This is 1 year old Alaskan Malamute Ranger. Shortly after Ranger's first birthday he had a change in personality. He stopped playing with his toys, growled at the other dogs in the home that he used to get along with, and started spending all day alone in his crate in self-isolation. Eventually his eyes became red and he started pawing at his face and when his family brought him to us we discovered he had a rare form of glaucoma that Malamutes can be prone to, and it had blinded him irreversibly despite his young age. Ranger had already adjusted to his blindness but we needed to enucleate his eyes to end his pain.
When we checked on Ranger and his family the day after the surgery we received the most heartwarming news. That very first morning post-op Ranger got out a toy he had received for Christmas that he had never once played with. Despite it being July, Ranger finally played with his Christmas gift for the first time, free of his pain. His family reports that he now happily throws his toys up in the air and plays, and no longer chooses to spend time alone in his crate. He is a happy boy that loves to play and engage with the family once again. Hearing this was a Christmas in July gift for us as well!
