We are almost finished with the superficial muscles.

Gluteus Superficialis (shaded red): Extends the hip, retracts the limb and supports outward rotation. Overwork and repetitive motion are the main causes of soreness. Compensation from lameness in lower limbs can also cause pain in the muscle.
Veterinary exam and massage are a great course of action.

Biceps Femoris (shaded blue): Extends the hip, hock, and stifle. Stabilizes the pelvis.
Injury and soreness can occur from excessive use during competition, repetitive motion which can cause mini tears in the muscles tendon.
Massage is effective for soreness, veterinarian care is required for injury.

Adequate rest and massage schedule are effective in preventing injury to both these muscles especially if your horse is in a rigorous work routine.

Muscle of the day: Tensor fasciae latae (area shaded in blue) its function is to stabilise and move the stifle and hip. This muscle is complex in nature because of its multiple attachment points, because of this there are several factors that can cause pain.
The most common are overuse, muscle imbalance and nerve impingement.

Massage and rest are the best course of action to heal this muscle.

Re**us Abdominis: this large muscle originates in the chest, runs the length of the midline and attaches to the femur and p***s. Functions of this muscle are, flexing the spine, regulating breathing and when strong aid in efficient athletic movements.

It is affected by poor carriage while under saddle or a poorly fitted chinch. Belly lifts are a good exercise to do form the ground. Place fingers at the girth, appy moderate pressure and run the length of the muscle a few times.

Obliques (blue line): Muscle between the ribs and re**us abdominis(abs). Protects organs, allows trunk to twist to the opposite side of h to r contracting muscle. This is an important muscle for right turns and lateral movement. Maintaining strength in these muscles greatly improves your horse’s athletic ability. Causes for soreness are direct blow and over work. Releasing the fascia over this muscle greatly improves its recovery.

Muscle talk: Intercostals- these are the muscle that run between the ribs and aid in breathing. Horses are handed like people so one side can become dominant and make flexion difficult or cause a horse to favour a lead. Releasing these muscles can greatly improve a horses function and performance.

I am accepting clients for equine massage and micro current therapy. New client horses I require one massage first to get my hands on them before using microcurrent therapy. Horses in heavy work should at minimum have bodywork once a month, microcurrent for day of treatment as sessions are 15-30 minutes and healing will continue after session concludes. Message me for dates and availability.

Muscle 13) Pectoralis Ascendens. One of the largest muscles on the horse, they are a butterfly shape, one of the few muscles that come into direct contact with the cinch.

The function of this muscle is to suspend the trunk between the thoracic limbs, forelimb retraction and stabilize the glenouumeral joint (shoulder joint)

Soreness in this area is caused by improper saddle fit and placement. And an over tightened cinch.

Microcurrent therapy, what is it? A frequency specific technique for treating pain using low level electric current. Tissue continues to heal after treatment. Sessions range from 15-30 minutes, horses can be ridden after just like a massage. Exercise is encouraged to aid the body in ridding itself of toxins.

I offer microcurrent therapy in addition to massage or as day of treatment at an event.
