Shana enjoying the sunrise from up on the goat playground top platform. To best the heat during summer, many of the animals change to being active in the evening and early morning, spending the day when it's hot resting in shade.

Happy Rescue-versary Toby & RIP

Ten years ago this boy arrived at the sanctuary as a little grey fuzzball near death. Saved from Virginia Beach where some people had him " so they wouldn't have to mow their lawn", he suffered a compound leg fracture hours after being born June 9th 2015 and was denied any medical treatment, even a tube of antibiotic ointment was beyond the care they were willing to provide. By the time he arrived a few days later, he was dying from toxicity and shock, the front leg was necrotic. After lots of emergency medical care and a few weeks of regaining strength, Toby went to Virginia Tech where the leg was surgically amputated at the shoulder and he received a blood transfusion to save his life. Toby scampered around the pygmy goat yard with friends ever since until his passing Feb 2023. He enjoyed going to events and schools to teach others about animal cruelty and exploitation. Toby quickly became the face and mascot of PFS and remains so today. He was guaranteed to steal your heart as adoptive family members like Evelyn, Roger and Anne and many friends who had come to the Richmond Vegfest each year to see him will confirm. He loved bananas and his daddy, and thinks other goats were weird with an "extra" leg. He became very ill Jan 2023 and was once again rushed down to the hospital at Virginia Tech where after several weeks of treatment, he crossed the rainbow bridge in my arms. My special boy Toby, happy anniversary and thank you for enriching my life for the time you were here. I miss you so much, you truly rescued me right back and a little piece of my heart will never heal from when we had to say goodbye at the VTech hospital February 2023.
