My friend gets the credit for being the first one to get Hijack across the dog walk ; she stole him while I was teaching classes - with that little boost of confidence Jack was like "ohhhhhh, I'm not going to actually die, got it!" πŸ˜‚ Now the real work begins ❀️❀️

Dear dog owners...
If you make the decision to send your dog to dog daycare or you use dog parks solely as a way to exercise your dog then you absolutely will need to spend time training your dog to be NEUTRAL around other dogs, LISTENING to you around distractions, and learning how to CHILL.
No excuses for rude dog behavior because your dog attends dog daycare/dog parks.
The biggest behaviors that I see with dogs that go to traditional style dog daycare/dog parks;
πŸ“£UNABLE TO CHILL. Has to be doing something all the time. Whether it be pacing, whining, or getting into mischief.
πŸ“£UNABLE TO BE AROUND OTHER DOGS without wanting to physically interact. Dogs may even pull their owners towards other dogs 🀦
πŸ“£ UNABLE TO FOCUS ON OWNER; everything else is MORE EXCITING than the human that literally is responsible for their well-being.
This happens because there isn't any BALANCE in the play/train/work ratio.
The balance is off because it's just been ONE SIDED;
THE SIDE OF PLAY/INTERACTING with dogs takes center stage while TRAINING/WORKING your dog falls to the wayside, that is until behavior issues arise, behaviors like leash reactivity/ barrier frustration, no recall/ no engagement around other dogs just to name a few.
Now, I'm not saying to stop sending your dog to dog daycare (as long as they actually enjoy it)
But if your dog attends dog daycare/dog parks then you cannot skip the training/work side!
πŸ“£With that said....

πŸ“£The importance of dog training
One of the most important ways to increase freedom for your dog is to take training very seriously.
When approached the right way, training isn't about controlling your dog's behavior but about you teaching your dog to function successfully with you in your home and in human environments in general.
Training techniques create a method of communication between you and your dog, one you both learn and understand together.
With that said....

Remember the goal of training isn't to create a robot dog who rigidly follows commands. Training provides both dogs & their humans with a large toolbox of skills, understandings, and communication techniques that show them to calmly navigate their surroundings with independence, confidence, and flexibility.

Tuesday Training Tips - What Motivates Our Dogs?
Part 1 - Internal vs External Factors

External and Internal factors are what directly and indirectly determine how our dogs are motivated, and how motivated our dogs are.

Internal factors are the Nature of your dog, and are elements that are generally outside of our control as dog owners to change or influence at any given time.

Primary Internal Factors would be the breed/lineage of our dogs, their intelligence level, and their temperament. Secondary Internal Factors are more variable and change with time and environment or circumstances, such as our dogs mood, their current health level, and energy levels.

External Factors are the elements that we do have control over, and the ways in which we Nurture our dogs behaviours.

Primary External Factors would be the things that we proactively do to motivate our dogs. Treats, toys, pets, verbal praise, generally these are tangible things we can provide or remove from our dogs to directly motivate or influence their behavior at a given time.

Secondary External Factors are the things we are reactively doing or reacting to within the environment that indirectly motives or influences our dogs behaviour. This can be our own subconscious energy, stress, and anxiety levels (that our dogs inevitably pick up on), or environmental/circumstantial factors we are forced to react to like thunderstorms/fireworks. In general we have little to no control over Secondary External Factors occurring, just in how we react to them which in turn affects how our dogs react to us.

Understanding how our dogs are motivated is the first step to efficient and effective training practices. Once you know what makes your dogs want to work, it becomes much less work for you!

Y'all.... Keep those hands neutral! Otherwise your hand becomes the MARKER, instead of "YES"
MARK (verbally, "Yes")
THEN (physically) reach into that treat pouch.
MARK "YES" 1ST
REACH FOR THE TREAT 2ND
NOT AT THE SAME TIME!
You don't want to muddy the water any further!
