"A herd of manatees has been spotted in the intracoastal waterways between Hampstead and Wrightsville Beach.
They have been spotted feeding by docks and banks where waterway traffic tends to be heavier. Manatees are very difficult to spot above water, so please exercise caution when enjoying your time on the water." ( )
Manatees are also a federally protected species, so any type of attempted or successful interaction with them is illegal. . Do NOT attempt to feed them, give them water or interact with them in any form. Please do not harass them by trying to swim with them, touch them or get close to them.
