Hello everyone. This post is a tough one to write. It's been several months, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes. I love sharing the beautiful farm life we enjoy with our family, both 2 and 4 legged. The flip side of breeding dogs and farming, (that's not fun to share) is really hard; heartbreaking...but it's part of our journey too. The time, worry, lost sleep, missed events, the vet $$ the mud, the poo, lol etc. So here we go... forgive the long post... it's therapeutic for me to open up!
In January we lost Sebastian to bloat after a traumatic fight to save him. The veterinary shortage in our area is alarming. There were no emergency hospitals available for over 12 hours. X rays showed there was nothing to be done. He was on heavy pain management all Evening, until he could be humanely let go the next day. My advice is if you have an emergency need, drive to the nearest pet ER, and wait in person.
This was a freak occurrence, we are careful to let dogs rest an hour before and after feeding. We feed good balanced food and break the portions into 2 feedings. In 25 years, we've never had issues, but in deep chested dogs, like Gordons, it is a risk. We loved every moment with our boy, and can't thank his breeders enough for placing him in our care, and for the continued encouragement all the way to his last moments. "Bash" was such a perfect buddy, an awesome family dog, and my first AKC champ, I feel really fortunate to have his daughter Juni, and sister Kayley.
Our big singleton boy, Hoss, went to live with our friends in Woodinville, where he has a new English Setter sister. We thank Jan, and her family for loving our big-brave-beautiful-sweet boy as much as we do! We kept him for 4 months to grow and socialize and be a good citizen...He was ready to take on the world 🌍 and as hard as it was to make that decision, he is thriving!
We welcomed a new boy to the farm from Munroc Farm & Shaker Hill Gordon setters.. "Munroc West Ray Isle at Shaker Hill" was in Ohio. We thank his breeders for the opportunity to add him to our crew! I flew in over a weekend and brought it home at 8 weeks. It took a month to name him, but we chose "Levi" Look for us at shows this summer, and tackling performance events in the future! He is from proven dual type ( show/ hunting lines) and will be a great addition to our program in the next few years.
Our next update will be in a few weeks, and will hopefully be good news. I'll share future litter plans. If you're on a waiting list, I haven't forgotten you. :)
If you made it to the end of this post, thanks for reading. And thanks for following our Uponarock Gordon Setter Journey.
