Yesterday evening, some of our dogs walking through the woods discovered a red-shouldered hawk fluttering on the ground just outside the fence along Glenridge Way. The hawk had injured its wing and was unable to fly. Though it was getting late, one dog owner called Central Florida Wildlife Trapping, at 321-215-5474, and reached Angel, who was nearby and came with his truck and equipment. Angel successfully netted and secured the hawk and said he would bring it to the Audubon Society in the morning. Happy ending thanks to some perceptive dogs and caring humans! 😊

Attention Winter Park residents who care about our wonderful dog park!

STOCKTON REEVES, candidate for WP City Commissioner in the upcoming election, recently met at the park with Friends board members Tom Nowicki and Joseph Brock and others. Afterwards, Mr. Reeves sent us the following message:

"Thank you for the opportunity to tour the property with you and discuss the importance of this park. There are many things that make our community both unique and desirable. I was dismayed to see the state of the park and would like, if elected, to see changes made to enhance the park. Working water fountains and spigots is a good start. I am available by phone, text, email and social media if anyone would like to reach out to me.

Happy to help.

Friends of Lake Baldwin Park invites all mayoral and city commission candidates in the upcoming election to come to the park and meet with Winter Park dog owners to discuss their positions on dog park related issues and other matters, and/or to send us a message which we will post on our page. Please contact Friends of Lake Baldwin Park on Facebook Messenger.

Election day is Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Friends of Lake Baldwin Park is a 501(c)(3) organization for the support of Lake Baldwin Park as an off-leash dog park. FOLBP does not support or endorse specific political candidates.

Yesterday evening a smallish alligator was seen swimming parallel to the park shoreline about 100+ ft out. The gator appeared to be fishing and made no attempt to move closer to the beach. The photo showing the gator's head was taken with a cell cam at 63x zoom. The yellow circle on the zoomed-out photo shows where the gator was and gives an idea how far out the gator was.

Our experience is that the few gators in Lake Baldwin generally avoid open beach areas where dogs roam and swim. However, this dynamic may have been altered by the recent lengthy closure of the beach and growth of tall grasses and swamp vegetation. Owners of swimming dogs are advised to closely monitor them and restrict them to beach areas where the grass has been mowed.

The city mowed the grass on most of the shoreline.

RIP Charles "Chuck" Rainey

Chuck Rainey, a longtime friend of the park who was a close and valued friend to many of us, passed away on December 31, 2022. Chuck is pictured here with his beloved Shelby, who was abandoned at the park but whom Chuck rescued and nourished back to health and happiness. Chuck's family is holding a Celebration of Life for Chuck this Sunday, February 12, 2023, 12pm - 2pm, at Maitland Civic Center (see card for info). All who knew Chuck are invited.

As stated in the notice below from the City's website, the dog park will reopen on Saturday, February 4, but LAKE ACCESS will be PROHIBITED. The lake water is still dangerous to dogs, and the lakefront will be closed off by a temporary fence.

A large canopy oak branch, located near the small pavilion, broke off at its base yesterday. It is more than 50 feet long and may be of interest to dogs at the park this weekend.

RIP Emma. You were loved by many and are missed. We know you are having fun running free and chasing lizards at Rainbow Bridge.
