Today marks Safe Humane Chicago PALs Hayden's 106th day of being at Chicago Animal Care and Control. Instead of letting that keep her down, she’s still enjoying life.

Hayden made her way to CACC as a result of a cruelty case and has truly blossomed 💜! This once shy girl loves meeting people, running around for a few minutes, and cuddling.

Hayden is a smaller girl, around 35 lbs, asking to be your only pup.

Rescues, if you have room for an awesome only, please consider Hayden.

Friends & Family, if you’re looking for your one and only pup, I’d love for you to open your home to Hayden!

Hello loyal supporters!

As most of you know we have paused intakes temporairily. We hope to open up intakes in the next few months. However, the rescue is still operating! We have four long term residents at SFAR.

Those residents are Missy, Melody, Snowball and Vaughn.

🍓Missy is a semi feral cat that has been with us over a year. We only have one picture of her because she runs from humans. She has a safe and loving foster home where she will live out her remaining years. SFAR took her in when her owner passed away suddenly leaving her with nowhere to go. She's due for routine vet care. Missy is well over 12 years old and we want to make sure she is healthy.

🍓Melody is our other senior cat who will live out the rest of her years with her loving and devoted foster parents. Melody is also well into her senior years and we want to make sure funds are available for her vet care and routine supplies. She has also been with SFAR well over a year.

🍓Snowball has been with us over 2 years and is living in a loving foster home. He was rescued from an extremely abusive and neglectful situation. We tried for a long time to adopt him out with no success. Snowball is very loving but has some deep rooted behavior problems and so he will live out his years in his foster home with his foster mom, Andrea.

🍓Vaughn is also a long term resident but is still looking for his forever home! He is so fortunate to have a devoted and loving foster mom. Vaughn is an angel and we hope he will find his home soon! Until then SFAR is devoted to caring for all his needs.

SFAR is 100% devoted to caring for all our current residents but we need your help! All four animals need ongoing vet care as well as supplies. We are asking our loyal supporters to please make a donation today to help us care for these babies. We just can't do it without you.

To donate please use the paypal link https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/4464274.

If you would like to send a check or use another method to donate please contact us for further information. We thank you so much!

SFAR is a registered 501(c)(3) licensed animal rescue.

Can you believe Vaughn still hasn’t been adopted?? !!!!

Watch the video and see what a lover he is!!!
After having a very cruel and rough start to life Vaughn is now living like a king at Strawberry Fields Animal Rescue Illinois.

Vaughn is incredibly lucky to have a foster mom that has been 100% dedicated to his care and continued growth. Jenn Wurslin took Vaughn in a year ago. We want to thank Jenn for being a gold star foster mom.

Vaughn is staying with Auntie Andrea while his foster mom is out of town. He is perfectly behaved!! All he wants is a comfy bed to sleep (which might be his favorite thing to do), short walks and to be around people that love and adore him.

To learn more about Vaughn and our adoption process visit sfanimalrescueil.org/adopt. Please feel free to message us with any questions. You can also call the rescue at 8476134146.

We look forward to hearing from you soon !

💙VAUGHN💙

Our boy has been waiting for his adoptive home for over a year. This is a short excerpt about Vaughn and a tribute to what a good dog he is. I hope someone will read this and decide to give him a chance.

Vaughn, had a rough start when we rescued him from CACC. He was physically sick and very undersocialized. His foster moms and the volunteers at Strawberry Fields Animal Rescue Illinois all came together to care for him and the growth and progress has been nothing short of tremendous.

Vaughn has all these wonderful qualities:

💙crate trained
💙knows all his commands
💙listens to everything you tell him
💙walks like a dream on the leash and doesn’t react to other animals or people (maybe a quick glance and then goes on his way)
💙he’s not a barker
💙he’s very laid back and is content with short daily walks
💙he’s a bit of a couch potato so he’s happy to lay next to you and watch a movie
💙The thing he loves the most is to follow around his person and get lots of attention and belly rubs
💙Vaughn isn’t a puppy and he’s not a senior so he’s got a lot of life left to live!! (He’s about 6-7 years).
💙Vaughn just had his yearly physical, vaccines, bloodwork and got a totally clean bill of health !!

We’re happy to set up a meet and greet if you want to meet Vaughn! We can do a straight adoption or a foster to adopt. Vaughn can have other animal friends but would do best in a single pet household.

Last week Sheba lost her battle with lymphoma.
She was adopted by her foster mom just a few short months ago.
We rescued Sheba from Chicago Animal Control last summer. Her original name was Crumbles but her first foster mom, Lauren, gave her the name Sheba.
Sheba had the most kind spirit. She was an elderly girl with so much love in her heart.
When her first foster mom could no longer keep her our dedicated and gold star foster mom, Joan, took Sheba in.
Joan has fostered four dogs for us and three of them we had to say goodbye to all in a short time span.
Only a very special person could take in elderly animals, not knowing how much time they might have left, and dedicate all they have to their care.
Time for us is important. We want all the time we can with an animal we love but to an animal time has no meaning.
All they want for is unconditional love.
Sheba always had health problems but Joan cared for her with all the compassion in the world.

