We can NOT stress enough you are raising a dog not a puppy. You want to raise your puppy with the end goal of the dog you want. Ethyl just turned 11 months old. We really wanted a well balanced, social, and confident adult dog. We worked hard to never allow behaviors we wouldn't want from an adult dog. It may appear cute as a puppy but remember that behavior is becoming a habit and will continue into adulthood. We never allowed Ethyl to chase the vacuum. Trust us she wanted to! Girls got insane prey drive. I'd say our goal of being able to vaccum stress free has been accomplished. She is not in any command this is just how she behaves when a vaccum is present.
Recall
Miss Lelu is here for a board and train. She is a smart girl who uses that to her advantage. We are working on channeling that inner smarts for constructive things instead of destructive 🤣 Lelu is rocking her recall in the back yard so time for more distractions for this girl.
The beginning may be a little hard to watch but please watch the full video. Hilde is quite honestly terrified in the beginning. Although she was raised around other dog's and lives with another dog now.
She was NOT comfortable socializing. Avery (cropped eared bully) was not rude but the moment any pressure was felt by Hilde she reacted in a fearful way.
Notice when Ethyl (black lab) was trying to get Hilde to play while in the pen. All of Ethyl's body language was loose as a goose. She couldn't be saying I am no threat with any more ounce of her being. Notice Hilde's tail, it couldn't be anymore tucked if she tried.
We are huge advocates for proper puppy socialization. If Hilde had been thrown in with dogs who were not as respectful of her requests for space the end of this video would have been drastically different.
Blow dry
The importance of teaching your puppy/ dog to deal with "stress" should be one of your top priorities. Ethyl is a young girl. When we first started blow drying her at 10 weeks you would think it was the end of the world!
Sadly in life we all need to deal with stress it is just life. So we continued to work with her. We turned down the strength of the blow and paired it with peanut butter and look at us now! Full speed ahead!
She learned it's really not that bad. This is a priority for us as she has a thick coat. Moisture easily gets locked in after swimming or baths which can cause painful hot spots and other issues.
Nails
Miss Ethyl is one of our personal dogs. We have been working hard on teaching her to grow into a confident and well balanced dog. At 8 months old she is making huge strides to achieve those goals. In the beginning she is still a little more "squirmy" than our ultimate end goal for her nail trims. Her handling in general is getting better and better everyday. She's a wild girl who would rather be moving than sitting still so this is a huge accomplishment for Miss Wild Thing. Puppies don't just magically grow out of "bad behaviors". They need to be taught what we want them to do :) We want easy and stress free nail trims for both of us. Overgrown nails can break easily and also cause permanent structure damage so short nails are a must here ♥️
Socializing
Miss Olive 🫒 (frenchie) joins us for Puppy Day Camp ⛺️ once a week. Although she is a very social girl we make sure she is extra monitored. Why? Simply due to her size. We want her to socialize with big dogs so she grows up not being afraid but we also want to make sure she's safe. We have some large puppies who are also working on proper socializing. Although they wouldn't mean to hurt Olive they can quickly go over boarding playing as they are still also learning to play appropriately.

Dog Park
Today we headed to the dog park!
No we didn't go in.
Why?
Although we love the idea of a dog park sadly it's not always used the way it is intended to be used.
We are working on Ethyl simply existing around dogs playing. The girl LOVES other dogs. Truly she would have had no issues entering with the group we saw playing today. They were great dogs with great play etiquette.
Girl rocked watching others play. No barking or demanding behavior. She was able to chill and watch while remaining calm, cool, and collected just like we want. We want a playful dog but also a dog who can be neutral around dogs and hangout.
Recall
Recall we feel hands down the most IMPORTANT command.
This is our personal puppy Ethyl. She has a lot of big summer adventure plans and would really love to be off leash. We have strong feelings if you cannot recall your dog no matter what the distraction is. Then they have no business being off leash.
Chickens are a huge distraction for Ethyl as you can see. Girl LOVES to chase them. She's itching to make her feathered siblings run. Her recall was on point especially with Larry (white Floof head) really tempting her.
Ps: folks she's 6 months old. Your pup could listen like this too!
Dozer joins us for our Puppy Day Camp Program. This includes extra training which often focuses on handling. Dozer doesn't love it. He feels theirs much better things to do with his time rather then a nail trim. 🤣 That's okay to have those feelings but regardless it's a necessity of life.
Long nails can cause structure damage, pain, and so much more. One of the keys with puppies is even if they have a bit of a temper tantrum the "uncomfortable" situation doesn't stop. In this case the nail trimming. If he learns temper tantrums make it stop that's how he will respond to anything making him uncomfortable. This dude will be a rock star at nails in no time.
Recall
Ethyl is our personal puppy. We have really been focusing on confidence and social skills with less focused on obedience. She turns 6 months tomorrow and has a lot of adventures planned for the summer. We feel being off leash is a privilege for dogs and not a right. It is our responsibility to make sure no matter the distraction that Ethyl will recall. Ethyl is well on her way to having full off leash freedom. Extra thanks to our chickens who are really testing her. Ethyl LOVES the chickens.
Ethyl WILL be enjoying responsible off leash freedom this summer. Will your puppy or dog? They could!
