Today is Save the Eagles Day! 🦅 Almost 40 years ago, the bald eagle faced the threat of extinction, but due to dedicated conservation efforts across North America, this majestic species is now the National Bird of the U.S. and flourishing in the wild. We hope our Eagles soar high in the playoffs just like the bald eagle. Go Birds! 💚

Look- snow....y egrets! ❄
It's National Bird Day and we'd like to highlight the trio of snowy egrets here at the zoo. Patch, Rook, and Chessie arrived from St. Louis Zoo in April 2021 and can typically be seen together in the flight exhibit. They share the space with two common ravens, a sandhill crane, and a bald eagle. They were named after the following places, Pea Patch Island, rookery (nesting site term), and Chesapeake Bay.
A distinct identifier for the species is yellow feet! Referred to as "golden slippers," their feet contrast black legs. Great egrets, also known as white herons, look like big versions of snowys but have black feet, and are a completely different species.
Keepers say our trio love to show off their fancy plumes (feathers) and really enjoy eating fish like smelt and trout. They're also fed crickets and mealworms for enrichment, usually placed within bunched up paper or special feeding tubes. These egrets like to perch on exhibit structures, so look around thoroughly when you visit. Like snow in DE, they can be hard to find sometimes!

Earlier this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal to list the monarch butterfly as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This is a significant step toward nationwide protection for a well-known insect in peril. 🦋
Fifty-one years ago today the ESA was signed into law, and numerous species' populations have increased as a result. Some have even been removed from the list, like the bald eagle. 🦅
Let's hope the same fate awaits the monarch butterfly!
