Critters of the week. Muscovy ducks! You will notice we enjoy these birds if you visit the vet clinic!

These are a breed of duck that originated in South America. Although they are ducks, they don't breed naturally with breeds such as Pekins or Mallards. If this occurs, you get what is known as a Mule Duck. Which, like mules, are sterile and hardy.

These ducks feed on plants, reptiles, and bugs including ticks and mosquitos! How about that!!

They live around water, but aren't as adapted to water as other ducks are. They prefer to roost on tree or off the ground as seen in the pictures below. They also come in a variety of colors. They are larger breeds.

Keep on the lookout for more interesting facts!

Meet Debbie the critter of the week.

Debbie is a Dexter cross heifer purchased from Damascus Farms in Williamsburg, KY. She is blonde and will be 2 years old this summer. She is currently pregnant with our highland black bull and due to calf this spring! She is one of our favorites as she is full of personality and is always eager for the feed bucket.

Did you know it takes a cow approximately 283 days (9 months) to have a calf? Once a calf is born it has 12 to 24 hours to ingest colostrum. Colostrum mother's first milk which is thicker and is full of antibodies and special nutrients to help protect the calf from illness and allow it to grow.

We will post pictures of her calf when it arrives!

Many of you have seen these guys tunning stound the farm, Biscuit and Gravy! The clinic duo! They are the critters of the week here at Creekside.

Although they are not actual brothers, they have a bond and are often found together or with one of the other fifteen cats on the farm. Biscuit came from the animal shelter and Gravy was given to us from a friend. Both are lynx point in color, meaning that they have striped legs and ears with a lighter colored body.

If you want a cat or kitten, please look at your local animal shelters. They have so many beautiful cats to choose from! Most shelters have the cats altered and up to date on vaccinations at time of adoption saving you time and money! It’s a win-win for everyone!

Enjoy your weekend!

Everyone say hello to the critter of the week, Sky! Sky is a 6 year old registered Tennessee Walking Horse mare. She is considered a bay tobiano.

For those who are new to horses, bay is a base color that is a red or brown with black points (legs and mane/tail). The bay color can vary from dark bay to light bay. Sky is more of a mahogany bay. Tobiano is defined by having white pigment/coat (spotted) that covers at least one spot of the back. There are other forms of spotted horses, known as overo and sabinos, neither of which have white over the back.

Tobiano is the most common spotted gene for horses. If a horse tests homogyzous, meaning they have two copies of the tobiano gene, every foal, no matter the other parent’s color, will be spotted. Heterogyzous parent, carrying one copy of the gene, will have a 50% chance of having a spotted foal.

Sky tested heterogyzous, therefore she has a 50% chance of having a spotted foal like herself. She is an excellent mother and a beautifully built animal. She is one of Dr. Travis' favorites in the field. She loves treats and spending time with her herdmates.
