Thinking of offering a CGC and CGCA evaluation day on Saturday, July 6 if there is enough interest. Cost would be $10 per test. Please comment below if you are interested and I will make it official.

This is a hard one for many. We think by petting a dog, it gets us to like us. For some yes, for many it makes it worse and we are stressing them out more.

In my boarding facility, I have some boarders that want me to pet on and love them. I have many however, they don’t want me to pet them. They want me to take care of their basic needs (food, water and exercise) but that’s the extent of our interaction. I have some that will allow me to pet on them outside, but don’t want me to touch them inside.

With only four pens, I am able to give my boarders what they need/want. I get a chance to know my boarders and know what they want from me. Could I do more business and make more money if I added more pens and took on more boarders? Yes. Do I want to add more pens and take on more business? Absolutely not. I’m perfectly happy with the size of facility I have and the care I can give each dog I have. I do hate telling people no when I’m full, but I can only do what I feel is best for the dogs in my care.

Another great night in our performance class. Everyone is loving nosework, so we will do a bit of it each night. We also introduced some agility tonight. It was a hit as well!

The purpose of this class is to see what your dogs like to do! Like one person commented, “I really don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on “X” class if my dog doesn’t enjoy it.” This is giving the participants a chance to see where their dogs interests are so they can make an informed decision on what to pursue.

Last night our “performance” class gave me a taste of how much fun we are going to have! This was them warming up before we introduced nosework. These handlers are dedicated and want to do great things! And their dogs are fabulous!!!

“Friendly” dogs, like humans, keep their distance and acknowledge from a far. Keep your dog friendly and don’t let it be rude!

"FRIENDLY DOGS"

I wanted to write a bit about so-called "friendly" dogs.

I have been in dogs over 35 years as an adult and have seen a lot of so-called "friendly" dogs. You know the type, the ones dragging their owners up to anyone and everything, while the owner shouts "he just wants to say hi!"

The problem is, most of these "friendly" dogs are in fact rude, have no social skills and rarely listen to their owners while distracted or highly aroused. Their owners lack basic understand of dog behavior and body language. So these dogs terrorize innocent dogs and their owners, often resulting in altercations and possibly fear aggression or reactive behavior in the victim dogs. Leashed dogs can't get away so may be pushed past their limit to NOT react. Dogs who think they HAVE to meet all dogs can be very frustrated when not allowed to, and frustration is the number one cause of aggression in dogs.

Here is the thing. Most dogs don't enjoy meeting other dogs. Read that again. MOST DOGS DON'T ENJOY MEETING OTHER DOGS. Think of it like this, when you are out in public, do YOU rush up to every human you see, get into their personal space and touch them inappropriately, just because you are friendly and want to say "hi"? Wouldn't that be SO inappropriate in our human society, and possibly have a negative outcome?

I have a little analogy I make when counseling my puppy buyers on this topic. Picture yourself shopping for groceries at the store. There will be people you walk past in the aisles without even making eye contact. Maybe you will make eye contact with a few, smile and nod and move on. Maybe you will run into someone you know and will stop to chat for a few minutes. Then when you get to the check out lane, you may have a quick conversation with the cashier. Those are all different levels of social interaction and all are considered socially acceptable in our human society. Yet people often insist their dogs meet and have more physical interactions with EVERY dog they see. It is uncomfortable for most dogs, and even worse when they are on leash. It sets dogs up to fail, to react, to lash out after more subtle body language cues are ignored, and it makes the dog lose trust in you to keep him safe and honor his feelings. If a puppy is involved he learns very inappropriate behaviors at an early age.

Instead of thinking your dog has to meet every other dog he sees, instead teach him to be comfortable seeing other dogs but not meeting, and not reacting. If you meet a dog you already know and with whom your dog has a friendly relationship with, that's different. But leave strange dogs alone. That will go a long way to preventing leash reactivity and aggression! And don't be afraid to nicely but firmly tell others not to let their leashed or worse yet, unleashed dog, approach your leashed dog. Your dog will be more comfortable with you, knowing you have his back. Teach him a "watch me" cue using food to reward him turning his gaze to your face, and practicing a lot at home first. It is a VERY useful thing to have a dog who is well conditioned to pay attention to you before you face distractions. And most of all, change the thinking that dogs have to "love everyone", "be good with all dogs" because neither of those is realistic!

