Don’t forget to share a photo of your Lab in the comments on the original post before the end of the month! One random, lucky lab will be our January Dog of the Month and have their photo proudly displayed in the lobby for the month of February and get a custom made bandana to sport around town!😍🏆

Our first Breed of the Month is the very well known and popular Labrador Retriever! These dogs are known for being friendly, outgoing, and high spirited. They come in three breed standard colors: yellow, black, and chocolate and typically weigh anywhere from 50-85 pounds when fully grown. They are famous for being great family dogs because they love to be active and play but can also lounge for hours on the couch. Labs tend to love swimming, going on long walks, and playing fetch for hours! While labs do not have long fur they do have a notorious “double coat” which makes them high shedders. Be ready to do a lot of vacuuming if you own one of these dogs! Originally bred for duck retrieving in Newfoundland, (no, not in Labrador!) labs developed this water repelling coat as well as their infamous “otter tail” to help them swim better during the hunt!

Labs tend to be extremely intelligent but this, combined with their high energy and love for play, can be a recipe for disaster if you don’t channel that intelligence into something positive. Enrolling puppies in training classes early and continuing with training as they get older is very important! Their intelligence along with an “eager to please” attitude makes them one of the top choices for service dog training as well as search and rescue and bomb and drug detection work.

Labrador Retrievers can be prone to health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia as well as some eye conditions. When buying a puppy from a breeder, it is important to find one who screens for these types of breed-related issues.

Labrador Retrievers are giant goof balls so if you want to add a lot of laughs, love, and fur to your home, they might be the breed for you!

🚨🚨DON'T FORGET to show us your lovely Labs in the comments below to be entered to be CVC's featured Dog of the Month for January!

We have some fun new things coming at you for 2025! The first of which is a new feature that we are calling CVC’s Dog Breed of the Month! 💙🐶
Each month we will have a new featured breed that we will tell you some fun facts about as well as some common associated health problems. In the comments of the post, please share your favorite picture of your own dog of that breed! At the end of the month we will have a random drawing of all the people who shared photos and the winner will be the “Dog of the Month” at the clinic! They will have their photo printed out and put up in the lobby of the clinic on display and will get a free bandana to sport around town showing off their title!
Be on the look out because the first breed will be posted in the next couple of days!🎊
