With all the hot days ahead do your best to keep your dog from overheating.
Keep a close eye on your dog on hotter days

Temperatures in the 70s and above pose health risks and dangers for your dog

Age, breed, and health status may have an individual impact on your dog's ability to cool down on a hot day

Staying home with an ice treat or kiddie pool may be the best option when temperatures get too hot outside

Schedule walks and playtime for cooler mornings or evenings. Avoid hot pavement, concrete, or sand that can burn paw pads.

It takes eighteen muscles to move a dogโ€™s ear. This specificity of motion helps the dog pinpoint the origins of sounds much faster than a human can. A dog can locate the source of a sound in 1/600 of a second and can hear sounds four times farther away than a human can.

Dental disease causes significant, chronic pain in pets. When dental disease is discovered later, after years of tartar, plaque, and bacteria buildup have caused infection, inflammation, and diseased teeth, your pet has already experienced significant, chronic, life-changing pain. But animals are experts at hiding signs of pain, so the pain may go unnoticed by you. Instead, you may see that your pet is increasingly irritable and lethargic and has a decreased appetiteโ€”changes you may attribute to your petโ€™s advancing age or other lifestyle factors. But after a proper and thorough dental procedure, many pet owners report the emergence of โ€œa whole new petโ€โ€”one who is happier and more active.

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’šFun Facts Friday๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ

Cats are lactose intolerant. Like most mammals, cats lose the ability to digest dairy after infancy. Feeding milk to a cat can encourage stomach upset and diarrhea so even though you think a cat would like a nice bowl of milk, this would be a bad idea.

Do you know the difference between sedation and general anesthesia? Sedation refers to a state where the patient is calm and relaxed and may or may not be conscious. Sedation is typically used for shorter (up to 30 minutes), less-invasive veterinary procedures such as diagnostic imaging, joint injections, suture removal, and wound management. Injectable sedation is short-acting, and with most sedatives, a reversal agent can be given once the procedure is complete. This agent reverses the effects of the sedative on the central nervous system and can provide quick recovery within 15-20 minutes after injection.

On the other hand, anesthesia produces a loss of consciousness. General anesthesia is typically used for longer, more invasive procedures such as surgery or dental cleanings. When a pet is under general anesthesia, they are connected to an anesthetic machine, and a tube is placed through their mouth into the trachea to allow oxygen and the inhalant anesthetic to be dispersed as the patient breathes.

Just like with snowflakes and human fingerprints, each dog has his or her own specific nose print.
Speaking of dog noses, did you know that theyโ€™re wet to help them retain scent chemicals? This is part of the reason why dogs are such good sniffers. Wet noses also help dogs to regulate their body temperatures.
