Peaceful Purrsday moments, featuring Porcupine and Otter 🥹

These two reserved, laid back boys came in from the same household and truly cherish their time together. One is rarely seen without the other close by, especially when it comes to sharing their favorite cat beds!

Moments like these have been observed more frequently the longer Porcupine and Otter are in the shelter, leading us to the conclusion that they share a special bond and find great comfort in each other’s company. Because of this bond, we’re hoping an equally special adopter can welcome them both home as a bonded pair ❤️

Porcupine and Otter are each on the shy side, preferring to go slowly with building trust. They may need extra adjustment time before feeling comfortable in a new home, but the love and sweetness they’ll show in return is priceless. And they’ll have each other to lean on in the process!

Should you have room in your life for two tender-hearted fellows, learn more about their personalities and apply to visit Porcupine and Otter on winonahumane.org/adopt!

If 200+ baskets of new items, endless wine & beer tasting selections, a raffle, and the 25th anniversary celebration haven’t drawn you in quite yet, there’s one MORE reason you should attend this year’s An Affair for the Animals fundraiser: there’ll be an instant-win game running called Corks for a Cause!

Thanks to generous businesses and community members, an assortment of gift certificates, tickets, vouchers, and unique prizes will be available for winning. Entry is simple: you pay for a cork, you pull a cork, you win a prize! There are three levels of prizes, so no one walks away empty-handed. And shelter pets win too, because all proceeds from cork pull entries will support their care 😸🐕

An Affair for the Animals tickets ($25) are still available for purchase at HyVee and Midtown Foods. Make this year one to remember and join the animal-centric fun on November 7th at Signatures!

Tips for a less spooky Halloween

As Halloween approaches, pet owners often find themselves navigating a tricky balance between festive fun and ensuring their furry friends feel safe and secure. To create a less spooky experience for your pets, consider a few simple yet effective tips!

- Tire them out! Make sure they have had a long walk or an extensive play session earlier in the day to help expel nervous energy.

- Some dogs love costumes, some don't. If you are thinking of dressing up your dog, make sure there are no loose bits or parts that would impede any movement. Introduce wearing the costume gradually beforehand, and if there is an distress or discomfort, do not use.

- Keep your pets indoors, ideally in a safe space with their favorite items, away from the door. And just in case of an escapee, make sure their tags are up to date!
Minimize doorbell use - you can leave candy outside, meet the trick or treaters on the porch, or even set up your smart doorbell to alert your smart phone or watch with a buzz instead of an audible ring.

- Keep treats out of reach! Store all the Halloween candy and chocolate where your pet can't reach it. (Bonus points if you hide it well enough to keep it safe from family members before Halloween too, ha!)

A happy pet equals a happy Halloween! With these precautions, you can enjoy the spooky season without any frightful surprises for your beloved companion.
