Growing veggies is fun, but eating them is even better! 🍅 Sharing recipes is one of our favorite things about growing food in community.
Thanks to generous funding from the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association, we've been able to share printed recipes & samples with our neighbors at the food pantry this year.
Our Youth Crew participants prepared this cucumber salad last month. They liked the sweet cold & tangy cucumbers, so we offered it as a sample recipe at House of Mercy Food Pantry. A few community members suggested adding a few tomatoes 🍅 for more summer fun...yum!!
Thank you so much for funding this educational cooking project!

We’re so excited for this harvest of Green Striped Cushaw Squash!! After struggling with heavy pest pressure the last few years from squash bugs and vine borers, having a good harvest of winter squash is a blessing! This year we experimented with pest-resistant varieties (like this Cushaw) and also utilized row covers to protect the plants before they flowered and produced fruit. Farming is all about persistence and trying new things!

Rise Up Community Farm began in February of 2019 when Global River Church generously gave us permission to use a 1/2 acre of land located behind their buildings.
February 2019- The first work began, clearing and preparing the land. Volunteers came out and helped us begin leveling a giant mound of dirt that was preventing us from planting.
March 2019- A greenhouse was built on the property and several yards of compost helped us prepare our first rows. The first seeds were sown!
April 2019- A tractor trailer load of compost was donated, and with the help of several volunteer groups, we were off to plant our first season of vegetables- beets, carrots, broccoli, collard greens, kale, cucumbers, squash, watermelons, tomatoes, peppers, and more!
May 2019- our first harvests of bok choy, collard greens, kale, turnip greens, and more went to the House of Mercy food pantry, serving families in need in our local community.
