Yesterday was the reopening of the Spaulding Visitor Center at Nez Perce National Historical Park https://www.nps.gov/nepe/index.htm in Idaho and finally Scott's King Salmon is on display for everyone to see! What an awesome exhibit!
If you get a chance stop by and check it out. Take time to visit this unique park that details the history and culture of the Nez Perce people and touches your heart.

Kassie Rost came by Anglers Cast yesterday to pick up her fish. A huge Northern Pike zeroed in on a school of perch chase fish. Beautiful catch! Beautiful mount!

In January of 2022 Anglers Cast finished up a King Salmon for Nez Perce National Historical Park. New exhibits for their museum were in the planning stages and they needed a fish. No one at that time knew when the exhibits would be completed.
A couple weeks ago Scott (Anglers Cast) received a letter from Nez Perce National Historical Park stating that the exhibits have been completed! We are so happy and excited for the park! Anglers Cast is honored to have a piece on display there!
If you have never been to this park (or even if you have) make a visit there an item on your bucket list. It is an amazing site filled with the history, traditions, and culture of the Nez Perce people. It will touch your heart and leave a lasting impression, and now, after May 31st there will be new exhibits to view!
Check out Scott's King Salmon. I bet it looks amazing!

A really beautiful Steelhead Trout finished for a customer a couple weeks ago.
Like all the fish done here, every bit of the fish is handpainted. Imagine scale tipping every scale on a fish this size!

Here is another fish where pictures just don't do it justice!
This Crevalle jack, a salt water fish caught in Hawaii, made its way to the Anglers Cast shop.
It has almost luminous colors. What a beauty! A fun fish to do!

Scott is back in the shop (off and on), but has put the brook trout mount on hold. He is currently working on customer fish which always come first.
In the meantime, we are posting a picture of a walleye that he did for a customer a couple months ago. First photo is of the walleye blank and second photo is of the finished mount.

Moving forward with that brook trout! Here are a couple of photos that show the original skin mount and the reproduction, now with eyes, head, tail and some of the fins. The remaining fins will be added after the painting stage.

So, back in the shop for a couple of days.
Have you ever really noticed what a fish eye looks like?
You can buy eyes that are already painted, but they are nothing near as realistic as these that Scott hand paints.The first pic shows the unpainted version for his brook trout mount setting in a block of foam, and the next pic shows the finished eyes. , ,

Here are a few pics of the brown trout that brought in a third place ribbon at the Nationals for Scott, last July. He calls it "Black Waters". Everything is hand cast and hand painted by Scott, including those cool little dragonflies.

While we wait for Scott to return to the shop we thought it would be fun to post some picture of the crazy little fish that won him the National championship back in July. Fish mounts of any kind are difficult to photograph because of the reflection. These taken by a professional photographer at the time of the competition do a nice job of showing the detail found on a shovel nosed sturgeon. Enjoy!

The white fish body in this photo is the resin reproduction of the original brook trout skin mount (also seen in this photo). Both fish bodies are now ready for assembly (attaching of the fins and head), which we will be showing in our next post.

Next step for casting that brook trout. First picture shows bedding that silicone covered fish in preparation for the mother mold. (A mother mold is needed to keep the silicone mold from distorting while casting.) The next picture shows first side of the mother mold and the last picture shows the complete mother mold. :) Stay tuned for upcoming pics of what it looks like when we remove it from the mother mold.

Here is that same brook trout that Anglers Cast is mounting for you. Before it gets put together and painted Anglers Cast makes a reproduction of it so an angler that does not keep the original fish can still get a beautiful brook trout mount to preserve that fishing memory forever!

Take out all those pins and you have a perfectly melded seam. Add some fin pockets for placing the fins and tail, and tomorrow we will show you some pics of molding the fins.

So here is the what it looks like when you put the original brook trout fish skin on to the previously hand carved form. (That is a whole lot of pins!) Beginning to look more like a fish with every step!

Next phase for that brook trout skin mount we were talking about.
1.) roughed out block of foam. 2) templates for the size and shape of fish. 3.) hand carved and sanded fish form with cast head attached.
Stay tuned for putting the original fish skin on this form and molding and casting of fins!
