The prefrontal cortex of adolescent dogs is still developing and things like impulse control can be hard for them. One way you might see this lack of impulse control is a young dog constantly lunge at things on the ground just out of curiosity. So part of the training needs to focus on helping them learn how to handle impulse control in small manageable bites. Going step-by-step helps them reach higher levels of control.

Kody Earns Olympic Gold
Okay, Kody is an over-achiever! We said we would try new tempting food next week but, here we are at the end of the week and he's impressing us! Today's food, hamburger, chicken nuggets and french fries! We also worked on staying in down while someone eats and holds food a little lower than the table.
Kody wins an Olympic Gold Metal for this one!
Table surfing no more! Part 1
Kody is learning not to table surf! He's a big dog and the table is right at nose height and he has a history of helping himself! It's still a work in progress, but no need to punish him for surfing, when we can make a positive association with laying next to the table. Here, he is free to make a choice and he chooses the right one.
This week the food on the table is peanut butter, treats, and can cheese. What shall we use for food next week?

Even as professional trainers, we understand what it means to own a "dog reactive" dog or even a very friendly dog.
Here you can see Connie and Anna working with their own dogs. One dog is friendly and just wants to say hello. The other dog is very reactive toward other dogs.
You can also see the how reinforcers are faded out. One dog is earlier in her training and is reinforced more often. The "dog reactive" dog, is much further in her training and does not need frequent reinforcers.
If you have a dog reactive dog, there is hope. It may look different for each dog, but you can reach a level of calmness in the presence of their triggers.

🐾 Tea is our resident playtime expert with Big Red - she's got the skills and the toys to prove it! Did you know you can use toys as a reward instead of treats? Look at us playing with Tea, then stopping for a second to ask her to sit, then lay down, and we rewarded with more play! 🐾
🐾 Gus is also part of the big red fan club. He is one of the few dogs who truly appreciates the rope handle of Big Red. But do not worry, he also like the red fluffy portion! He was not very excited about "come" before he met big red, today he expects Big Red's presence if someone calls him over in our facility. 😄🐾
