🐶 First Pack Walk of the Year! 🐾 What a paw-some start to the year! We kicked off our first community pack walk at the beautiful Johnny's Garden in Winchester, followed by a special team training session. It was incredible to see our amazing shelter dogs, many of whom started with zero leash manners or basic obedience, thriving alongside our dedicated volunteers and staff. Here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe and comfortable during the chilly months: 1. Know the Limits: * Breed Matters: Short-haired breeds, puppies, senior pets, and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to the cold. * Temperature Check: Monitor the temperature regularly. If it's below freezing, consider limiting outdoor time. 2. Provide Proper Shelter: * Insulated Housing: Ensure your pet has access to a well-insulated shelter that is raised off the ground and protected from wind and snow. * Warm Bedding: Provide plenty of clean, dry bedding like blankets, straw, or pet-specific beds. 3. Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: * Shivering: Persistent shivering is a major sign of cold stress. * Whining or Crying: These can indicate discomfort and a need for warmth. * Lethargy: A decrease in energy levels and a reluctance to move around. * Redness or Swelling of Paw Pads: Cold can cause paw pad irritation. 4. Winter Walk Essentials: * Shorten Walks: Keep walks brief and avoid prolonged exposure to icy surfaces. * Paw Protection: Consider booties to protect paws from ice, snow, and chemicals. * Wipe Down Paws: After walks, wipe down paws with a warm, damp cloth to remove salt, ice, and chemicals. 5.