Please take the time to remember Sheba but also pray that her adoptive mom Joan can find some peace and solace in this time of grief.
We thank her for all the Strawberry Fields Animal Rescue Illinois animals she has loved and cared for.
Sheba passed away peacefully in her sleep with Joan by her side.

We have said goodbye to so many animals this year but they passed all knowing love. The grief and loss has been tremendous but we press forward the best we can.

The true miracle of animal rescue.

‼️The content of the video may be hard to watch for some people. In October of 2021 this was the state we found Snowball in and he had been kept a prisoner in that crate almost his whole life (10 years). ‼️

The photo on the left is of him today. He wanted to show off his new haircut. He has truly blossomed since he was rescued over a year ago. He can be a little bit of a mischievous little devil but as mischievous as he can be he’s 100 x’s more lovable and affectionate.

WE HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS!!!!

I apologize that i've been behind on updates and posts.
The exciting and wonderful news is that Sheba (formerly Crumbles) has been adopted!
She was adopted a few months ago by her foster mom.
She was with us close to a year and now she is home!

Sheba came to us last June from Chicago Animal Care and Control. This incredibly sweet senior girl was originally fostered by Lauren who loved Sheba dearly. Due to changes in Lauren's life she was no longer able to foster Sheba and that's when Joan took her in.

I would describe Joan as a super, gold star foster.
She fostered not one but four dogs for us.
Joan loves the seniors and always extends a hand to help when we have a dog in need.
Back in January, Joan offered to foster Sally for us. An incredibly sick dog, needing hospice care.
Joan and I talked and we knew that Sally may not live long but we knew that no matter how long Sally had we couldn't let her die at animal control. Sadly, Sally lived only a few short days before we had to make the decision to humanely euthanize her.

Joan is one of a kind. She is genuinely kind and selfless.
In fact, she is one of the kindest people I have ever met and she is not just a foster for Strawberry Fields Animal Rescue Illinois she and I have truly become friends.

Sheba has had a laundry list of medical issues. She is almost totally blind, has limited mobility, chronic ear issues and stomach issues. Sheba is probably close to 15 years old.

Not a lot of people would want a dog with so many problems but that didn't phase Joan. She was all in and diligently cared for and loved Sheba.

Thank you Joan for being an extraordinary human being.
Sheba is so lucky to have you as her mom. We also thank Joan for all the service she has done for the rescue.

We love you Sheba and Joan. Happy adoption dear Sheba!

Hello from Vaughn and Andrea!!

Please, watch the video for updates on our amazing and handsome boy, Vaughn!!

I had the pleasure of spending time with him today while he was at Redemption Road Rescue for his play group and socialization time with other dogs, which is great for him.
Thank you to Jenn, his foster mom, and Kasenya, who are both with Redemption Road and have done wonders for this boy.

He’s had quite the journey since he’s been with us and he’s ready to move on to the next phase in his life.

The next phase is adoption and to have a family of his own.

Hopefully a family he is with for the rest of his life. And the only reason I say hopefully is because life happens sometimes and that’s why I stopped using the term forever home because not every home is meant to be a forever home for an animal.

Some animals end up in a better situation if they are surrendered but again, that’s not every animal.
Every situation is different .
Every person is an individual and every animal is an individual and so we must learn to treat each differently, but ultimately have more compassion and less judgment when we don’t know the whole story, or what’s going on in someone’s life.

I have the utmost faith that his family is right around the corner
His foster family really loves him and he loves his foster family.

Oh boy, he loves anybody that will show him affection but there’s nothing quite like having a family of your own. And so we know, there is another stop for him on this journey, and we do hope wherever he goes that it will be his last.

To think back on when we first rescued Vaughn and to see all the obstacles he has overcome (thanks to his “village” of women that love him) and to see him get adopted would truly be a celebration and a victory for all of us women.

If you want to meet Vaughn or have any questions at all please reach out !!

We would be more than happy to speak with and then hopefully set up a meet and greet if it looks like it might be a potential match.
And if your not ready to adopt him, we would surely appreciate all of you kind people spreading the word that he’s ready to be adopted.

A side note about spreading the word: even if you think your group of friends might not be interested, maybe if they see the post they might have someone in their friend group that’s interested and that’s how the word gets out to more people home. Please take just one second to share because you just never know who’s looking.

Sharing his story makes you part of his village, and every little action counts, no matter how small you might think it is. That small action matters, and it counts for an animal in need. Thank you for caring.

