Insight on hairless hamsters:

While there is a group out there that believes raising hairless hamsters is unethical, I’d like to shed a little light on this topic.

Hairless hamsters have no harder time regulating body temperature than furred hamsters, all hamsters are susceptible to cold and should be kept away from cold drafts. Their health and longevity is no worse than furred hamsters. Their care needs are not any different than that of furred hamsters. In fact, our last hairless to pass of OLD AGE was 2 years and 11 months old. How is it that we can say we want to better the health and longevity of hamsters without doing so in all genes? Every species of animal out there has had to be worked with to better the species. Hamsters are no different. The divide on communities is very large and many pet owners have been caught in crossfire, this is unfair to them. People are belittled every single day and torn down for simply talking to, adopting from, or mentioning a good experience with breeders who are also belittled, slandered, and had their conversations taken and talked about for fun. The science and research behind many is pushed aside for personal opinion. Opinion does NOT equal fact. Many cross that fine line and believe their way is the only way, which again, is opinion. Enjoy your pets, love them a little more, and know there isn’t only one righteous group that is the end all be all of pet keeping.

Hi ham fam! I am unable to access the PMs on this account for some reason! Until I can figure out why they aren't working, please PM my personal account Simon Maze

A few syrian pairings are taking place soon, one who will be paired on her next heat, the other which needs a few more weeks of rest and relaxation after the litter she had with her prior breeder!

The robos seem firm on not giving any litters till spring, but there are a couple litters of campbell's who just weaned! I prefer to hold them back longer to judge type and monitor for health before I pick my hold-backs, but I will be reaching out to homes who are already approved to adopt before posting who's left!

Anyways, say hello to the youngest syrian hamster in my program, Freddy Fazbear from Winterbell Hamstery

If anyone who's evacuating towards GA due to incoming cat5 Hurricane Milton and need a place to babysit their small animals ( rodents, reptiles, snakes, inverts ), i have some space and time.

Must provide the enclosure for the critters and have an idea of when you'll pick them back up.

Sadly, I don't have enough space for humans or cats/dogs, but for everything else, i can tetris with enclosures.

⚠️ this apply for people affected by Helene/power outages too.

WE ARE LOCATED IN PERRY, GA.

Welcome Steelcrest's Fergelicious (Fergie!)
Fergie is a hetED black (also sometimes called misty black) short haired syrian. Unfortunately due to a heart issue in my founding doe, her daughter who was held back for breeding is being retired to my full time pet, so we needed to bring in a new female to start back up with this fall. Fergie will need another couple months to grow into her breeding window, at which point she will be paired with my now elderly male, Winterbell's Cream Cheese (Golden LH Rex). From there she and a daughter will be paired to my other male, Sweet Sunset's Atticus (black dom spot LH). I'm hoping that we will have syrians back in the next by february 💕

Ms. Tofu, the absolute cuddliest bug of litter A (Pfizer x Carfax). This girl will be going to Juli Burton next month on transport!

Tofu's hobbies include sitting in your hand, snacking, and digging like crazy! She is out if a pairing that was specifically to improve for eye size, but sometimes you get some small eyed babies while looking for better ones. If she'd had nicer eye size she very well may have stayed here for breeding, but instead she's going to be a spoiled cuddle bug for her new family!

Touching baby hamsters?

Disclaimer: this is not something i recommend in cases of rescues, or generally with hamsters from pet stores. Please discuss with anyone who you source hamsters from about the tolerance of their lines, and know that with less tolerant or unpedigreed lines it comes with risks.

In hobby breeding, the ultimate goal is always to improve the species in captivity. This includes structure, color, temperament, and in many rodent species it also includes breeding out unwanted traits that are useful in the wild, but can worsen the bond between animal and owner in captivity.

Hamsters are prey animals, and they have a variety of behaviors that they use in the wild to ensure their survival. These include skittishness, a tendency to bite suspected predators, territorial behavior towards others in their space, and maternal aggression. Maternal aggression is a mother rodent's tendency to hurt or kill her children to recover resources when they suspect they may be in danger, or unable to raise them to adulthood.

