Routines 101: Feeding & Potty Training

Potty training just might be one of the biggest challenges owners face when bringing a puppy home. It is extremely tedious and not for the faint of heart. So it’s incredibly important to have a consistent plan if you want potty training to stick. Eating and bodily functions are connected; making following a meal time routine equally important!

It’s a little dog streak! Back to back board and trains of pint size pals 🤍

Welcome ‘Emma’ the 1.5 year old Cavapoo! She just started her 2 week Tailblazer program. This little bean comes to training already having an idea of her commands. The action of doing the commands is fairly quick, but Emma needs to work on the art of holding commands for more than a quick second. Emma’s family are big campers and want to make sure she is reliable on their adventures!

You’ve probably heard it over and over “CRATE YOUR DOG/PUPPY!” And it’s true, you really should! Crating your puppy is a vital step for transitioning into a new home and setting them up for success in life. A crate is essentially like a puppy babysitter; it provides a safe space for your puppy when you’re not able to.

Only 2 days in to the work week and it’s already BUSY!! 4 lessons down and 3 more to go later this week.

Bambino 💥 Almost 2 year old Brussels/Pug mix: He has some of the most extreme reactivity I’ve seen. Paired with no chill or focus, there’s a whole lotta firepower in this little guy!

Violet 💜 1 year old Pittie: Sweet and sassy girl refreshed her b/t skills while her big sister Lily (not pictured 😫 I forgot to snap one) started learning a proper heel!

Rue 🦘 5 month GSD/Husky/Golden Mix: Cutest girl started her Puppy Embarkment 2.0. Her humans are having a baby soon and want to make sure Rue is the best big doggie sister she can be!

Welcome home, Miss Camouflaged in Chamomile, aka “Cammie.” 🌼 Yes… we got a new puppy🥹 A double meaning name: after cute little flowers and the name of Andy’s military uniforms. We do have a military theme after all.

A new baby AND a new puppy? Does that make me crazy? Possibly?! 🤪

I’ll never not want a puppy and my puppy fever certainly didn’t s***f out just because I had a baby in January. I got so lucky finding Cammie last weekend. This sweet creamy little girl is 22.4 lbs of perfection. AKC, health tested and guaranteed. The vet was so pleased with how happy and healthy Cammie is. The staff was amazed by her gentle demeanor even while being pinched, poked, and prodded.

Stay tuned for a series of post starring Cammie as we integrate her into our pack. We’ll highlight tips and tricks from my Puppy EmBARKment programs. 🐶

Say 👋🏻 to my newest little friends, Alex and Milo!

These boys had a traumatic experience as pups at a local open play group and then were undersocialized, so the world became a big scary place. They learned to handle their big feelings by big reactions like growling, barking, and in some cases even nipping.

Their mom knew they needed help and wanted Alex and Milo to start enjoying more than just the comforts of home. The boys joined me over the weekend to began their 4 week Nervy/Reactive Pooch Board and Train where our main focus will be changing their mindset with proper socialization, confidence, and obedience.

Little recap from last night’s training Packwalk! These meet ups are a great opportunity for dog’s to continue their “education,” by practicing their skills around other dogs in a semi-controlled fashion with professional guidance.

Little Coco is a 12 week old Goldendoodle who just started her Puppy EmBARKment 2.0 program.

As first time dog owner, Coco’s mom wanted to make sure they had the right knowledge to navigate bringing a new puppy into the family and how to set Coco up for a happy life. Over our 4 sessions Coco’s family will learn:

This cute little thang is Miss Chloe!

She joined me earlier this week to start her 3 week Profound Hound. She may be little, but she is mighty when she zig zags and pulls on her leash, making her a tripping hazard for her family members. Chloe also needs a little more guidance and structure to help create a more solid potty training routine. She’ll be working on her recall, manners, and overall basic obedience while she’s here. Stay tuned to see her progress!

Hellllloooo Goose! 🪿

He’s joined me for a 3 week Profound Hound. Goose is a goofy, sweet, and very smart boy who already knows some of his basic commands, but when he’s distracted he has zero chill or reliability. When this boy’s nose turns on, his ears turn off. He’s an intense puller on the leash and he’s even become reactive with loud vocalizing at the sight of other dogs. He also loves to give chase to almost anything that moves.

