BUBBLE POP PARTY! 1.20.24
Recall Training
Who has heard that you can’t teach a husky to come back? 🙋🏻♀️
I’m here to tell you that we have trained all of our pups off leash, and it starts just like this— with simple games in a low-distraction environment.
Our “Recall Rules”:
▪️EVERY time your dog comes to you, praise like crazy! We want them thinking that being at our side is the BEST thing in the world!
▪️Never call your dog to do something unpleasant. Pro Tip: If it’s time to leave a play date, call your pup, play a quick game of tug as an immediate reward, and THEN leash them up to go!
▪️Never punish or scold your pup after they come to you, no matter how long you’ve been waiting! Would YOU want to return to someone if you knew they were going to scold you? Take a deep breath, reward your dog for coming back, and manage the situation better so that the next time you call them they can’t practice ignoring you!
▪️Do NOT use your recall cue unless you are 100% confident your dog will come to you! If they hear “Come, come, come!” over and over without associating it with a behavior, they will learn that the word doesn’t mean anything. We call this “poisoning the cue”, and it’s the reason that in our house we prefer to use “Here!” as our signal, instead of the overused “Come!”
▪️Do NOT allow your dog off-leash in an unfenced area until their recall is solid! Not only is this for safety reasons, but it also prevents our pups from practicing bad behavior!
▪️Finally, if at any point your dog does not respond to their recall cue, do NOT repeat it! Go get your dog (either approaching them slowly using a treat or else run AWAY from them to make it a game of chase), leash them up, and practice 2-3 short recalls before going back to what you were doing.
