Please join us in congratulating Liam's Song (now called Ricky) and his owner, Zoe, on their recent success at the Colonial Classic Horse Show! Here's what Zoe had to share with us this past week...

"My METS angel Ricky went to his first big big days long away show last weekend. We showed at PG equestrian center for colonial classic! We came out with ribbons in all of our classes!!!! 3rd 3rd and 6th out of 11. I’m so so lucky to have this boy. Icing on the cake is that Ricky’s owner before me, who placed him with METS was there and watched us. She and I have remained best friends since I adopted this sweet boy. Forever grateful I ended up with this boy!!!!!!"

We are so grateful to YOU, Zoe, for giving Ricky such an amazing home! He has thrived and reached his potential under your guidance and support these past couple of years, and we can't wait to see what you two accomplish next!

Daisy was rehomed 4 years ago this month to her amazing new owner, Gayle. We recently received an update from Gayle that Daisy "loves being a forest pony with her herd". We're happy to see Daisy, now 23 years old, looking so happy and healthy in her new home!

Gayle utilizes what's known as a "paddock paradise" track system to manage her herd, which encourages them to follow a path to find essentials, such as water, forage, shelter, etc. You can actually have a lot of fun designing your track, including adding different terrains (sand, pea gravel, etc.) and/or obstacles (logs, water, etc.). This setup encourages additional movement not typically seen in generic pasture turnout, which ultimately improves fitness, enrichment and overall physical/mental health by more closely simulating the degree of movement seen in wild horses.

How many of you utilize a track system with your horses? How many of you were unfamiliar with the concept until now? The below link is a great introduction to a track system. We highly recommend Googling the plethora of other paddock paradise track system resources available to find out how you may be able to employ the same type of setup on your farm, particularly if you're working with a smaller acreage.

*NOW AVAILABLE*

DIRECTORY (aka Pete) is a handsome 2011, 17.1h registered Thoroughbred gelding seeking a home as a companion horse. After retiring from racing on the flat, Pete ran hurdles before retiring to foxhunting, but was recently diagnosed with Kissing Spine. He could potentially be ridden by someone able and willing to invest in Kissing Spine surgery, reconditioning and training. That being said, this guy has a lot to offer on the ground too!

Pete has a personality that we feel would be ideal for someone interested in groundwork, doing liberty or trick training. He is sociable, motivated by treats and smart! He has a bit of a goofy demeanor to him and would probably be a fun project for someone.

This guy is UTD on everything, so he's ready to go! He lives outside 24/7, but also does well in a stall. He's good for the vet and farrier, is barefoot, eats 1x/day, and is overall a healthy boy.

Check out more info, photos and videos at Pete's link below and let us know if you could give him a great home!

*NOW AVAILABLE*

Here's another great prospect who is already off to a decent start in her ground training! SCARLET is a pretty 2023, ~14h (and growing) grade Quarter Horse filly looking for a home with someone who will set her up to succeed in life. She and her dam (Phoenix, also available) came to Maryland in September 2023 from the Bowie Auction in Texas when Scarlet.

Scarlet has received basic handling on the ground to the point where she can be caught (with the help of feed) and lead through obstacles, stands for the vet and farrier, and has start desensitization work with tarps, ba****ck pads and sprays. She needs an owner who can continue with establishing her ground manners and knowledge in preparation for her to start under saddle training in 2026.

If you feel you could be the right person for Scarlet, visit her page at the link below for additional information, photos and video. You can inquire about her on her page or email us at [email protected].

*NOW AVAILABLE*

Are you experienced and interested in raising and training a foal? Give Luna your consideration! This beautiful filly was born in April and, once weaned will be ready to move to her new home. Luna's mama, Phoenix, is feral and avoids human contact, so Luna has followed in her footsteps. Luna will need significant work on socialization and desensitization, but we are certain she'd be a worthwhile project!

Luna has her whole life ahead of her and the investment made into her training will be well worth it. Luna is expected to top out in the large pony/small horse category and is solidly built, so she should have the versatility to be able to fit a wide variety of riders once trained. The sky's the limit for this girl!

