PAWS of Hertford County is a 501(c)(3), volunteer run non-profit animal rescue. Formed in 2006, and based in Hertford County, NC, we work collaboratively with Hertford County Animal Control to provide care and find homes for the abandoned animals within the county. Annually, we bring approximately 400 animals into our care. We also provide assistance to the community through low-cost spay/neuter a

Noel is a beautiful pit mix with the most gorgeous eyes. Those eyes often have a bit of concern in them since she doesn't have the most self-confidence. She absolutely loves other dogs and you can see her eyes shine with delight and a little bit of courage when she's with her doggy friends. She enjoys going for walks and is learning to sit for treats. Noel would require another dog in the home to help her feel more secure. Jasmine says hi everybody! She is a gorgeous calico girl new to PAWS. She is super sweet and enjoying regular meals and a warm place to sleep. Jasmine loves watching the volunteers and visitors, always curious about what is going on around her. She waits eagerly for her turn for pets and rubs and a heaping bowl of food. Tessa has lost a little over 4 pounds since her return and we couldn't be more proud of her!! We choose to celebrate every milestone no matter how small. We understand that Tessa is an older gal and some people prefer young, active puppies. We hope her forever home is out there but until we find it, we will continue to spoil her as much as we can!!

Our girl Suzie Q has such a pleasant, peaceful personality that you can't help but to relax when you're with her. She has such a peaceful vibe! When describing a good dog, Suzie Q is exactly what comes to mind. She's not too big, not too small, she's got just enough energy to have a good time but not so much that she's exhausting to deal with! She loves other dogs and her play style is usually more on the gentle side. Her playful side shines through when she and our other dogs play keep away with their favorite toys. Suzie Q enjoys going for strolls with our volunteers. She is a true southern belle and we have yet to hear her hound song. Our other hounds howl out with excitement but Suzie Q usually just quietly observes. We think she would do well in most any home environment. Her calm demeanor is truly remarkable. These boots are made for walking and that's just what they'll do. One of these days these boots are gonna walk on home with you! Boots has been at the shelter for quite a while and has seen many of his friends go home. That hasn't broken his spirit though. He still enjoys lounging in the window soaking up the sunbeams with his kitty friends. Boots is fairly laid back and would love to go home with someone who likes to binge watch their favorite shows with him. He'll try not to hog the remote! Ubi has been with us for an extended period of time, over 2 years. He has met lots of kitty friends and has watched many of them leave for their new homes. He's had several people come to meet him but one of his more outgoing roommates always steals the spotlight and has been the one chosen to be adopted. Ubi has become a little more outgoing and is no longer the wallflower he once was. When volunteers enter the room, he is usually one of the first to greet us, rubbing himself against our legs in hopes of attention and/or food. Ubi is so deserving of his turn in the spotlight or the sunbeams of a new home. If you're looking for a loving fella to curl up with when it's cold, Ubi would like the chance to be your guy! Golden Girl! Tessa still has plenty of pep in her step and loves going for walks. She's also content to sniff around the yard with her hound friends but would also be okay as an only dog. She is a pretty laid back gal but can be quitw vocal when treats are involved. This girl certainly has no problem singing for her supper! She does need to lose some weight and would love a family willing to help her shed some pounds. Tessa is a great girl and will make a wonderful companion! PICKLES IS ADOPTED!!

The transformation this little guy made is nothing short of remarkable. He went from running away from everyone to bravely going up to people. He may have been going to them hoping for treats but that's still a win!! We're going to miss our sweet, silly Pickles at the shelter but so excited for his new journey!

Marshall is the most adorable guy you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. He enjoys hanging out with the other dogs in our play yard and loves going for walks. He's the perfect blend of playful pup and couch potato. He's happy to run around after a toy but he's also content to climb in your lap. Marshall is a curious fella and is often the first one to run up on our deck and check out any visitors who stop by. You may not be sure of his breed by looking at him but when you hear him SING, it's pretty clear he has some beagle/hound in him. Marshall has lived in a home with another dog and cats before and did well with both. His previous owner stated he was housebroken but many dogs may need a little refresher, just to learn their new routine. Is Marshall the one for you?? Tessa has lost a little over 4 pounds since her return and we couldn't be more proud of her!! We choose to celebrate every milestone no matter how small. We understand that Tessa is an older gal and some people prefer young, active puppies. We hope her forever home is out there but until we find it, we will continue to spoil her as much as we can!!

Tessa couldn't contain her excitement for her dinner tonight! She's usually quiet in the car but as soon as we got to the drive thru window she began to sing the song of her people!!

Our sweet gal, Tessa, enjoying a little nap in our backroom while our younger dogs run around in the play yard. She may be older but can still keep up with the other dogs, she just needs a little recharge every now and then!!

Bronx' foster mom turned him outside and looked out to see him laid completely down in the snow! I guess it's safe to say he enjoys the snow!!

We got the call we've been waiting for!! Bronx' bloodwork is normal!! He will continue to be on a minimal dose of prednisone for 6-8 weeks and will need one more check up and then his recovery journey should be done!! We also found out that Bronx is now heartworm negative!! He tested positive last year but after receiving monthly treatment for heartworms, he's finally negative! Things are looking good for this big fella!!

Pickles making friends the other day at Chowan! Notice how quickly he SITS once he sees they have treats!! Our boy Pickles used to S-H-Y when he arrived at the shelter but this guy just keeps getting better and better with time! He also had some new people visit him at the shelter last night and he greeted them with curiosity and playfulness, not an ounce of worry in sight!

When Pickles first arrived his opinion on collars, leashes and walks was a big NOPE! He was originally afraid of the collar and leash and wasn't the easiest to suit up for a walkm The past couple weeks our volunteers have really been focusing on Pickles and his training and now collars and leashes are becoming a welcomed sight to him!! He's not 100% in his confidence level but the progress he's made in just a short time is nothing short of spectacular!!

We want to give a big shout out to our volunteers who have participated in Project Pickles 2025!! We have been doing daily training exercises with Pickles to increase his confidence and his improvement has been remarkable! He's a very intelligent boy who is very treat motivated. With continued training and a little bit of cheese, Pickles will be an extraordinary dog!!!

Tessa has lost a total of 2 pounds since her return and she's doing fabulous!! She absolutely loves walks and hanging out in the back yard.

Things were a little icy today but we were still able to make it safely to the shelter to care for the animals!! We actually had to use bags of cat litter to get our van from being stuck in the road!!
