These two adorable Rottweilers came in for their wellness appointments and loved their spray cheese distraction during their blood draw for a heartworm test! We often utilize spray cheese, dog treats, and cat gogurts during our appointments either as a distraction during a poke such as vaccinations or blood draws, or simply to make the patient more comfortable in our clinic!

With the warmer weather coming up and more dog owners wanting to take their young dogs out and about to enjoy the nice weather, we’ve been seeing an increase in parvo cases. Parvo is easily spread and can live in the soil for several years. Some steps you as a dog owner can take to prevent parvo is keeping your not fully vaccinated puppy on “house arrest”, essentially keeping the puppy at home, not letting them on the ground outside of the home and prevent interactions with unknown dogs. The best preventative method is vaccinations. Our clinic protocol is starting puppy distemper/parvo vaccines at 6-8 weeks old, boosting the vaccine every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks, then waiting an additional week before allowing them on the ground outside of your home, taking them to highly populated areas, and interacting with unknown dogs. This allows them to build anti-bodies!
