Avian Flu in Cats and Ferrets - Yep it’s becoming a thing!
Update on this developing story - cats appear to be susceptible to catching H5N1 or avian flu from raw poultry or infected birds. Please know letting your cats outside or feeding them a raw diet increases their risk of exposure. We haven’t seen any feline cases in Florida but we believe it is coming. Ferrets have also contracted the virus from infected poultry.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

Why Finn Why?!?!

Finn’s family is moving and taking one of our most adored and adorable little guys. We could never get enough of Finn whether he was boarding, at PlayCamp or just here for a wellness check. He always made the rounds and brought us all lots of smiles. Thanks to Finn’s family for sharing him with us!

Travel safe and good luck in 2025 Finn. You will always be part of the Winter Park Vet Family.

We are staying up to date on the latest news regarding Librela. See more info on our website - client center - Librela.

Our Medical Director, Caitrine Hellenga DVM, has thoroughly read the report and the case studies. Please see her summarized response below. In short, based on the information we have at this time, we remain confident Librela is a good product whose benefits outweigh the rare possible risks. We will be posting a longer, more in depth response on our website shortly. We promise to stay informed on any new information.

"As the Medical Director for Winter Park Vet, and a pet parent using Librela on her own dog, I evaluated the FDA report on Librela adverse events carefully. What I found were some flaws in logic. My bottom line conclusion is that the reaction rate is rare (rare is defined as 10 years of age, which means that they could very well have had spinal disease and not just arthritis. The lack of full medical workups and the very geriatric age both cloud the issue. This makes it very hard to assess for Librela being a cause instead of Librela failing to work for off-label diseases of the nervous system. At the same time, information is power. We need to watch, we need to report, and we need to continue assessing as more information comes in. If you are concerned about side effects, please reach out to your veterinarian. I will keep giving my dog Ivy her Librela every month, as it has improved her ability to go on walks in comfort."

We are passionate about supporting our local
Community! Dr Delaney has spearheaded a program with the pre-vet club at UCF - a club WPVH has helped sponsor for years - to give aspiring vets hands on experience at Winter Park Vet.

Our newest intern is Kian and she is already getting tons of experience with exotics and learning how to scrub in for a sterile surgery!

Keep up the great work Kian, Dr Delaney and the rest of the WPVH team that create these learning opportunities.

Why do we do CT scans on all our dentals? Here is a great example!
Pancho had his second CT today and things are healing wonderfully from his Maxilla and Zygomatic fracture. He fractured them runnning into a wall at home. Pancho’s mom naturally assumed it was just a broken tooth and being the great dog mom she scheduled Pacho for a dental. Sure enough we found the maxilla and zygomatic arch were broken. If we had just done dental X-ray we would not have seen the whole picture.
This enabled us to increase pain management, change his diet and allow the fracture to heal. Totally different course of treatment than a regular dental extraction.
Check out those images! Thanks to Pacho’s for the yummy treats:)