Check out additional information, photos and video at the link below. If you feel you can provide her with the guidance she needs to succeed in life, inquire about her through the link provided or email us at [email protected].

*NOW AVAILABLE!*

Are you looking for a training project to start from scratch? PHOENIX could be your gal!

This 2015, ~14.2h grade Quarter Horse mare is a blank slate and ready to start from the ground up. After being purchased from the Bowie Auction in Texas last year with a foal at her side, Phoenix has blossomed into a beautiful and healthy mare. She must have been bred shortly before going to auction last year, as she had another foal this past spring. Once weaned, she will be ready to start your way!

While Phoenix is unsure of human interaction, she's shown a curiosity and willingness to try. She would thrive with someone who has experience training and socializing feral horses. Being at a great age and size, she'll be a rewarding project for someone willing to invest the time and patience into her. She really has the potential to go in any direction under the right guidance.

Check out her full description, photos and video at the link below. If you feel you have what she needs to transform into a great equine citizen, hit the inquire button or email us at [email protected]!

We are happy to announce that Willow recently went to her new home with new owner Brooke, who had this to say about how Willow has been doing so far:

"Thank you so much for all your help! Willow has settled in so good, she’s fitting in perfectly! Her and my other mare Blue have already become best buds."

As you can see from these photos, Brooke and Willow have also already become best buds, hitting the trails together and loving it! Thank you, Brooke, for giving Willow a wonderful home!

07/19/2024

Sam the Soldier's owner just checked in to let us know that he is doing well while he continues to wait, for over 1 year now, for a new home. He recently got a clip job to help him handle this insane heat we've been having!

This guy has been used in the past for lessons, shows, hunter paces and trails. Now, he'd be great for someone looking to enjoy some easy pleasure/trail rides, or just looking for a nice companion horse. He's been out of work for a while, so will need someone who can provide him with a refresher before just hopping back on. But he's an experienced guy, so the hope is he'd come back into work easily.

Come on, guys. Look at that face... How can you resist?! 😍

Check out his listing at the link below and let us know if you're interested!

It's been over 2 years that Buddy has been in our program and he's still looking for a home! His owner recently checked in with us to let us know that he's doing well while he patiently waits for his new person to come along.

If you are looking for an almost blank slate that you can work with from scratch, this is your guy! Buddy has minimal handling and requires more experience than his owner can provide. He is personable and very obviously wants to interact with people, but just lacks trust and confidence. If you have the time and knowledge to invest in this guy, we think you'd be greatly rewarded!

Check out more of his info, photos and videos at the link below. Inquire through his page or email [email protected].

If you can't give Buddy a home yourself, please SHARE his post to help get the word out!

ALBERT'S CROSSING is still waiting for his new home and we're so surprised nobody has snatched this guy up! He's got it all going for him...

- Tall, dark and handsome
- Great personality
- Gets along with all horses
- Updated on everything

Not only would he be a great companion, we think he may also be an excellent candidate for someone wanting to dabble in ground/liberty work or trick training.

Give Albert's listing page a visit to read more about him and see additional photos/videos. His owner is uncertain how much longer he'll be able to stay where he is, so time is of the essence.

Inquire through his page or email us at [email protected]!

*PLACEMENT PENDING*

Who guessed HAFLINGER on our last post? If you did, KUDOS! You got it right!

MAX is an 11 year old, 15h Haflinger gelding seeking a home primarily as a companion, but may be able to handle the occasional walk-only trail/pleasure ride. He is in need of a home due to his owner's age and physical limitations making ownership increasingly difficult. They are hoping to find a home for Max that will love him the way he is and give him the undivided attention he so deserves.

Max was born bow-legged in both knees, which is why he is only suitable as a companion or very light riding horse. Don't let that sway you though! He is obviously a curious and very intelligent boy, so he could also be a great candidate for liberty and/or trick training.

