Re**us Abdominis: this large muscle originates in the chest, runs the length of the midline and attaches to the femur and p***s. Functions of this muscle are, flexing the spine, regulating breathing and when strong aid in efficient athletic movements.

It is affected by poor carriage while under saddle or a poorly fitted chinch. Belly lifts are a good exercise to do form the ground. Place fingers at the girth, appy moderate pressure and run the length of the muscle a few times.

Obliques (blue line): Muscle between the ribs and re**us abdominis(abs). Protects organs, allows trunk to twist to the opposite side of h to r contracting muscle. This is an important muscle for right turns and lateral movement. Maintaining strength in these muscles greatly improves your horse’s athletic ability. Causes for soreness are direct blow and over work. Releasing the fascia over this muscle greatly improves its recovery.

Muscle talk: Intercostals- these are the muscle that run between the ribs and aid in breathing. Horses are handed like people so one side can become dominant and make flexion difficult or cause a horse to favour a lead. Releasing these muscles can greatly improve a horses function and performance.

I am accepting clients for equine massage and micro current therapy. New client horses I require one massage first to get my hands on them before using microcurrent therapy. Horses in heavy work should at minimum have bodywork once a month, microcurrent for day of treatment as sessions are 15-30 minutes and healing will continue after session concludes. Message me for dates and availability.

Muscle 13) Pectoralis Ascendens. One of the largest muscles on the horse, they are a butterfly shape, one of the few muscles that come into direct contact with the cinch.

The function of this muscle is to suspend the trunk between the thoracic limbs, forelimb retraction and stabilize the glenouumeral joint (shoulder joint)

Soreness in this area is caused by improper saddle fit and placement. And an over tightened cinch.

Microcurrent therapy, what is it? A frequency specific technique for treating pain using low level electric current. Tissue continues to heal after treatment. Sessions range from 15-30 minutes, horses can be ridden after just like a massage. Exercise is encouraged to aid the body in ridding itself of toxins.

I offer microcurrent therapy in addition to massage or as day of treatment at an event.

Muscle #6
Latissimus Dorsi: superficial muscle that attaches to both the supraspinous ligament and the thoracolumar fascia. As well as inserts at the bottom of the humerus.

It’s function is to retract the forelimb thus providing impulsion.

Causes of pain: saddle fit, impact injury, overwork, poor conditioning. Signs are irritation ( skin twitch, pinning ears) during grooming, acting cinchy.

Massage will relieve pain and tightness.

Reminder: Horses are great at hiding pain and sometimes it takes multiple massages to relieve the muscles. You’re horses will thank you.

Food for thought: don’t forget about your horse’s diet when it comes to exercise and muscle recovery. They need vitamins and minerals to maintain muscle and nervous system communication. Fats for muscle endurance/recovery and protein to build muscle. Your horses diet could be impeding their recovery.

Have a great day everyone 😊

Good morning, I’ve decided to accept a limited number of outside horses for training. Tune ups, pattern on barrels, ranch versatility patterns, furthering a young horse’s training. No c**t starting though. Message me if interested.

#5 Deltoid: flexes the shoulder and supports adduction (movement of the limb)
This muscle attaches to and supports the infraspinatus. Overwork and compensation are typically the cause of soreness for this muscle.

Muscle #3 Trapezius Cervicis
Helps raise the neck when forelimbs are bearing weight. It moves, stabilises, and elevates the top of the scapula while the horse is in motion.
This muscle is greatly affected by saddle fit. Pinching will cause a shortened stride and eventually soreness.

Muscle #2 (green)
Brachiocephalic muscle runs from the poll to the humerus. It’s function is to flex the cervical vertebrae (neck down, head back) and create lateral flexion.

This muscle overworks itself if there’s any forelimb lameness, it’s main cause of tension is poor posture meaning your horse has a weak top line and goes around upside down. In almost every massage I do this muscle gets treated.

Splenius: this muscles function is to extend and elevate the neck.
This muscle can become sore if your horse pulls back or carries tension in their neck, similar to people.
I treat with direct pressure to help release the muscle.
Excuse the drawing, I’m no artist 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good morning, I am certified with Equissage California since 2013. Equissage is a hands on massage sequence. I personally love it because it allows me to feel the horse and know how much pressure to use or not use. Sometimes the first massage is only light to moderate pressure until the horse realises he/she feels better. I love seeing the difference in horses and being able to help them feel better.
