⭐️Fun Fact Friday⭐️

The famous Wingate Gate reads, “Faith, Knowledge, Service, 1896.”

This motto was translated from the Roman Values, “Fides, Scientia, Pietas.” The first Gate was given to the school by a graduating class in 1924. It was meant to symbolize the progress of Wingate college as it opened its doors to become a Junior college.

Since then, there has been one other Gate that was built in 1942. The most recent renovation of the Gate occurred in 2012.

Do you have any memories of the gate?

Wingate's new provost brings energy and vision to her new role.

When Dr. Laura Hunt was considering applying for the position of provost at Wingate University, one thing that attracted her was the makeup of Wingate’s student body: high percentages of student-athletes, first-generation collegians and Pell-eligible students.

“I really love that student body,” she says. “I really love feeling like we make such a difference in their lives and we get to help them see their own potential when sometimes they don’t even know what they’re capable of doing.”

⭐️Fun Fact Friday!⭐️ Do you know how the Burris building got its name?

Craven Cullen Burris kept Wingate College alive throughout the years of the Great Depression by his strong faith and pure determination. Burris served as the Wingate College President from 1937 to 1953. He spent much of his life involved with Wingate; first, as a student of Wingate School (1912 to 1914), and then later went on to become a teacher, coach, minister, registrar, Board of Education member, College Dean, and eventually, President of the College. His dedication to the institution shows in the roles he played throughout his years at Wingate.

Burris’ dedication and determination to keep the doors of Wingate open was inspiring to many that passed through Wingate. In the 1960’s one of the leading academic buildings was named in honor of him and his service. The Burris academic building still stands today as one of the main academic buildings on campus.

⭐️ Fun Fact Friday ⭐️

Once Wingate’s first library, the Efird Building now houses the honors college and is recognized as a historic property by the Union County Historic Preservation Commission.

J.B. Efird, a Wingate alum and successful businessman, owned a chain of 50+ department stores across the Carolinas and Virginia. His stores were pioneers in the South, introducing escalators and offering employee pensions and insurance—practices well ahead of their time.

Though replaced by the Ethel K. Smith Library in 1959, the Efird Building remains a cherished piece of Wingate’s history. 💙

🌟 Fun Fact Friday 🌟

Did you know the beautiful Judy Love Talley Fountain on Wingate’s Main Campus has a heartwarming story behind it? 💙

Windell and Judy Talley, proud alumni of Wingate Junior College from the late 1950s, have deep roots in the Wingate community. Owners of Talley Farms—one of the largest farms in North Carolina—the Talleys have generously supported their alma mater over the years.

In 2013, Windell Talley donated the funds to create the fountain in honor of his beloved wife, Judy. This serene spot has since become a favorite for students to relax and recharge. The Talleys have also contributed to the growth of the Hinson Art Museum, further enriching the Wingate experience.