Max is good with mares, a SUPER easy-keeper, UTD on everything except Coggins (which his owner may be willing to do), stands for the vet and farrier, loads, ties, sprays and bathes. Available for $1 to an excellent home, so let us know if that home is you!

Click on the link below for more info, photos and videos. Inquire through the link or email [email protected].

We are happy to announce that Doc was placed with long-time supporter and owner of multiple O2O horses, Candy at Highridge Farm-llc! Considering tomorrow’s holiday, it seems fitting to share this update from Candy on how Doc has been doing in his new home:

"Doc participated in our Red, White and Blue Benefit 4-H scholarship show and was wonderful. He has fit right in."

We couldn't be happier for Doc and know that he will get so much love from so many people at High Ridge. Thank you, Candy, for once again stepping up to provide a safe place for a horse in need!

*NOW AVAILABLE*

Are you looking for a mellow horse to join your herd? Maybe you have children or grandchildren who are into horses and need to find one that's safe to work around? Maybe you no longer want the excitement of a younger or more energetic steed. Well, RAVEN is your gal! This 1996, 14.3h Quarter Horse mare has the sweetest temperament and is looking for someone to give her a great retirement home due to her owner's declining health.

Raven has not been ridden in the last 3+ years, but may be able to handle an occasional pony ride with a child rider. She used to give her owner's grandchildren pony rides, so she's no stranger to that job. Raven is currently managed in a stall half-day and is turned out with mares. She's UTD on everything except Coggins and dental, which her owner could have done before she leaves for her new home.

Raven is all-around just a super sweet gal who could really use a home where she can get daily love and attention. Free to an exceptional home.

If you're looking for a horse like her, let us know! Visit the link below for more info, pics and video, or to click that inquire button!

*PLACEMENT PENDING*

SAMSON is a 20+ year old, 16.2h Draft gelding seeking a home where he can get all the love, care and attention he needs to thrive. Suspected to have once been a workhorse for the Amish, Samson then found himself at auction, was pulled by a good-hearted person who ultimately did not have the means to care for him, and then transitioned to his current home as a camp horse.

Samson has been dealing with chronic laminitis and founder in the right front that will require ongoing corrective care and maintenance. Currently, he is not sound due to a change in farrier, as well as the summer heat and bugs causing him to stomp endlessly. His owner is hopeful that with a change of environment where he can live inside during the heat of the day, as well as more extensive diagnostics and corrective care, Samson can be made more comfortable and may even be able to be lightly ridden again. He's certainly quiet enough under saddle to make it worth a try.

Samson is easy to work around, but he knows he's a BIG guy and can be a bit pushy for leading. Luckily, Samson's speeds are slow, slower and slowest...so even if he is taking you on a tour of the farm, he's not going very fast! This guy is top of the hierarchy in his herd, but only because he's big. He's very well-behaved with his herd mates and lives with both mares and geldings, so he'd be a great companion horse.

If you have a cool stall or run-in, and you're looking for a kind, wise old man to complete your herd, Samson could be your guy! Check out his complete profile, with info, pics and video below, and let us know if you're interested!

*NOW AVAILABLE!*

Meet REXFORD, a 19 year old, 16.2h registered Thoroughbred gelding suitable for English/Western pleasure/trail riding. Since retiring from racing, Ford has done a little bit of everything, from lessons to shows to trails. He has been in semi-retirement these past couple of years due to his owner's work situation. It is now the hope that he can find a new person who will be able to devote a little more time and attention that he enjoys and deserves.

Ford is trained to both English and Western aids and will go in both types of tack. He is naturally more of a forward mover, so would do best with an intermediate rider who can rides through their seat and leg. On the ground, Ford is easy to work around and would be suitable for an advanced beginner to intermediate handler. He's UTD, barefoot, ties, bathes, clips and loads. Free to an absolutely excellent home.

Check out more of Ford's information, photos and video at the link below and let us know if he could be the one for you!