In memory of Elle.
Another precious life that was only with us a short time.
We take solace in the fact that you knew love and a safe, warm home if for only a brief time.
We also have learned to appreciate that no matter how long or short we have these animals with us that we have tried our very best to give them the life that they always deserved.
All we can ever do is try our best to do right by these animals that continue over and over again to get the short end of the stick.
And as much as we love all our rescues we equally love and appreciate the amazing people that step forward to say I want to save one even though the ending isn’t always so happy.
Elle’s foster mom is one of those people who time and time again take in the most helpless and by society’s “standard” most unwanted animals:
The large breed dogs, the seniors and the sick.
Nancy, know that your never ending patience, love and selflessness inspires me to want to be a better person. You are one in a million.
Thank you for all you do and for standing by the side of your rescues during the good and the bad.

The phrase “ It takes A Village” is used quite often in animal rescue. I’ve heard that phrase so many times, but it wasn’t until Vaughn came into our lives that it really made sense to me.

When we rescued Vaughn in June of last year he was physically sick. He was heartworm positive. Vaughn was very timid and unsure of himself. It seemed he just had never had a chance to be a dog. That’s the impression I got from him. I also could see he really wanted to trust people and love people, but he just wasn’t quite sure but when the opportunity came for him to experience that love from a person he embraced it fully.

The first person that was part of Vaughn’s village was Sandra, his first foster mother. Sandra put her whole heart and soul into nursing him back to health, and she had him during his entire heartworm treatment. That was a true challenge because he had been cooped up at Chicago animal control for 5 to 6 months and now he was finally out. But because of the heartworm treatment Sandra and myself had to come up with mental exercises for him to do in place of physical exercise.

Sandra is a saint. She had never ending patience and love for Vaughn and he had that same love for her, but when he was done with his heartworm treatment after three months, it was time for him to move onto the next phase of his journey. Sandra was the first person that showed him that it was possible to have a human that loved him and that he could trust.

Vaughn’s current and second foster mother, Jenn has taken Vaughn into the second part of his journey. Now that he is healthy Jenn was able to work with him, helping him with his behavior challenges and with training exercises. Jenn gave him love, but also a lot of structure that he absolutely needed.

Jenn took him in when he had nowhere to go. He was in a boarding facility and was going kennel crazy. She was his angel that day he had to leave boarding and she’s had him ever since.

The other people that make up Vaughns Village is are the people at Strawberry Fields. That includes Megan, Amanda and myself.

Vaughn started his journey with Meghan who picked him up from Chicago animal control and took him to the vet and Meghan would also pick him up while he was with Sandra to. Megan would get him out of the house for short periods when he was undergoing heartworm treatment.

Several of us had many sleepless nights. At certain times we just didn’t know what the next step was for him or if he would have a home to go to. We were committed to him.

In conclusion, it really does take a village!!

Vaughn is ready now to move on to the final phase of his journey. He deserves to have a home and people that love him! He has made unbelievable strides!!!

He is not the same dog that came out of animal control. Today he has confidence and is able to be in play group with other dogs.

He is still working with Jenn and Kasenya from Redemption Road rescue. Kasenya is another part of Vaughn’s village. She has put in a lot of work with him as well. This is a dog that just wants to love people but also needs a lot of structure and we ask that you spread the word about Vaughn. Anyone interested in adopting Vaughn please contact us!!! Go ahead and fill out an adoption application at sfanimalrescueil.org/adopt

Thank you to Vaughn’s village!!
Also, please make a donation to help with Vaughn’s ongoing care. Thank you !!!

OMG!!! Look at our sweet Vaughn!
He is looking for the perfect Valentine and hopefully it will be you!
We have had Vaughn since June and he still hasn't found an adoptive home. He has been staying with his new foster mom for the past few months and is doing excellent! Here is his bio. To learn more about Vaughn or to set up a private meet and greet visit www.sfanimalrescueil.org/adopt. Thanks!!!

Meet Vaughn! This three year old brindle beefcake is as sweet as he is handsome. All smiles when he meets someone, this pup makes fast friends wherever he goes. While recovering from heartworm treatment, Vaughn's activity was kept to a minimum. Now that he is completely healed, his bubbly personality is starting to shine through. He loves his walks and would love a family that is active and likes to explore. A nice fenced in yard would be ideal, but is not a requirement. Vaughn can be strong on leash, but is getting better every day. Due to his size, we would like to see him go into an adult only home or a home with children over the age of 12 that could handle some of his youthful energy.

While undergoing treatments, Vaughn wasn't allowed to play or interact with other dogs so he is a little behind on his socialization. He seems to do well with dogs his size or smaller, but can be a little intimidated by larger dogs. To help him adjust to post treatment life, we have him working with a trainer once a month to help him gain his confidence around other dogs. He has not been cat tested, but (if interested) we can easily arrange that if required.

Our Mission

Our mission is to rescue senior dogs and dogs in need of hospice care from the most dire of situations so they can live out the rest of their lives in peace. They will be provided everything they need from medical care to a comfortable bed to lay their heads. Our rescue will ensure they will never endure pain again and only know love. They will be housed in our shelter or a loving foster home until they are adopted. My name is Andrea and I live my life to help animals in need. It is my passion and purpose in life. My dream, ever since I was a little girl, was to have my own rescue. Thank you for visiting my page. I am so grateful to each and every person that supports my mission.
