The Power of Enrichment, dogs and cats both can benefit from Enrichment Activities! What are Enrichment Activities? They are activities, toys, or games that can greatly help with boredom (which can lead to destructive behaviors), provide much needed mental stimulation, are just plain fun for your pet, and can help strengthen the bond between you and your pet. The easiest forms of enrichment can be through puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and activities that encourage your pet to think to get rewarded. Be creative and have fun! If you are not sure if an activity/treat is safe for your furry family, just call the office, we will gladly help!

Did you know there is no longer such a thing as a heartworm or flea and tick "season"? Prevention is the most effective way to protect against Heartworm disease, flea bite dermatitis, tick borne diseases, and home infestations. WAH recommends using prevention year-round to best insure your pets safety. With the current warmer weather, fleas and ticks are awake and seeking a host, don't let it be your pet! WAH offers several preventative options, both in hospital as well as in our online pharmacy (https://winnetkaanimalhospital.covetruspharmacy.com). If you have questions on what is best for your furry family member, just call the office, we will be happy to help!

April is National Heartworm Prevention Month! Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitos via the blood stream and migrates to your pets heart. Fortunately, using monthly prevention is almost 100% effective. Preventatives are recommended year round and are most often a chewable oral tablet. Annual heartworm testing is required to ensure no disease is detected. Newly adopted or rescued dogs should be retested 6 months after the rescue/shelter tested as it takes that long to be detected. Heartworm disease is not limited to dogs. Cats are also at risk and preventatives is encouraged, especially for those cats that like to spend time outside. If you have had a lapse in prevention and need to schedule a heartworm test or need refills, please call the office or order from our online pharmacy (https://winnetkaanimalhospital.covetruspharmacy.com).
