Unfortunately I can't always post everything positive as life isn't just sunshine and rainbows.
Last week, the day before Thanksgiving, I made a hard decision to put down a mare I bought to hopefully be a broodmare and be a wonderful asset to my breeding program.
Unfortunately my poor lady had been battling chronic abscesses since July, and even on heavy vet recommended meds for a month and blood work pulled, she was getting worse.
The big theory is that the mare was fighting a foreign infection in the body (possibly cancer) and couldn't heal her feet. By the time she was laid to rest peacefully, she was on the verge of foundering along with her coffin bone attempting to poke out.
I've only lost 2 other horses in my life and that was a mare to colic and a warmblood baby last year. Both pretty sudden. So I've yet to go through the contemplation and the pressure of doing the right thing and stewing on all the "What ifs".
But as a breeder, I have a responsibility to not only my babies, but also to my mares. Having the vet constantly tell me that I'm doing right by my mare, helped in my decision.
Gucci, I'm so sorry your time on this earth was short, and I'm sorry you never got to make any beautiful babies, but I hope you're running pain free.
