Limitations can be the slow death of your lesson business, OR you can get creative and thrive.

Story time: Way back in 2013, our riding school packed up and moved across town. The new facility was being built around us but the plan was for the arena to be done by the first week of January, when we resumed normal operation.

Of course the arena wasn’t completed by Jan 1, because construction. It wasn’t done the second week of Jan, either. It was more like the second week of Feb before the footing was spread. Oh, and there wasn’t a barn, so we were using our 2-horse trailer as a tack room. The tiny living room of the farmhouse became a temporary feed room and everything else was under a tarp.

Also (if you are familiar with Georgia winters this will not surprise you), it poured rain for two weeks straight, then it snowed, then there was a tornado warning, plus a wind advisory and a day of sleet for good measure. 🙄

At this time we had about 40 weekly riding students and the temptation was to cancel everything and hibernate until spring… but the horses and bank account had needs!

So we got creative. We quickly learned how to make unmounted lessons fun and engaging on the office floor, on days when going outside just wasn’t an option. And on dry days, everyone rode in the GIANT, HILLY unoccupied pasture. Beginners did this with the assistance of a Ground Buddy walking nearby; for students Blue Level and up, Nikki saddled up and taught the lesson from horseback.

Teaching for six weeks in this environment sounded impossible BUT…

At the end of that time, instructors and horses were FIT from walking up and down hills. The horses had done so much slow work in the field that they were extremely chill about it - even the horses that used to be firecrackers in an open space. Our students were balanced and confident from riding across varied terrain, and developing scrappy problem-solving skills. Cross-country lessons that spring were a breeze.

Lesson learned: you make excuses or you make it work.

Yes, it can be a challenge figuring out how to conduct safe, positive, productive lessons in the midst of an extreme heat wave, or a rainy season, or a tough economy, or when your horses all decide to go lame at once.

But necessity is the mother of invention. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Your hard times might just show you that you are more creative than you think!

Riding schools for children -

I used to teach children riding lessons a lot. It was really fun and rewarding to instill in young people care and respect for the horse, and good riding skills. I found chikdren far more receptive and empathetic than many adults, because they hadn’t been taught to ignore horses expressions to get something done.

The pressure from parents to accelerate the kids skills to more fun stuff, or to prevent the child’s boredom, was a steady presence in teaching- along with maintaining the school horses soundness and mental well-being from being ridden by beginners. Keeping lessons good for both horse and rider was a job of creativity and constant adjustment. I believe it can be done, but the culture at large doesn’t typically make it profitable, as many parents struggle to want to pay for lessons on sound husbandry and good riding basics. The kids want to canter, by God!

I have some firm beliefs about good riding stables, and I realize the expense and strain and adjustment is an ever pressing reality, I stand by these beliefs:

-children should learn good riding fundamentals first, and not progress to trotting, cantering, jumping until they have a good understanding of a balanced seat and can demonstrate it

-children should learn care of and respect for the horse comes before their entertainment. Grooming, tacking, warming up and cooling down, quitting an activity or adjusting if the horse is stressed, learning groundwork, etc, should be a non negotiable

-children should learn to feel a balanced horse to the extent possible. A beginner horse should not simply be a lame horse that tolerates them, but one to teach th em how to ride- children should not be set up for a future of kicking and pulling to get a horse to do something, but learn to feel how to direct a horse with their body, and to feel movement that is balanced, setting them up for a lifetime of being able to balance future horses.

- children should learn to read accurately equine expression and well-being. Children should not be taught to describe horses as lazy, stubborn, etc- these are taught by adults and children learn to adapt these views. The adults are responsible for setting the culture and views of horses and their handling.

Many riders struggle with normalizing tight, crooked, and unhappy horses because this is what they learn to ride on. The instructor is responsible for setting the culture of what their program entails, and I believe this means setting firm boundaries on what the purchasing client can expect, instead of catering to unreasonable demands to keep business. That is a whole can of worms in itself, but one worth opening.

Why should we bother teaching a horse collection?
(or lifting of the back)

Many riders struggle to understand why we would ask a horse to engage his or her core when we know it is difficult for the horse and often results in resistance at first.

Many mindful riders spend so much time reducing resistance that they don’t understand why you may need to add some resistance and are content to ride their horses on a loose rein however the horse would like to go. Unfortunately, this is not really beneficial to the horse.

It is true that lifting the back is very unnatural for the horse, but so is being ridden. In order for the horse to be able to carry our weight and maintain soundness, we need them to learn to lift their backs and engage their hind end. No matter what discipline you ride, a round horse will perform better and stay sound longer.

Once the horse understands what we are asking, he will start to look for the stretch since he will find it an easier and more comfortable way of going.
