It's hard to leave your pets at home when you have errands to run, but being separated could cause your pet to become overly anxious. It's important to be aware of separation anxiety to help your pet overcome it.

July is National Pet Hydration Month. Especially during this heat wave, make sure your pet is staying cool and hydrated! Limit exercise when it's hot- only take your pet out during morning/evening hours when it has cooled down. Especially for our lovely short nosed pets who can't tolerate heat as well. Watch closely for sings of heat stroke- heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue. Stay cool everyone! :)

These pictures show why dental X-Rays are so important! On the photo of the teeth on the left, they look healthy and normal. The X-Ray on the right shows very decayed teeth. Bones and teeth are supposed to show up white on X-Rays, but you can see there are a lot of areas that are grey/black. This is why dental radiography is part of a complete dental evaluation and cleaning πŸ™‚

We pride ourselves in being a Cat Friendly Practice! The vet is especially stressful for kitties, and we have multiple measures in place to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Examples include a special cat specific exam room/waiting area, a staff trained in gentle handling, and a spray and diffuser called Feliway. Shown in the picture, this is a pheromone proven to minimize stress in cats. We love our kitties here at VCA Windsor.πŸ’žπŸ˜Ί

It is the start of Foxtail season! Our new doctor, Dr. De La Hoz removed her first foxtail out of a patient's ear today. She is from the East Coast, where foxtails aren't a problem. In California, between late spring and early summer, foxtails are a huge concern. They have sharp ends that can get into many different locations on your pet- ears, eyes, in between the toes, nose, etc. and cause serious discomfort and injury. Be extra cautious when you take your pet outside!

Billie came in a while ago for wheezing. The "before" X-Ray and a culture determined that Billie had a bacterial infection in her lungs. The lungs are supposed to be black, and in the first X-Ray, on the right side of her lungs, you can see that there is a lot of white, indicating that the lungs are not normal. After a month long course of antibiotics, the "after" X-Ray shows that the infection has been cleared, and the lungs are back to normal. We are so happy that we could help Billie feel better. Medicine is pretty cool!

We would like to welcome our wonderful new vet, Dr. Katherine De La Hoz!
She has been working with us for a couple weeks now, and has been an absolutely incredible asset to our team. She earned her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where she experienced the first-hand importance of preventative medicine. Dr. De La Hoz is a fear-free certified practitioner, and strongly believes that early intervention, expert monitoring, and regular check ups are key to help our furry family members live long and healthy lives.

Rhett is a very beloved patient of ours here at our hospital. He comes in every so often for acupuncture which helps him a lot in his older age. Acupuncture is a very special treatment that can really increase the quality of life for older dogs and cats, increasing their energy and mobility. Plus, they get treated with "baby food popsicles" which most of our patients love. Whenever Rhett comes in, he does not want to leave because he loves the attention and treats so much. Call us for a consult if you are interested in acupuncture for your senior pet! πŸ™‚πŸ’™
