Meet Bruce – Large, Loyal, and Loving

Bruce is a 5-year-old, 90-pound Great Pyrenees with a gentle soul and a guardian’s heart. Recently completing heartworm treatment here in Vermont, Bruce is ready for a calm, loving home—ideally with folks who have experience with livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) and appreciate their protective, devoted nature.

Despite his size, Bruce is a mellow guy. He thrives on affection and adores being brushed—just one session a week keeps his fluffy white coat looking great, though he’s always happy to be pampered more often. He’ll nudge your hand, poke his nose under your arm, or gently plop a classic “pyr paw” on you when he wants more love.

Since arriving in February, Bruce has been on exercise restriction, but has enjoyed slow walks, lounging in cool spots, car rides, brushing sessions, and time with his foster family—including the 7- and 10-year-old children, who he’s great with. Starting in August, his activity level can gradually increase. His previous caretakers say he enjoys fetch, hide and seek, learning tricks, and gets along well with other dogs.

Bruce is used to having company for most of the day but he has been trustworthy when left alone and not crated—as long as food is stored out of reach! He cannot live with cats, as his prey drive kicks in around small animals (yet he has been calm and disinterested in chickens for short periods of time while leashed).

Once he feels safe and settled, Bruce is affectionate, goofy, and fiercely loyal. True to his LGD roots, he keeps watch over his home and yard and will sound the alarm if raccoons, skunks, foxes, or groundhogs dare pass through.

He’s cautious around strangers and may become overly protective, so he’ll thrive in a secure, structured environment where clear expectations and a meaningful role will help guide his natural guardian instincts.
