“When I first opened Apollo Vet in Wimberley, I had no intention of marketing it as an open concept clinic. In fact, I didn’t know that was even a category at the time. I just knew how it felt to be a vet on the other side of the treatment door from a client.
And I didn’t like it.
I didn’t like how the clients felt not knowing what was going on with their pets.
I didn’t like how the doctors and nurses were working so hard but so unnoticed.
I didn’t like the mistrust I felt brewing in regards to the community’s perception of vets.
So we did something..not radical at all. We just included the clients in the care.
We have nothing to hide and we perform amazing work that saves lives.
I started letting the clients come look at the cytology under the microscope. We let the clients stand table side when scanning their pet with the ultrasound. We didn’t separate them during a triage which can often lead to the pet’s last moments. We let them in radiology to hear the discussion of how we are interpreting their pet’s X-rays. And yes they are allowed to watch procedures on their pets.
What happened was amazing and inspiring. I developed some of the deepest relationship with clients that I had experienced in my career. And the clients were SO appreciative and supportive of our team. It has been truly a win win for everyone involved. It really goes back to the Apollo Mission of enhancing and enriching every life that walks through our doors.
Our building is designed to physically represent our philosophy. And remind us of what this unique experience can do for our pets and their parents.
Today we had a client who stayed out in her car due to feeling under the weather make a comment to us that she got to watch how hard we work and how we all work together, that is was truly amazing to see. It’s moments like this that reaffirm we are doing what’s right for us and our clients despite all the reasons I hear in how you can’t have an open concept ve
