BCHS (501) consists of a very small group of volunteers taking care of the abandoned animals of Bertie county! Volunteers & donations allow us to maintain our own NO-KILL shelter for cats. We also work with Bertie County Animal Control and the dogs at their canine (KILL) Shelter. If you see a dog that interests you -- PLEASE CALL OR POST IMMEDIATELY. Our county shelter is very small (10 runs) and

we can influence a dog's short-term survival if there is even a CHANCE of adoption or rescue! Our Animal Control Officer is very helpful when he can be. MAILING ADDRESS:

WE ARE MOVING THE DOGS AT THE OUTDOOR SHELTER TO BOARDING for 4 days
to get them out of the dangerous heat.
That’s the only number of days we have money being given to us for. It will help them immensely for 4 days.
(we appreciate the money for the four days!)

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND they will have to return to the outdoor shelter after 4 days and the temperatures will not be any cooler after 4 days!! There will still be temperatures in the 90s‼️

………so if you can donate so they can stay in Boarding longer it would be greatly appreciated! (Then we can try to find space at Boarding for a longer period if possible)

😩We are out of funds
We are now short over $5,000 to pay the current bills !
AND ….. we have many dogs that need vetting, dogs still needing sterilizations,
many dogs that need heartworm treatments, 7 dogs in foster care that we supply all food, medical and supplies for and have 13 dogs in boarding (that’s not including the dogs leaving the shelter and going to Boarding temporarily!)
The monthly boarding bills are now $10,602 and sometimes more. That does not include all our other bills ( food, supplies and medical for all the CATS, for dogs: vet bills, fosters, food for every animal that comes into the shelter, supplies for the shelter, etc)

DANGEROUS TEMPERATURES FOR THE DOGS AT THE

No enclosed building, therefore NO AIR CONDITIONING!
VERY VERY limited ekectrical capacity available so cannot add more fans 😩😩

We lost Rex yesterday💔
Our hearts are broken

His seizures became much worse and the veterinarian felt euthanasia would the kindest thing to do. They tried to control them with medication and it was no longer working. 😢

We would’ve never let him suffer. He deserved a lot more than that. We loved him with all our hearts.

Rex was never adopted but he lived at Paradise Pet Resort for 18 months. The boarding staff, vet staff and veterinarians really loved REX also😘😘
He got extra love and attention and was bonded with the kennel and vet staff.

It breaks our hearts that he did not get to live in a home in his lifetime. He lived outside prior to being surrendered to us.
We take great solace in the fact that as of January 2024 he never had to spend another cold winter or hot summer outside!

We spent over $17,900 just in Boarding alone for him and thousands of dollars for his medical care.
Does that tell you how much we loved him and tried so hard to find him a home? We never gave up hope because he was an extraordinarily friendly and sweet boy.
Guess what? He was worth every single cent.

During those days he received great care and was able to run around freely outside in the play-yard during play time and not living outside on a chain or make shift pen! He was made comfortable in an enclosed building with heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.
When his allergies started acting up the veterinarian took care of him. If the Kennel staff noticed anything off with him, he was taken over to the veterinarian side to see the vet right away.
When he was lonely, the kennel staff gave him love.
So, he DID have a HOME ……. His home was with people that loved and cared for him every single day for 18 months.

A new dog brought into the shelter today and Winnie will fill the shelter up in about an hour (she is on her way)

A dog is being returned to the shelter tomorrow and Animal Control needs empty kennels for dogs in need!
When the dog returns to the shelter tomorrow that will mean there will be only one empty kennel and AC can fill that ONE kennel very quickly 💔💔
(They like to have at least two empty kennels for dogs needing to come into the shelter!)

(Kennel list 2 and 3 are dogs in Boarding (but if you can foster one of them we might can move a shelter dog to Boarding)

Update on current MATCH CHALLENGE for $10,000!

What is a match challenge? For every penny that you donate the donation is doubled because if we can raise $10,000 the sponsor will match and donate all donations up to $10,000!

We have raised $6,543 so far!
⛔️ we still need to raise $3457 to reach the goal

WE CAN DO THIS! We have 13K followers on our page, if everyone set up a recurring $5 a month donation the animals would never go without anything!

We have a huge amount of bills so we really need to hurry and reach this goal!

Our monthly boarding bills alone are $12,000! 😩
We have some of the most remarkable Dogs you have ever met in Boarding and we don’t want to lose them!!

Statistics:
-We have 8 dogs at the shelter and all of them need vetting, food and supplies!
-We have 15 dogs in Boarding and some of them have Heartworms that need to be treated!
-We have 7 dogs in foster care and we provide all medical, food, supplies and Heartworm, flea and tick preventions!

WE HAVE 30 dogs and ALL the CATS at the cat barn to provide for!
No one has ever done a fundraiser for the cats, so what funds are donated to the general fund pay for all of the vetting for the CATs and SUPPLIES.

WE HAVE NO MONEY TO GET THESE DOGS TO THE VET!! 😩

We were told she was 8 years old. She looks MUCH older. She deserves proper medical care.

Dog Adoption fee: $125 (sometimes this amount is different or waived, case by case. All animals are sterilized before adoption. Most of the time, if we have the funds and the time, they are also UTD on all core vaccines and other vetting)

➖NO DOGS ARE ADOPTED TO LIVE OUTSIDE! They must be adopted to become INSIDE beloved family members.

UPDATE 6/19/25
➖ Baylor was seen by the vet. Thank you to everyone that donated for her care. 🙏

Baylor is actually a female so we have decided to call her Taylor.

Taylor is heartworm positive, Ehrlichia positive, has a severe case of Demodex mange, an ear infection and tested positive for whipworms and hookworms .

➖NO WONDER SHE FEELS SO BAD!➖
