It’s a rare moment when Chickadee sits still, and this was one of those lucky times! Chickadee paused her treasured lap cat, biscuit-making session to pose for the camera, showing off her gorgeous green eyes in the afternoon light 💚 Chickadee will bring her future family so much joy with her playful spirit and affectionate personality.

What’s better than a relaxed, peaceful afternoon walk? A walk alongside gorgeous Ember 🙌

Before her spay earlier this week, Ember enjoyed some one-on-one time with a WAHS volunteer. They had a great walk together and paused to catch the sun rays!

After a bit of healing, Ember will be back in business for visits and ready to hopefully meet her forever people. Get to know more about Ember through her website profile, and fill out an app to set up a visit 🖤

During a semester club meeting, members of the WSU Communication Studies Department Club made fleece braided toys for the dogs at WAHS! Valentine wasted no time in thoroughly testing some out. She gave the toys an A+ rating and is excited for the new enrichment items, which will also be able to go home with dogs during adoptions. Thank you to the Club members for all your hard work making the braids and thinking of WAHS animals!

2/27 Update: the fundraising goal has been reached! We’re so thankful for the community’s outpouring of support, generosity, and healing thoughts for Apollo. He’s doing measurably better each day and is expected to make a full recovery. We’re here to help Apollo and others like him thanks to donors making it possible, and he’ll be able to live a normal life because of it. Keep an eye out for Apollo updates as he progresses! ❤️

*Warning - graphic description of injury below*

Everyone, please meet Apollo. Apollo is a strong, resilient fighter, and he’s one of the most complex urgent cases going on right now. Apollo arrived a week ago in critical condition after being found alongside a road. A veterinary examination revealed severe injuries of a broken jaw, degloved cheek, and exposed bone, consistent with being kicked or thrown from a car. He had been living with these injuries for about a week before being found. It’s a miracle he survived.

What happened to Apollo is horrific and it’s difficult to comprehend the senseless cruelty. Although nothing can make up for his ordeal, we’re putting all energy towards caring for Apollo and making sure he feels loved.

Apollo’s road ahead is a longer one. Because of his broken jaw, he cannot eat by himself for a few weeks and must be tube fed several hours apart from early morning to late night. A small group of staff are closely monitoring Apollo for progress, watching his cheek to ensure proper skin graft healing, and assisting with grooming as needed.

Between the initial surgery, skin graft, feeding tube, medical food, supplies, urgent and checkup appointments, and 12-hour daily care/monitoring, it’s looking like several thousand dollars. It’s an exhaustingly complex situation and can’t be done without support, but he’s worth every dollar and every second of extra time.

These are challenging financial circumstances but if you’re able to spare anything, it’ll be appreciated more than ever. Donations are welcome through this post, Facebook or Instagram page, website (link in comments), PayPal, or mailed via check. Should funds raised exceed those of Apollo’s total care, remaining donations will go to help additional animals.

Thank you for your consideration, and for helping our team make up for the inhumanity previously shown to Apollo. He has so much love to give and he’s shown inspiring determination to persevere.

‼️ Important PSA ‼️

Now that we are experiencing some spring like weather in Minnesota – this is your friendly, public service announcement to clean up your yard from any dog doodoo that you may not have picked up in the freezing temperatures.

As this week warms, we tend to want to open the windows and let the fresh air into our homes, but no one wants to open the windows and smell their neighbor’s dog’s p**p piled up in the yard (or cat for that matter.)

To those of you who take your dog on public property to use the bathroom then not pick up after your dog, this announcement is for you too.

Failing to pick up after your pet may result in an administrative fine or state citation.

Enjoy the weather!

Office hours are temporarily paused 2/26 and likely 2/27 due to urgent care cases requiring all hands on deck. Messages and emails will be monitored and replied to as soon as it’s possible in order of urgency. There’s a lot happening behind-the-scenes as the busy season begins, and care of the animals remains the #1 priority. All understanding and patience is deeply appreciated during this time, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Miss Elsie is back at the shelter, and she’s hoping to catch the eye of potential adopters as quickly as she did the last time! A foster trial ended up not being the right fit for her, so Elsie’s ready to meet some new friends now.

Elsie’s about 3 years old and an active breed; she’d thrive with people who are around frequently and able to give her enough enrichment each day. For more about Elsie’s bio/personality, the types of families she’d fit into, and the online application link, visit winonahumane.org/dogs/elsie.

There’s been lots of shuffling around in Elsie’s young life and she’s more than ready to settle in with forever friends. We’re hoping her ideal people come along so that the next home she joins is the final one 🙌
