Instead of using food bowls for my personal dog, Willow, I make dinner and breakfast a bit of a game to keep her challenged and/or tune into her natural dog behavior. Because she is a highly intelligent breed (most days lol), she gets stir crazy if I don’t keep her brain busy. This also helps slow down her eating, which can lead to bloat.
Breeds like #dobermans, #germansheperds, #bordercollies, #malanois etc. that are known to be very intelligent and high energy really need mental exercises just as much, if not more, than physical. If you take your dog running every night but they still have energy after, this is why. Think of training for a marathon; the more you build up your endurance, the more energy you have. While sitting in front of a computer for an hour working can be exhausting.
These are not the only breeds I recommend mental enrichment for. I recommend it for ALL breeds! There are also plenty of other ways to enrich your dog while letting them use their natural instincts too, get creative and have fun with your dog!
