This is Gryffin, the Goldendoodle. Gryffin comes to CVR regularly for acupuncture and chiropractic care. Like many dogs, he loves the snow……..but Gryffin is no ordinary dog. He’s a service dog with a very important job. His owner has orthostatic hypotension and her blood pressure plummets unexpectedly. Gryffin is trained to alert her 3-5 minutes before it drops so that she can safely prepare herself to avoid passing out. He alerts by placing his paw on her thigh. If she misses his cue, he starts barking incessantly at her.
How amazing is that???
We love helping Gryffin so that he can continue to keep his owner safe….and he can continue to make snow angels in CVRs yard ⛄️

Happy National Peanut Butter Day!

Dublin is a sweet 8 year old Pit Bull who suffers from hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia with associated osteoarthritis. She likely has degenerative disc disease as well. She receives acupuncture, laser therapy, and hydrotherapy regularly. However, Dublin’s elbows were treated a few months ago with Synovetin OA, a safe, effective, and long-lasting treatment that targets the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis.

Not only is Dublin enthusiastic about peanut butter, she’s also living her best life through better comfort. She’s playing more, navigating the stairs easier, and getting up on the couch independently again! We see many more peanut butter lick mats in Dublin’s future ❤️

This beautiful soul is Dozer.....and does she have a story for you.

Dozer initially came to see us in August regarding some mobility concerns. When we took some x-rays to learn a little bit more about her anatomy, we discovered a solitary lung mass. This was completely incidental....and unexpected. Dozer's owner, a very brave young woman, had a surgical consult with surgery to remove this mass on September 24th. The mass would prove to be malignant but the lymph nodes were clean....no evidence of spread! Great news!
You can never underestimate the value of x-rays. While this simple diagnostic resulted in a completely unanticipated journey for Dozer, it allowed her owner to act quickly and intervene before things could've been much worse.
Now, with this giant hurdle behind us, we can resume with her acupuncture sessions so that we can support her in so many ways. Dozer, you made our day today! ❤

A patient of CVR for a year and a half, Casey comes in regularly for treatment. We’re so happy to celebrate another year with her!

At 13, she was ‘furever’ young. A year later, 14 never looked so good. Happy Birthday Casey! 🎉👏🏻🎂

The Story of Max

In April of this year Max suffered herniation of intervertebral disks in his neck leaving him completely paralyzed. His prognosis for recovery was guarded. He quickly received surgery at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital and started rehab with us shortly thereafter. Our focus for recovery involved hyperbaric oxygen, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and therapeutic exercise.

Max was quickly showing improvement. He graduated from being transported by wagon to walking with support. In August, Max thought he’d throw in a little complication to his recovery as he started to limp on one of his rear legs. Diagnosis: A torn cranial cruciate ligament or CCL (aka ACL in human terms) 🤦🏻‍♀️. Max went back to surgery for repair of this orthopedic condition. The rehab program for Max changed a bit to include this new problem. We still used the same modalities with the addition of shockwave to facilitate healing of his knee.

We’re so happy to report today that Max is doing really, really well! He is improving every week, can ambulate without assistance, and is happy as a clam! His recovery continues, but he has come so far. We ❤️ you Max!

Some of you may remember Luca, a Maremma Sheepdog we posted about almost 2.5 years ago. Luca was born with Osteochondrodysplasia, a form of skeletal dwarfism. He has visual deficits, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia with significant degenerative changes. While dogs with this condition can have an uncertain future, we are so pleased to report that Luca is now 3 years old and he continues to thrive! His devoted owners bring him in every 2 weeks for therapy without fail.
Beating the odds! 🥂{clink}

It's not hard to see why the Danish-Swedish Farmdog is called the Little Big Dog. This is Scout.....a little dog with a big personality!

Scout was diagnosed with a condition called patella luxation, a common orthopedic condition where the patella (kneecap) moves out of its normal position causing lameness. He recently had surgery and is rehabbing with us. This fun little guy has big sport dog plans....and we're so happy to help him achieve them!

This tiny, little 6.0 pound Toy Fox Terrier named Poppy suffered an acute injury to her spinal cord a month ago that resulted in decreased use of her left rear leg.

With the combination of hyperbaric oxygen (pictured here) and underwater treadmill sessions she has shown rapid improvement and is doing so much better! 🥰

World Pet Obesity Week continues....

So how do you know if your dog (or cat) is overweight? Or ideal? Or underweight? We use a Body Condition Score Chart which is a numerical system that helps assess the body fat and overall condition of an animal.

In a nutshell, a dog (or cat) with an ideal healthy Body Condition Score (BCS) has a well-proportioned body with a visible waist when viewed from above and a slight abdominal tuck. The ribs can be easily felt with a gentle touch but are not prominent. The spine and hip bones are detectable but covered with a moderate layer of fat.

In continued recognition of World Pet Obesity Week, we want to stress the importance of maintaining lean body condition in our pets.

From 1987 to 2001, Purina conducted a 14-year life span study following 48 Labrador Retrievers throughout their lives. Half the dogs were fed 25% less (Lean Fed group) than their full-fed (Control group) counterparts. The results were astounding!

The lean fed group experienced a delayed onset and less severity of arthritis when compared to the control group of dogs. Lean dogs also showed delayed onset of other chronic and age-related diseases. Perhaps the most remarkable finding was that the dogs with lean body condition lived almost 2 years longer than the full-fed group!

So, in summary, when dogs are fed to a lean body condition from puppyhood onward, they live better and longer lives!

Did you know that 63% of all dogs are overweight?

World Pet Obesity Week is October 7th through October 13th. We'd like to bring attention to how excess weight contributes to the development of arthritic disease in our pets. Pets who are overweight or obese experience more mechanical stress on their joints which exacerbates the disease process of arthritis and leads to more pain and discomfort. Maintaining a lean body condition is not only beneficial for our pet's joints, it is important for their general health and longevity.

When Hercules, aptly named, was asked to sit, we should’ve been more specific! Dr. Huppe was a good sport though and didn’t let on that he wasn’t exactly a lap dog 😂

Hercules suffers from several conditions that affect his mobility, but with a combination of acupuncture and underwater treadmill he is already feeling so much better!
Hercules! 👏🏻 Hercules! 👏🏻 Hercules! 👏🏻

We are now offering ArthramidVet, a unique patented 2.5% injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel. It is administered as an intra-articular joint injection under brief sedation.
