Breakfast with Mae Mae

If you've been following along with this little series, you'll get a pretty good concept of the overall changes while we stretch out other parameters...

In reality what you'll see is the commitment to consistency with her nearly every day since she's been here with us.

Even in days we aren't here, we build and continue in some way.

It has it's reasons and uses, but most importantly it's about our relationship...

This isn't meant to shame anyone, unless it offends you, in which case we can talk about it. πŸ˜… The amount of times I hear people try to recall some of their dogs... If it was going to work, they'd be experts by now. 😐 There's certain things where we're honestly just "throwing crap at the wall, hoping it sticks". We aren't actually giving the dog any clear direction. If you find yourself saying "well, they're just a puppy" you'll soon graduate to "they just want to play" then before you know it your at "this dog's too old to learn". If it's not working, why keep doing it? Or if it works sometimes, what can you do to improve? Always make adjustments and put the time in, otherwise you're waisting more time "trying". You are teaching them that those words mean nothing. Without follow through, you are teaching them it's ok to ignore you and blow you off and they will continue to do so.

The holidays can be fun, yet stressful, for dogs and humans alike. As we near the end of the year, many people host Christmas and New Year parties, many people stay out/awake later than usual, they might have kids over that aren't usually around, and so many other changes to our relatively constant routines that we've set up for our dogs. Not to mention the constant and/or blinking Christmas lights!

So it's important to prepare the dog for this disruptive and stressful season. Take them places and just sit and hang out; let them become desensitized to chaos (I have a video about "Existence Socialization, and how to build it up, on my youtube channel). Also, invite people over, one or two at a time, and ask your dog to go to Place (I have a video for this on youtube, as well) and stay there for extended periods of time. Make noise, move quickly, do all the things that are going to happen during the holidays, except in small doses, so they can become comfortable with them before the possibly overwhelming real-life situations.

And, above all, be patient. Take your time, and don't give up on your dog just because they're having a hard time. β€οΈπŸ’•

If anyone is in the market, for breed specific winter wear, check out Voyagers K9 Apparel. Ghost is a bit of an odd size for the generic stuff and finding the right fit was a bit difficult. We had some coverage, and chafing issues with generic stuff. The website had a great breakdown for sizing and it made things easy. Even though he was a little large for the large, the scaling options were clear and easy enough for us to make a good selection. Today's cool enough as well as the next few days to start using it. We'll work some conditioning with it. We are hard on equipment but this seems like it's going to hold up nicely.

Just a friendly reminder, as we’ve notice in an uptick of β€œAdopt Don’t Shop” people on our recent posts β€”

β€’ We support responsible breeders.
β€’ We support purebred preservation breeders.
β€’ We support purebreds.
β€’ We support the responsible cropping and docking of dogs.
β€’ We support the choice to spay or neuter your pet at an older age, or not at all.
β€’ We support working dogs.
β€’ We support conformation dog shows.
β€’ We support show line and working line dogs.
β€’ We support responsible dog rescues.
β€’ We do NOT support PETA or HSUS.
β€’ We do NOT support β€œAdopt Don’t Shop.”
β€’ We support people’s right to buy their animals from wherever they choose β€” whether from a breeder or an animal shelter.

But most of all, we support responsible dog ownership.

Going to throw this out there, nail trimming and conditioning. To my fellow trainers, handlers, and owners. Ghost is difficult with his fronts especially, we've been working conditioning from multiple angles with some success. He's clearly had some bad associations with it, seems to be more common in dogs that have had the front dew claws removed. He gets overstimulated quickly. The only thing we haven't done is straight up pin him down and force him through it. But we're still at a point where we're trimming and waiting for the quicks to recede. This has been a process. We do get natural wear these days, but I'd like to try and help the process further. Right now, it's up to 3 nails max and done. So, it has improved. Just wondering if anyone out there has had similar experience and wouldn't mind sharing what's worked for you. Corlie goes to a groomer for hers, which they do great with and she's kept on a schedule for it. Ghost on the other hand would be a bit more problematic, but it is something we've discussed with them. They are willing to do it after hours and make the attempt with us. Scratch board is another option but more along the lines of natural wear. I'm open to any ideas, so don't be shy. This post is also to prove, not everyone is an expert in everything. When I had Dutch, I never had to cut his nails because we walked and they stayed maintained pretty well as a result. With the workload Ghost keeps, we are generally in a good space for that. We just have to get him where he needs to be first. Thank you for your time. It's not that I'm not willing to fight him for it, I just don't want to add to the bad association. We've made great strides in these last few months chipping away at it.
