Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Isai Robledo '05

Congratulations to Dr. Isai Robledo, the first Latino to hold elected office in Montgomery County, N.C. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Wingate, Robledo went on to achieve a master’s in 2014 and a Ph.D. in 2021 from UNC-Greensboro. He now serves as the Dean of Workforce Development and Community Strategies at Randolph Community College.

From Wingate to the World—And Back! 🎶 In the late 1980s, alumnus Tony Griffey came to Wingate on a church music scholarship, never expecting college to be in his future. He went on to win a national singing competition and perform on stages worldwide.

This informative speaker session focuses on Jane Pratt, the first congresswoman from North Carolina and presents a unique opportunity for alumni, students, and staff to engage with the author, Marion Elliott Deerhake. The audience will have the opportunity to explore the congresswoman's contributions and engage in a Q&A session about the author's research, expertise, and writing techniques, all while examining the history of North Carolina.

About the Author:
"Marion Deerhake is an environmental scientist with more than 30 years of experience in research, outreach, and communication. She has co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 90 technical reports and conference papers. Wingate alumni leading the way!

Truett Smith ’86, director of advanced practice in primary care and emerging care at Atrium Health and physician assistant at Edison Square Family Medicine, is the new president-elect of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants. Smith majored in biology at Wingate and will serve a three-year term at the helm of the NCAPA.

Congratulations to Truett Smith on this achievement! 🎉

The University sends condolences to the family of alumnus Ken Yelton, 65, who passed away on February 3, 2025. Ken was a proud 1982 graduate of Wingate University where he majored in Business Administration. He served the university in many ways as an alum including serving on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Visitors, and the Alumni Board. He retired in December of 2024 as Market President of Uwharrie Bank after a 42-year career in banking.
