WAHS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter organization located in Winona, MN. We do not receive any state or federal funding - so our operations are largely made possible through generous contributions, fundraising, and adoption/surrender fees! We are a small but bustling humane society with a passion for helping every animal that we can! Our facility offers open bay housing for cats,

medical treatment rooms, large & small dog kennels, outdoor runs, and a walking trail for dogs. Our organization operates on an appointment-only basis for adoptions, animal visits, and volunteering opportunities. If you're a good fit for an animal, we'll contact you to set up an appointment! Building Hours (by appointment):

Through her time at WAHS, Janine not only touched her caretakers’ hearts; she became a favorite of so many people along her path, from cat area volunteers to vet office staff who tended to her during her summer hospitalization. And once she was healthy and adoptable, as the weeks went by, everyone was asking themselves the same question: HOW had she not been adopted yet?!

Well, it so happens that the right family needed to come along, and they did just that this month 😌 One week ago, Janine found her happy place in the lap of an adopter who loves her so much already. Janine is living the single pet lifestyle and gets the spotlight all to herself – just how she likes it!

Thank you to Janine’s adopter for giving her the life she’d been waiting for, and extra thank you to his family members for helping connect the two together! They have the best future ahead 🖤

Tomorrow, October 25th, the WAHS team has a BUSY day out and about at two exciting community events — so come say hi! From 9am-12pm we’re tabling at the Winona Kids & Parents Expo, then from 4pm-6pm we’re participating in Fastenal’s first Blue Team Boo Bash trunk-or-treat. There will be fun for all ages at both events, where we’ll be sharing about our organization & animals while getting into the Halloween spirit 🎃👻

October 21st marks National Pets for Veterans Day: a time to recognize the immense benefits that animal companionship can bring to those who’ve served our country, and celebrate programs that connect the two populations together.

On this Pets for Veterans Day, we’re honored to announce that a new program, Winona’s Hometown Heroes Adoption Fund, will soon be implemented at Winona Area Humane Society!

Operating under the same process of our standard application and Best Fit adoption protocol, the Hometown Heroes Adoption Fund will utilize specifically designated donations to provide reduced or waived adoption fees for U.S. military veterans — offsetting possible adoption barriers while changing two lives.

This initiative has long been a goal for our team, and thanks to a generous business donor (announcement coming soon) it’s becoming a reality! The Fund will be established and active beginning on Veterans Day.

For those interested in contributing to the Fund, please contact us at [email protected]. Our goal is to begin accepting Fund donations on a larger scale starting November 11th!

It’s a great honor to give back to Winona’s Hometown Heroes while helping pets find loving forever homes, and we appreciate anyone who can join us in this journey 🇺🇸🐾

Words can’t express how exciting it is to share that earlier this month, sweet Charlie found his place and set off to his new home!

Charlie came back to WAHS earlier in the summer and just like his first go at the shelter, many days passed while he awaited an adopter match. But his whole world changed when a potential adopter came along who was over the moon to meet Charlie 🥹

They hit it off right away at first meeting, and the rest is history. They’re the best of friends and it’s everything his team had hoped for Charlie’s future 🖤 Congratulations to this duo who are so lucky to have found each other at just the right time!

Shoutout to everyone who attended and donated at Winona Feed, Seed & More’s Meet the Makers event last Saturday! In addition to monetary donations, a wide variety of items were gathered that’ll help the shelter care for pets in need. We also sincerely thank Winona Feed, Seed & More for facilitating the donation dropoff opportunity, and for organizing a great event that brought local vendors and community together ☺️👏 They are truly the best!
