We still need entries for this months Dog of the month! Post a picture of your Frenchie in the comments to be entered to win!

February’s breed of the month is the French Bulldog, affectionately known as the Frenchie! This breed is most recognized by their large “bat ears” that are the breed’s trademark feature. This breed has gained immense popularity in recent years. In 2023 the French Bulldog overtook the Labrador as the most popular breed of dog as ranked by the AKC. Before 2023, Labradors held the top spot for 31 years.
Frenchies are short coated and usually between 24-28 pounds with a flat face and large, dark eyes. They are good dogs for apartment living because they usually do not require a lot of exercise and are typically not big barkers. They are not good swimmers due to their build so they should be supervised well when around water! Frenchies have been known to be stubborn when it comes to training; it is important to start them from a young age and be consistent!
Unfortunately this adorable and goofy breed does tend to come with quite a few health problems so make sure you do your research before getting one of these dogs. Dogs with short noses are known as “brachycephalic.” Brachycephaly results in deformation of the upper airway tract and leads to obstruction of breathing. This, in turn, can lead to many breathing related heath problems as well as complications under anesthesia. French Bulldogs are also more prone to skin and ear infections due to the excessive folds in their skin.
Frenchies are lovable little potato dogs! They will curl up on your lap and snooze away or go for a ride in the car and run errands with you! They just love to be with their person!

Don’t forget to share a photo of your Lab in the comments on the original post before the end of the month! One random, lucky lab will be our January Dog of the Month and have their photo proudly displayed in the lobby for the month of February and get a custom made bandana to sport around town!😍🏆

Our first Breed of the Month is the very well known and popular Labrador Retriever! These dogs are known for being friendly, outgoing, and high spirited. They come in three breed standard colors: yellow, black, and chocolate and typically weigh anywhere from 50-85 pounds when fully grown. They are famous for being great family dogs because they love to be active and play but can also lounge for hours on the couch. Labs tend to love swimming, going on long walks, and playing fetch for hours! While labs do not have long fur they do have a notorious “double coat” which makes them high shedders. Be ready to do a lot of vacuuming if you own one of these dogs! Originally bred for duck retrieving in Newfoundland, (no, not in Labrador!) labs developed this water repelling coat as well as their infamous “otter tail” to help them swim better during the hunt!

Labs tend to be extremely intelligent but this, combined with their high energy and love for play, can be a recipe for disaster if you don’t channel that intelligence into something positive. Enrolling puppies in training classes early and continuing with training as they get older is very important! Their intelligence along with an “eager to please” attitude makes them one of the top choices for service dog training as well as search and rescue and bomb and drug detection work.

Labrador Retrievers can be prone to health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia as well as some eye conditions. When buying a puppy from a breeder, it is important to find one who screens for these types of breed-related issues.

Labrador Retrievers are giant goof balls so if you want to add a lot of laughs, love, and fur to your home, they might be the breed for you!

🚨🚨DON'T FORGET to show us your lovely Labs in the comments below to be entered to be CVC's featured Dog of the Month for January!