In the mouse and rat fancies, which have been around significantly longer than the hamster fancy, this behavior is strictly disallowed by most reputable breeders, and individuals that display it are not used for breeding. Many hamster breeders use a similar system, breeding out maternal and territorial aggression. This allows our pups to br heavily monitored from a young age, as well as to give ENS and begin to desensitize pups to handling. This means when their eyes open at 2 weeks, they've already begun seeking me out for attention, which greatly improves the time I spend bonding with and getting to know each pup. I do this for all species, Syrians, Campbell's hybrids, and Roborovski Hamsters.

Additionally, I plan to post more pictures of young pups, to show other breeders and keepers that these improvements in the species are possible. Feel free to ask questions below, or send a PM if you have a question you feel like you can't get answered.

hi friends! Just a heads up i may be slow to reply this week, I unfortunately have a virus and its got me sleeping like 85% of the day. I'll be focusing on keeping up with socializing all the babies, so if you dont hear from me quickly please understand I will respond as soon as I'm well enough.
Additionally, the moderna × carfax litter are facing a bit of temperament issues. It's only affecting a few pups, but I will likely not be making those pups available to normal pet homes. All three blue pups seem good so far, but a few agoutis and opals have sub par temperaments, so I'll need to more extensively test each pup to understand where their issues lie so i can eliminate this issue by not including those pups in my program.
I've been extremely spoiled that Pfizer's litter is so incredible, but we were working against poor type there, so its been a really interesting experience to see poorer type with better temperament vs better type with poorer temperament 😅

A good look at the lovely girls I'm sending to Sweet Sunset Rodentry in a few weeks!
Fibromyalgia (or Fib) - Agouti, she carries argente and opal, and may carry black
Lyme Disease (or Lye) - Opal, carries argente and may carry black
These two girls are going to becme the foundation of a new campbells hybrid program, I absolutely cannot wait to see them grow up, and I hope I'll be able to get some of their future children or grandchildren one day 🥰

Health Testing for hamsters, is it a thing, and should you be doing it?
-
Health testing as you see it in cats, dogs, rats, reptiles, etc, really doesn't exist for hamsters. Even getting a hamster looked over by an exotic vet doesn't guarantee they won't pass of something congenital. There are absolutely ways to go about checking on your hamsters' health, and it is a good idea for all owners and breeders to check these things on their pets:

- Feel along the animals spine to ensure there are no bumps or abnormalities.

-Monitor their weight, and adjust their diet and enrichment as needed.
- If an animal is losing weight, check that they are getting an adequete protein/fiber/fat ratio. If they continue to lose weight, remove their wheel until cause of weight loss is found to prevent them from running off calories they can't afford to lose.
- If they are gaining weight, monitor that they are using their enrichment like wheels, and if they aren't consider switching to a different size or style (if your hamster won't use an upright wheel, try offering them an appropriately sized saucer. the 7" for robos and other dwarfs or the 11-12" for dwarfs (not robos, in my playpen the robos can rarely ever successfully push those) or syrians. Some hamster genuinely won't use an upright wheel, and there are ways to midigate improper saucer use, like attaching something to the center so they need to run closer to the edge for a straight back).

- Check their teeth. Learn a proper restraint hold for your species so you can regularly assess their teeth and pouch health. I recommend all owners desensitizing their hamsters to proper scruffing, and I start scruffing my pups as early as possible to help them not become stressed during health checks (let me know if you'd like me to make a video on how to properly scruff each species and check their teeth). Their teeth should be a proper length and a nice shade of yellow/orange, and should be generally the same length on both sides. White teeth or different length teeth mean there is likely something wrong.

-Monitor their poops! When you go to steal the poops from their cage, monitor that they're generally the same size and a consistant dark brown color. The poops should not be yellow or green, and they should not be smearing. These can be signs of wet tail in syrians, other bacterial infections in any species, or too much fresh food.

-Watch for bright clear eyes! Monitor for any milky-ness, these can be signs of age, but can also be signs of kidney issues.

You can also ketone test your hybrids, winter whites, and campbells dwarf hamsters to monitor for diabetes. I do so with all of my pups every other week until they are 12 weeks old, and do so with my adults as needed. If you'd like a post about ketone testing, please let me know!
(have a cute picture of hamster butts as tax 😆)

Its cuddle days over here!
This litter theme is going to be medical! Everyone will be named after a disease, syndrome, virus, etc! It'll be a few more weeks before most get names picked out, since I'll have to split them into smaller groups to be able to tell them apart 😅