Goose is constantly on the go. His dad even said “it’s kinda sad he can’t settle.” Well that’s what he’s here to learn! As a pointer we don’t want to diminish his love to chase, but we do want him to know there’s a time and place for it. The neighbor pooch walking past the driveway isn’t it. Goose will work on strengthening his stability in obedience, sharpening his focus, polishing his manners, and calming his mindset.

Maternity leave is coming to end in a few weeks and training will be in full swing!

Booked 5 board and trains in the last 24 hours for my team and I 🤯 2 GSP’s, 2 Havanese, and a mini poodle! As a small scale training company that’s pretty exciting! So blessed and grateful to continue doing what I love to do; help dogs and owners find the balance between compliance and coping!

This evening’s final introduction might seem like de ja vu!

Say hello, again, to Niko the Boston Terrier! 👋🏻 This cute boy started his Puppy EmBARKment 2.0 sessions a few months ago. His mom has been doing a good job following her homework; he definitely knows the act of going into his commands, but the staying in them is difficult for this excited boy. His mom knew at the start of his EmBARKment, she wanted to set him up for the most success and also enrolled him for a 2 week Tailblazer board and train. Overall, he’s a fairly confident pup and a smart one to boot. We’ll be working on his stability and teaching him how to work through some of the few moments of uncertainty he has.

Kona Loca Training is officially 1 year old! 🎉

A scary leap of faith in myself to quit the comforts of a 7 year job with a prominent and “major competitor” in the dog training industry, but we made it to our first huge milestone! In the last year I have been blessed to continue training dogs in my style, book out enough to contract 3 trainers of my own, and enjoy more time with my growing family. I truly am blessed and thank each of you who have supported me on this path. 🩵💛💚

Koda just graduated from his Tailblazer program! As a young pup he was adopted from the streets of Mexico and then Covid hit. Over the years Koda’s mom and dad have done some training with him-very smart boy- but with a new bundle on its way, they knew he needed more. So to Kona Loca Training he came!

Koda joined us with pseudo self-esteem or a false confidence. He had become defensive and reactive like barking or lunging at dogs and even nipped at some people. He tried to seem tough, but deep down this sweet boy was insecure. He needed to see not everyone was out to get him and how to make better choices when he is unsure. With guidance Koda’s confidence grew and his obedience strengthened to help him navigate the world! 🐶

THIS. THIS is why…

I set boundaries with my dogs and enforce them, even the small infractions. And why I stress to my clients to do the same. Moments like this is when it truly counts-being pregnant, walking two large breed dogs tied to my waist- my dogs understand and appreciate me. I hold more value to them than a group of vocal, pulling, aroused, and potentially dangerous dogs. Oh boy, was my heart pounding, but I can trust Arlo and OC and they can trust me.

🏕️This is Arlo’s first camping trip and OC’s first in a couple years. Check the comments to see what we still practice on the daily that helped set us up for this successful passing.

Zeus graduated his Tailblazer 2 week board and train this week! 🐾

This cute boy was pretty mellow and easy going, but in new environments he was a little nervous. He’d pace and bark when he wasn’t sure of something. Now he can hang out and enjoy his surroundings without letting his big voice do the talking.

Zeus-y boi!!! ❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️

This handsome guy might look familiar. We met him a few months back for his Puppy EmBARKment and have seen him grow through a couple puppy sessions. Now he’s here for his Tailblazer 2 week program!

Zeus is pretty mellow at home and overall a good boy, but has recently developed some insecurities around new things and experiences. When he’s unsure of something, he becomes reactive, but he’s just a baby 🥹

He’s here to hone on his obedience and build his confidence so he doesn’t feel the need to use his big boy bark.

Nova is here for her Profound Hound 3 week board and train! Feels like this day has been a long time coming since first seeing her during her initial Puppy EmBARKment session.
She’s not that little floofball anymore 🥹

Her mama has done a very good job at socializing and teaching her some commands & tricks. Miss Nova is a very confident girl and often times strong-headed or demanding, which can lead to barking, overexcitement, and no impulse control. She loves to put anything she can in her mouth like a little vacuum.

She’s quick as a whip though! With a steady list of commands started, she’s here to learn some life skills like settling and strengthening her focus when she’s overly excited.

As one pup works on finishing up his board and train, the next one begins hers!

Our newest Tailblazer is Zoe the Sheepadoodle! 🐑🐩She’s not quite a year old and already the makings of a great dog. She’s easy going, friendly, and even knows most of her commands at home. Zoe can be a little timid around new things so she’s here to solidify commands and build her confidence around distractions! Stay tuned to see how she does the next two weeks with us!