Your dog can have a few friends who are compatible with him, and that will more than meet his social needs. But these are not dogs he meets randomly on the street.

We as owners really need to understand dogs, read their body language and honor them, not try to see them or make them into human "fur kids", since that is not possible anyway.

June Classes-enrolling now!

Starting on Monday, June 3 and running through Monday, July 8, we will be offering two classes.

6:00-7:00 pm Puppy/Pet Manners
This class will focus on puppies and dogs who need the basics. We will introduce sit, down, stay, focus, leave it, recall, and loose leash walking. Even if your dog has these skills, practicing them in an environment with other dogs and people as a distraction is always good! If puppies are under the age of 12 months, and their owner desires, we will also cover the necessary items for an AKC STAR Puppy class.

Participants in this class must be fully vaccinated, including rabies. Class is limited to 8 dogs and will be $125.

7:15-8:30 pm Performance
This class will be a dabble into different performance events. We will spend time doing rally, obedience, tricks, agility equipment, nosework, etc. At our first class, we will discuss and decide as a group what needs to be covered. This class is designed for dogs/older puppies who have the basics and are ready to further their skills in the world of performance events. Not sure what you and your dog would like or be good at? This class is for you to do some trial and error!

Participants in this class must be fully vaccinated, including rabies, and be non reactive with other dogs. Class will be limited to 10 dogs (one handler could work two dogs if desired) and will be $125 per dog (second dog with same handler is only $100).

To enroll in either class, you must send me a direct message. Commenting on this post will NOT get you signed up. Once I receive your message, I will reply with further instructions on how to secure your spot with payment.

If you have questions about either class, just ask!

Edit-Everything has been taken. Thank you for doing what I asked and not scattering.

My garage sale is over! These boxes are sitting outside my building and are free for that taking. All I ask is that you either take the entire box, or just the items you want but leave the box so that items are not scattered around. I will be donating on Monday, so you can help me out by making it so I don’t have to load up and haul it off.

Thanks!

Who cares about the manners of some of these dogs! I allow my dogs “20 seconds of stupidity” as I call it, where they can be happy I’m home and they don’t have to have manners. I just want to feel the love!

We have to remember, we have a world outside our home, but to our dogs…we are their world!

Our next round of classes will start in June. The Sedalia Kennel Club had to delay the start of their classes and will not be finished until May 20. I’m looking at possible dates and times, trying to work around a trip, and should know after this weekend.

I’m thinking of offering two classes on Monday evenings. I’m going to choose between 1) AKC STAR puppy class, 2) basic pet manners, and 3) a performance based class where we explore a different sport each night (rally, obedience, agility, nosework, tricks, etc).

Each class would be $125, hour long session, meet for six weeks, and will be limited to around 8 participants. Comment below what you would be interested in!

Just a reminder about the multi family garage sale happening at Mutts, Manners and More this Friday and Saturday April 26-27 (901 N Main, Windsor). Katie and my sister Gail are both coming in Friday morning with stuff, so we will not open until noon on Friday. This sale is inside my climate controlled building!!!

We will have things such as clothes, housewares, teacher stuff, wedding decor, holiday decor, bags, craft supplies including fabric, some dog and cat items, and lots of random misc! If I can convince Kevin to go through his closet, there might be some men’s clothes.

Depending on how much sells, I’m probably going to open back up again next weekend as well during the Windsor Community Yard Sales. If I do that, I have a friend who might bring some more stuff including furniture.

As I start setting things out tonight and tomorrow, I will start adding pictures to this post. None of my stuff will be going back home, so please come buy it so I don’t have as much to haul away!

Right now the tables are bare, but they won’t be for long!
