Last Friday was a long day for us at the rescue. We had several horses that needed to be evaluated by our veterinarian, Dr. Maher, who specializes in lameness and major surgery cases.
The day was filled with mixed emotions, which is one of the challenges of being involved in rescue work. One horse may find the happy ending we all hope for, while another may not be so fortunate.
**Bad News First:**
**Pepe:**
Pepe has been having difficulty eating. Despite having his teeth floated and checked—both of which were fine—we were concerned about a mass on his throat latch. Initially, we hoped it was a benign fatty tumor, but unfortunately, that was not the case.
We decided to scope him, and the large mass in his guttural pouch is affecting his nerves, leading to complications with his swallowing. After testing, we confirmed that the mass is malignant. This news is devastating for all of us. Pepe is such an amazing horse who loves everyone. We will do right by him and ensure he has a peaceful passing on a good day.
**Pixie:**
Pixie is experiencing lameness in her hind end due to issues with her suspensories. Although she is not currently suffering and maintains a good quality of life, we are aware that her condition requires monitoring. She is still running, getting up and down without difficulty, and eating everything in sight. A previous owner has stepped up for her, and she will be retiring with them. While we are uncertain how long she will remain comfortable, we are grateful that she will spend her remaining days in a loving home.
**Gypsy:**
Despite a period of rest, Gypsy remains extremely sore. We will give her another six months to see if she simply needs more time to heal. If there is no improvement, her riding career will end, and she will transition to a companion horse.
**Good News:**
**Dama, Acapella, and Tormenta:**
All three of these Paso Fino mares have thin soles. However, their radiographs showed better results than we expected. We will put shoes on all three and re-evaluate their progress. The veterinarian is optimistic that they will respond well and be able to resume working.
**Sebona:**
We conducted a quick re-check on Sebona since he is now being ridden. I'm happy to report that he passed with flying colors! He is sound and ready for a job. Several applications are on file for him, and we will be reaching out to let those interested know he is ready to go.
We are committed to providing our horses with every opportunity to be healthy, happy, and sound. We are grateful for our amazing veterinary team, who help us diagnose and treat each horse that comes into our care.
