Numerous clients have reached out with concerns regarding Equine Herpes Virus -1 (EHV-1) and Equine Herpes Virus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM)

There is an outbreak of EHV-1 including the neurologic form near our area in Wisconsin. Currently, the Wisconsin counties with outbreaks include Clark, Grant, Monroe, Saul, and Vernon.

EHV-1 is a highly contagious and reportable disease. We are recommending our clients use extra precautions before transporting your horses or attending any equine events. Any unnecessary equine transport should be avoided at this time.

Symptoms of EHV-1 include:

- Fever (102-105 F)
- Respiratory Disease (coughing/nasal discharge)
- Abortion
- Urine Dribbling
- Difficulty standing, stumbling
- Recumbency, unable to stand
- Unable to defecate

Vaccination: Many horses are vaccinated against EHV-1, and the vaccine is included in the vaccine protocol that we offer. The EHV-1 (rhinopneumonitis) vaccines available are labeled for protection from the respiratory form of EHV-1 and abortion but do not prevent the neurologic form. There is evidence that the vaccine reduces respiratory shedding of the virus and can aid in mitigating outbreaks.

Recommendations for our clients:

- Ensure your horse is up to date on their routine vaccinations. Please call to schedule your spring wellness appointment to get your horses vaccinated.

- Avoid any unnecessary travel with your horse at this time.

- Monitor your horse's re**al temperature prior to leaving your property and for 2-3 weeks after returning. Call the veterinary clinic if your horse's temperature exceeds 101.5 F

- Horses returning from travel should be quarantined for 3 weeks before rejoining the group. EHV-1 can take up to 14 days after exposure before clinical signs develop

We get that. But what if we said, that’s exactly why he was purchased to stand in Minnesota. Jonas K offers something different than any of the other trotting stallions in the state. We invite you to take a closer look with us. This read will be worth it.

Jonas K brings fresh bloodlines to MN. You may not have heard of his Swedish-owned World Champion sire, Centurion ATM (SJ’s Caviar). But you should. He broke the world record at just 2 years old in the Peter Haughton Memorial. He went on to have an extremely successful race career until retiring and standing stud at 5. Though he is now standing in the US, Centurion’s owner, the reknowned Tristan Sjoberg, stood him privately in Sweden for a year and bred 2 of his mares to him. Both mares got in foal, had two healthy babies, and both made it to the races. One was a filly and ended up taking a mark of 1:56. The other, was Jonas K— undefeated Grand Circuit-winning and track record-breaking trotter. We’ll take those odds any day.

Centurion ATM had a successful stint in Australia and is a top sire of 2 year olds there. He has since bred many other mares in the US but none are of racing age yet.

Centurion ATM is a full brother to World Champion Triumphant Caviar and a half brother to Prayer Session. Centurion’s dam produced foals amassing almost $3 million in earnings, and that’s not even counting the multiple foals that sold overseas.

Centurion ATM also passes on his “all business” nature. Trainer Ake Svanstedt only realized as he was behind the starting car in Jonas K’s first qualifier, that the c**t had never even seen a gate before, nor had he ever been to an actual racetrack. But you never would’ve known. He won his qualifier in 1:58.3 with a 26.4 last quarter on a track labeled only as “good.”

Jonas K’s sensible attitude is most evident however, when in just just second lifetime start, Jonas K beat horses much more experienced than he, breaking the track record at Plainridge and winning on the Grand Circuit stage.

Jonas K’s dam is Crown Classic 1:55 ($85,912), a Muscle Mass full sister to Supergirl Riley 1:51.3 ($461,713) and Muscle Hustle 1:52.2 ($198,568).

So you see, while you might need to trade in a traditional approach to breeding, Jonas K’s credentials are abounding. He brings pedigree, talent, a competitive attitude, and much more to the table.

Alan Sandbulte informed me that he has been getting some questions about Wind Me Up’s fertility. We have never had any issues with it in the several years I have had him at Bluff Country Equine. Last season we had 8 mares that I bred here and we had 67% first cycle conception rate and a 100% overall pregnancy rate at 14-16 days. I have attached the semen collection forms from 3 collections last year that show his semen counts and motility numbers.

Have you thought about your horse's teeth lately? Many dental issues can grow to be quite severe before problems such as weight loss or difficulty eating become apparent. Older horses in particular may struggle in the winter time due to increased caloric needs and difficulty chewing and consuming enough hay.

The horse pictured below was not showing any outward issues, but had large hooks on its rostral premolars that were coming into contact with the lower gumline.

With so much focus on year-end awards and the top horses in the industry, it is easy to overlook some
