Come on out and join us at our Edible Garden Plant Sale on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, from 9am to Noon at Sweet Berry Farms LLC!!!

At this event, we'll have several edible plants including the Morus ‘Dwarf Everbearing' Mulberry.

The Mulberry Tree: A Gardener's Best Friend!

To start, the mulberry tree is exceptionally easy to grow. Here are some reasons why it is a gardener's best friend:

Hardiness: Mulberry trees can thrive in a range of climatic conditions from cold temperate zones to the tropics. This makes them a versatile choice for almost any type of garden.

Low Maintenance: Once established, mulberry trees require minimal care. They are generally resistant to pests and diseases and can grow in average soil conditions.

Fast Growth: These trees grow quickly, providing shade and fruit in a relatively short period. Some varieties can even bear fruit within the first year of planting.

Medicinal Benefits of the Mulberry

The health benefits of the mulberry tree extend far beyond its fruit. Here are some of the medicinal uses of various parts of the mulberry tree:

Leaves: Mulberry leaves are rich in antioxidants and have been used traditionally to regulate blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for people with diabetes. The leaves can be brewed into a tea that helps lower blood glucose levels and improves overall metabolic function.

Bark: The bark of the mulberry tree possesses anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Used in poultices, mulberry bark can help reduce skin inflammation and irritation.

Fruit: Mulberries are nutrient-dense, containing vitamins C and K, fiber, and iron. Eating mulberries can help support a healthy immune system, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and improve digestion. The fruit also possesses anti-aging properties due to its high antioxidant content.

At this event, we'll have several edible plants including the Rubus 'Natchez' Thornless Blackberry.

Natchez is a semi-erect, thornless variety that produces large, sweet berries each year. The berries store well for extended enjoyment. Natchez Thornless blackberries grow on summer-bearing floricanes that ripen in early June – sooner than most other thornless varieties.

You’ll enjoy large crops of large, oblong, glossy berries. Perfect for eating fresh, baking, and preserves. The thornless nature of these plants make them an excellent choice for home gardens and farms alike.

The Rubus 'Natchez' Thornless Blackberry is a self-pollinating plant that has spreading potential. New canes come up from the roots to increase productivity. It is necessary to prune blackberries annually for the best crop. At any time of the year, you can prune crossed or dead branches to encourage new growth. In late winter, prune back last year’s fruiting canes.

Natchez Blackberry thrives in a variety of conditions. For best results, plant in full sun and well-draining soil. The Natchez thornless variety is drought tolerant and loves the hot heat of the south but is very tolerant to colder weather too!

Come on out and join us at our Fall Edible Garden Plant Sale on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, from 9am to 1pm at Sweet Berry Farms LLC!!!

At this event, we'll feature several edible plants and trees including our new Punica Granatum ‘Sirenevyi’ Pomegranate Tree!

The Punica Granatum ‘Sirenevyi’ Pomegranate Tree is another cold-hardy winner from the renowned research station of Dr. Gregory Levin in Turkmenistan. This extraordinary variety showcases stunning, speckled fruit with vibrant colors, transitioning from pink to red to tan, and dark red, almost purple arils. With its soft seeds and a sweet, almost spicy flavored juice, the Sirenevyi is a delight.

This pomegranate tree blooms in June and July, gracing your garden with vibrant flowers. As fall arrives, the anticipation builds as the fruit ripens to perfection, resulting in a bountiful harvest. Enjoy them fresh, juiced, or in salads and baked goods.

At maturity, the Sirenevyi Pomegranate reaches an impressive height of 10-12 feet, making it an eye-catching focal point in your garden. Its prolific yield is another reason to love this variety, with each tree producing over 20 pounds of luscious pomegranates, mid-to-late season.

Scientifically known as Punica granatum, Sirenevyi requires full to half-day sun exposure and well-drained soil to flourish. Its adaptability allows it to excel in a variety of growing conditions. Moreover, this self-fertile tree starts bearing fruit a mere one to two years after planting, ensuring you won’t have to wait long to indulge in its fresh fruits!

One of the remarkable traits of the Sirenevyi Pomegranate Tree is its cold hardiness, a characteristic shared by many of Dr. Levin’s Russian varieties. Hardy to 5º F or below and thriving in zones 7-10, with success in protected areas of zone 6. This tree defies the odds and proves its resilience.

The Sirenevyi is resistant to most pests and diseases. Pomegranates are generally unaffected by these common garden challenges, giving you peace of mind and less maintenance. It is also self-fertile. With its exceptional beauty, remarkable flavor, and unwavering hardiness, this tree is a must-have for any garden enthusiast.

Grower specifications include:
Site and Soil: Likes full to 1/2 day sun and well-drained soil.
Pollination Requirements: Self-fertile
Hardiness: Hardy to 5º F or below.
Bearing Age: 1-2 years after planting

At this event, we'll feature several edible plants and trees including our new Southern Home Black 'Muscadine Grapes'.

The Southern Home Black 'Muscadine Grapes' is a black interspecific hybrid muscadine and bunch grape that was released by the University of Florida in 1994 as an ornamental, dooryard grape for its vigor and unique leaf shape, resembling that of a maple leaf.

It is also highly tolerant to many fungal diseases as well as Pierce’s disease, allowing for its adaptability to the southern United States. Additionally, it is an everbearing cultivar that produces ripe, uniform fruit from mid-August to October.

Southern Home vines are grown throughout the southeastern United States in USDA cold hardiness zones 7 through 9. They are spur pruned, and they perform well when trained to either a single wire bilateral cordon or a Geneva double curtain with two bilateral cordons. They should be spaced 12 to 20 feet between vines and 10 to 16 feet between rows.

At this event, we'll have several edible plants including the Actinidia Arguta 'Issai' Kiwi.

Kiwi arguta 'Issai' is the only self-fertile hardy kiwi. The vine is less vigorous than other kiwi's which enables it to be grown in gardens with limited space. This kiwi plant has been known to fruit in its first year.

The fruit of 'Issai' kiwi vine is a cousin of the familiar grocery store kiwis. The berries have the same sweet-and-citrus taste, maybe a little sweeter. But they're bite-sized and smooth skinned so you can pop them in your mouth like grapes. There's more good news.

Unlike so many kiwi vines, 'Issai' is self pollinating. It doesn't need a male vine nearby to bear fruit.

Other characteristics include:
- No fuzz on the exterior of the fruit like other Kiwi varieties
- Height range: 4' - 10'
- Exposure: Full to partial sun
- Zones: 6-9
- Other: Cold hardy, vining habit