*NOW AVAILABLE!*

NUMENOR (“Rory”) is a gorgeous 2013, 16.2h Trakehner gelding seeking a home as a companion. He was diagnosed as neurological in 2019/2020 after experiencing some behaviors under saddle that hinted toward something not being quite right. That being said, imaging and further diagnostics beyond a preliminary lameness exam were not performed. There may be a chance that, with further diagnostics, it is discovered that Rory can be ridden. However, that is not a guarantee and his owner wants to make sure he goes to someone who will accept him and want him as he is.

Rory is very smart and would thrive with a job. His owner has started working more with him on the ground and is doing liberty work, which he really seems to enjoy. A new owner wanting to dive deeper into this type of training would have a great time with this guy.

Rory is UTD on everything. He’s an easy-keeper and barefoot with excellent feet. He ties, clips, loads, bathes and stalls well. Rory is currently kept with geldings and takes a more dominant role in the herd, but is fair. He is free to an exceptional home.

Check out his information, photos and video at the link below and let us know if you can give him a great home!

*NOW AVAILABLE*

DILLON is a 10 year old, ~15h grade gelding seeking a home due to his owner's impending move and inability to take him and his herd mates (Nikki and Kiowa) with them. Kiowa received training as a 3 year old to desensitize to tack and received one backing under saddle. He has sat pretty all these years until his owner decided to get on him during our appointment with him so we could get pictures and videos. We held our breath and watched anxiously while his owner mounted from the ground, ba****ck...and Dillon stood quietly and walked off like it was no big deal! Clearly, this boy received a great foundation of training all those years ago and seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

All that being said, Dillon doesn't know much and will need someone able and willing to invest in his training. Once he receives the education he needs, the sky is the limit for this handsome boy! Dillon's personality shines. He is truly a puppy dog in a horse's body. He's curious, personable and just a fun guy to interact with.

Dillon is good with both mares and geldings, stands for the vet and farrier, lives outside 24/7, ties, is barefoot, and an easy-keeper. He is updated on farrier and deworming.

Price is negotiable to an excellent home.

There's been a lot of interest in Dillon so far, so if you're interested, be sure to apply soon! Check out additional photos, video and information at the link below and contact us today if interested!

Meet KIOWA, a ~20 year old, ~14h grade gelding in need of a companion or light riding home. Kiowa is looking for a home due to his owner's impending move and inability to take him and his herd mates (Nikki and Dillon) with them.

Kiowa has a gaited look and stance, but we were unable to determine if he actually is. He's a very kind boy who enjoys attention and would make a great addition to any herd. He has been used in the past for easy rides around the property, mostly at the walk. Kiowa has not been ridden in 4-5 years, but took to being mounted from the ground and ridden ba****ck with ease when we visited, despite how long it had been since last ridden. So we are hopeful he'd come around easily with a little refresher.

Kiowa is good with mares and geldings, stands for the vet and farrier, lives out 24/7, and is barefoot. He is updated on farrier and deworming. This gentleman would really love to be spoiled in his golden years. Can you be that person for him?

Check out more information, photos and video at the link below. Let us know if you can give him a safe place to land!

Price is negotiable to an excellent home.

METS Is Making History

The Maryland Equine Transition service is truly the first of its kind because it is a statewide initiative, developed and supported by the equine industry, to ensure that safe alternatives for horses needing homes are available and accessible to all owners who need the service.

The Maryland Horse Council (MHC) was the first horse council in the United States to support the S.A.F.E. Act, proposed federal legislation to prohibit shipping horses to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered. In doing so, the MHC recognized the corresponding need to create safe alternatives for horses that, for many reasons, may end up at-risk.

In June 2017, members of the MHC met with representatives from The Right Horse Initiative to discuss a potential partnership. In August 2017, about a dozen industry professionals met to brainstorm possibilities. It was at this meeting that the concept for METS was born.

The Right Horse Initiative awarded the MHC a generous 3-year grant to pilot test the program in early 2018. METS is making history and is a win-win-win for horses, owners, and the equine industry.
