Designed to keep things fresh and engaging, this feeder will be added into Lantsโ€™ regular rotation to keep his mind and senses stimulated. Enrichment like this is vital to his wellbeing, and weโ€™re thrilled to add this fun, novel item to his habitat from time to time!

A HUGE shoutout to Keeper Allyson and Facility Maintenance Keeper Ian for their creativity and hard work bringing this idea to life. ๐Ÿ™Œ And an extra special THANK YOU to our incredibly generous member, Linda, whose donation made this enrichment possible. ๐Ÿ’›

March 29th is the 120th anniversary of the creation of the Wilmington Free Zoo Association and the official start date for the Wilmington (Brandywine) Zoo.

The founding resolution stated:
โ€œWhereas, There is nothing too good for the Metropolis of Delaware;
Whereas, The city is fortunate in the possession of a beautiful park, centrally located:
Whereas, The feeble efforts to establish a โ€œzooโ€ in north Brandywine Park has met with the unqualified approval of our people;
Be it resolved, That the Washington Heights Association pledge a portion of their time, their talents and their patriotism toward establishing a full and free for all zoological garden.โ€

Each week through the year we will be offering a Throwback Thursday post of the zooโ€™s history.

On this Wildlife Wednesday, we're talking falcons. Many are starting their nesting season with some even choosing a spot Downtown Wilm DE.

The Wilmington peregrine falcons are back and have laid their first egg! In a cozy alcove high up on the Brandywine Building, a pair can be observed on camera thanks to the Delaware Ornithological Society.

We encourage you to follow along but want to remind you nature isn't always pretty. These are a carnivorous species primarily feeding on other birds. Recently a mallard duck was lunch.

Visit Wilmington Falcons page where you can receive updates, ask questions, and maybe even get explanations for particular behaviors you see. Two young falcons successfully fledged last year and we hope to see another happy story unfold in 2025.

We hope you're recycling every day and want to highlight Global Recycling Day as a way to call your attention to a handy resource. Recyclopedia.com is a searchable site with over 300 items one may question for disposal. โ™ป

Maybe you already know aluminum foil, empty broth containers, junk mail, and toilet paper tubes can go in curbside bins. But what about wine corks, a bowling ball, or scratch off tickets? Find out on Recyclopedia.com! PS. they CANNOT.

It's always good to check the site once in a while as allowances change. One in particular is the inclusion of paperboard packaging used for refrigerated or frozen foods like those holding stick butter, cream cheese, or frozen pizza. They can now go in your curbside bin!

By the way, don't bother bagging up your recyclables. Those plastic bags will just tangle in the machines and cause problems. Keep items loose in the bin and recycle bags, including those in cereal boxes, at grocery or drug stores.

Something else to remember- items that may not be an option for curbside pickup can still be disposed of better than in the trash. An example is Christmas string lights. If a strand no longer works, take it to a solid waste facility or one of many collection events throughout the state. Why not spend learning what to keep out of landfills that could pollute our environment! ๐ŸŒ

Recycling conserves valuable natural resources and energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps us take responsibility for our waste today, as opposed to leaving a burden for future generations.

March 15th is Buzzard Day!

In America, both turkey and black vultures are often referred to as buzzards. But it's actually a term used for hawks in Europe and Asia! This group of birds hunt live prey. Vultures on the other hand, soar high above in search for carrion (dead animals) instead. Their bare heads are specially adapted to work a carcass and yield less mess.

Here at the zoo, we have yet another species in this scavenger group- Andean condor. They also have a bare head and large wings for soaring.
