Angels At Play
It's in the upper 70s today so to celebrate three of our rescued angels are having a pool party! 🎉🍹
All three suffer from a permanent disability called angel wing. This is most commonly caused by being fed high carbohydrate food like bread or cooked rice. Unfortunately this causes the bones in the wings to have rapid uncontrolled growth, resulting in permanent deformity that prevents them from being able to fly. Domesticated geese and ducks can't fly regardless however for wildlife like birds and water fowl this condition is a death sentence. They can no longer escape predators nor can they fly off to find food or warmth during fall and winter. Please never feed processed human food to birds. If you must feed wild birds, give them thawed frozen peas.

Happy Windy Wednesday from Elvis!

Rescued from cruelty in Montgomery county Maryland where he was found starving and lacking access to water, that got us All Shook Up! Now thankfully he knows Love Me Tender.

Did you know just like every person has a unique voice, so does every rooster? Just like you recognize your friends and family on the phone without needing proof thanks to their tone, accent and speech pattern; the same is true for a rooster's crow, each one is different. Even though we have many rescued roosters here at PFS, just by hearing we know Steve's crow from any others!

Our volunteer team is amazing! They work hard to provide care for the rescued animals and the ones working today in the photos are also working hard cleaning up from yesterday's wind that got hay and straw everywhere. Our mission of saving the lives of animals from cruelty would not be possible without volunteers! Join the team!

Duckie the special needs duck just finished breakfast. Before rescue she was brutally attacked by a dog on a farm and left to die by the farmer. Her neck, wings and legs were broken. Thanks to a caring employee, she's safe and has enjoyed life at the sanctuary, she even has her own private pool and passed area to sunbathe since she cannot walk, stand or preen. PFS likes to focus on those with physical special needs, emotional trauma or less than a cuddly personality. Unfortunately these individuals frequently get passed over in the rescue world because of the time and cost of care or they may not gain as much financial support as an animal with a friendly, cuddly personality. Their lives matter too so we will focus as much as we can on saving the lives of these amazing, special individuals like Duckie!

Several times every year we find balloons and plastic bags on the sanctuary property blown on the wind. In addition to the issue of littering and introducing plastic into the environment, the rescued animals and wildlife might eat them as they don't have experience with this items to know they are not food. Balloons and bags can cause a blockage in the digestive system of even large cattle or equine, requiring risky surgery to save their life. This plastic bag was just found caught on the pig fencing. A week ago we watched a balloon sail in the wind and land on the ground. If you use these items, please do everything you can to prevent them from ending up in the environment, the health and well-being of all the amazing rescued animals here deserve to not face this risk.
