaching these three important behaviors!

1️⃣ Recall: This is possibly the most important cue you could teach your dog. It could save their life! Make sure you’re using the highest value treats for this one and throw a huge party when your dog comes back to you to add value to your recall.

2️⃣ Touch: This is great for redirecting your dog off of furniture, chewing on potentially dangerous objects, and can even be used to prevent jumping! This is usually the first behavior I teach puppies since it’s easy and a great introduction to training.

3️⃣ Loose-Leash Walking: It’s important to teach your puppy how to walk politely on leash so you don’t end up with an adult dog who pulls you down the street! Start in your home and over time progress up to an actual walk!

The first and most important part of every training plan is meeting your dog’s needs and finding ways to enrich your dog’s life.

Why? Because boredom and a lack of mental stimulation is often the cause of the most common behaviors problems like chewing, barking, digging, etc.

You have to be meeting your dog’s needs FIRST and then you can start training more desirable behaviors if necessary.

How do you do this?

1️⃣ Ensure you are giving your dog proper exercise daily. 30 minute sniffy walks with a long line are my favorite way of doing this!

2️⃣ Find activities that your specific dog enjoys and use them to your advantage! Not every dog is the same and not every dog will find the same things enriching.

For example, my sheepadoodle, Delilah, isn’t a huge fan of puzzle toys or kongs. Instead, Delilah prefers playing with the hose and exploring in our backyard. That is her idea of enrichment. Whereas my lab, Winston, loves puzzle toys and kongs and would probably choose them over playing in the yard any day.

Each dog is unique. Find what gives your specific dog joy and try to give them a few of those things daily, whether that’s puzzle toys, a kong, playing, sniffing, walking, training, etc.

Teaching your dog how to walk nicely on leash requires lots of practice and patience from you as a handler!

When teaching your dog to walk with a loose leash, it’s essential that you focus on teaching your dog what you want them to do (walk with a loose leash), rather than focusing on correcting them for what you don’t want them to do (pulling). Focus on rewarding them for their attention, rewarding them for a loose leash, and most importantly, fulfilling their needs.

Let’s break these steps down further…

1️⃣ Meeting your dogs needs BEFORE your walk will give you a less energetic, relaxed dog who is more willing to offer you behaviors that you like! Some ideas of meeting your dogs needs might look like: sniffing at the beginning of your walk, chasing a flirt pole, playing a game of fetch, having a fun training session, etc.

2️⃣ We can’t tell you how important it is to reward your dog for giving you their attention! The more you reward your dog for checking-in, the sooner your dog will learn that being close to you and giving you attention is what gets them good things.

3️⃣ Let your dog know how great you think it is when they walk next to you! This is how you teach your dog that walking on a loose leash is a fantastic choice that they get rewarded for and that you’d like to see more of!

The more you reward your dog for behaviors you like, the more you will see those behaviors. Remember that reinforcement drives behavior!!!

Note: be sure to start teaching your dog to walk nicely on leash in a low distraction environment, ideally in your home. Starting outside might be too overwhelming for your dog and can make training a lot harder for the both of you.

We’ve mentioned before that we use force-free dog training methods, but what does that really mean?

If you’ve never heard of force-free dog training or maybe have some concerns about it, we’ve got you covered!

Simply put, force-free dog training means that any methods of changing behavior using discomfort (emotionally or physically) is avoided. We care deeply about the effectiveness of our training as well as the emotional and physical well-being of the dogs we work with.
