Recovering โœจin styleโœจ

Demi, an 8 year old Skye Terrier was admitted to the neurology department for being down. Dr. Silver and the team performed a MRI scan which revealed FECM, or Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy. This is an acute injury to the spinal cord which is caused by fragments of fibrocartilage getting into the spine and causing obstruction to the blood vessels of the spinal cord, leading to spinal cord damage. Treatment for this is supportive care, time, and rest. Miss Demi was able to go home to her family shortly after her scan and is already on the road to recovery at home.

Handsome boy, Tucker, a 1yr Golden Retriever was recently seen by Dr. Murphy in the surgery department for a bilateral cryptorchid neuter and gastropexy. For being a larger dog, a gastropexy was recommended to prevent any issues in the future, such as GDV. Being cryptorchid happens to a handful of dogs and is a genetic condition in dogs where both testicles fail to descend into the sc***um and remain in the inguinal or abdominal region. This requires a little bit more of a complicated surgery than your average neuter, but Dr. Murphy and team was able to successfully complete the task and send this guy back home to his family. We loved seeing this sweet soul and happy to lend him a helping hand.

This is the face of a happy and comfortable Frenchie. Crouton, a 4-year-old male neutered French Bulldog, initially presented through our ER department for neck pain and was quickly referred to our neurology service. The team strongly suspected a problem with a disc in the cervical spine (neck region). Dr. Troxel performed a ventral slot on cervical discs 5-6. A ventral slot is similar to a hemilaminectomy, except neurologists must change their surgical approach by coming from the underside of the vertebra (near the throat area of the neck versus their back). Crouton stayed in the hospital the following days for supportive care, including IV fluids and pain medication. At the time of discharge, he was fully ambulatory and had no sign of incoordination. A recent check-in with his owner showed that Crouton is doing well post-op and returning to his usual self. Shout out to our incredible neurology team for their dedication to our patients & owners.

Can you believe this adorable face? The name behind those incredible ears is Elf, a 1-year-old Maine C**n male. Elf presented to our internal medicine service for a consultation due to chronic constipation; clinical signs developed early at about 6-7 weeks of age. Elf was admitted to our ICU the night before his de-obstipation procedure for supportive care, serial enemas, pain medication, and a MiraLAX infusion via a nasogastric tube that sits directly into his stomach. At the time of his procedure, Dr. Palladino discovered a congenital issue called atresia ani, which means that the a**l opening is smaller than usual. No surgery or medication will fix this, but continuation of long-term medications will help this little cutie pass stools more easily in the future. Luckily, Elf has a dedicated owner, and we look forward to seeing him back in the future for his rechecks. Elf won the hearts of our staff and got so many kisses during his hospital stay. Just look at that face!!!
