Meet Quizzical Quartz! 🐴 This gorgeous 20-year-old OTTB mare doesn’t act her age—and she’s ready to steal your heart.

Quartz’s story is one of incredible resilience. She came to DEFHR as a neglect case, scoring just 1.5 on the body condition scale. After thriving in our rehabilitation and training programs, she went on to become a beloved beginner novice eventer. Now, life changes have brought her back to us, and she’s ready to find her next forever home.

Quartz is a dream for Thoroughbred lovers: Quartz has three comfortable gaits and is a nice, forward ride. While she has mild hock arthritis, she’s sound, low-maintenance, and currently thriving in 24/7 turnout. At this point in her career, Quartz will be looking for a pleasure home where she can enjoy flat work and the occasional small fence.

Could Quartz be the perfect addition to your family? 💕 Learn more about her at defhr.org/horses/quizzical-quartz/ and schedule a time to meet this incredible mare. She’s ready to embark on her next chapter—will it be with you?

Since it takes up to a year for a horse to fully grow out a healthy hoof, often times hoof neglect cases can be the most taxing rehabilitation on the organization in terms of time, resources and cost.

Yvonne, Zenyatta and Alaska arrived to DEFHR early 2023 from Carroll County and all were experiencing severe hoof neglect.

During rehabilitation, each of these ponies required specialized treatments that include corrective trimmings every 2-4 weeks (average trim schedule is every 6-8 weeks) and for the first few months these trims had to be in tandem with veterinary visits and radiographs.

We are thankful that their feet had not been compromised and they all have been fully rehabilitated and adopted into loving homes!

Healthy hooves are important! ❤️🐴 Join the Herd and support healthy hoof care and play a vital role in the recovery and ongoing well-being of horses in need throughout the year! Join the Herd today https://defhr.org/join-the-herd/

When it comes to hoof neglect, the stories that go viral are the ones where overgrown feet curl over into slipper feet... but hoof transformations are not just about getting the hooves to a healthy length!

Trevor (before/after front feet pictured) came to DEFHR in March 2023 suffering from neglect. The angles of his feet were extremely poor, resulting in lameness and discomfort. One of our farriers worked hard to get Trevor comfortable again!

Check out Trevor's 10 month hoof transformation! 🎉

Transformations come in many forms! 🐴

The hooves pictured on this post belong to Sylvie who came to DEFHR in May 2022. When animal control authorities found Sylvie, she was locked in a stall standing atop of over four feet of compacted manure. She had not seen daylight in months, if not years, and was in desperate need of farrier care. We are proud to show Sylvie's hoof rehabilitation progress just 9 months after she arrived at DEFHR!

Hoof neglect is one of the longest forms of rehabilitation and we have a dedicated team of amazing farriers who work alongside us at DEFHR.

Last year, three of our farriers worked on severe hoof neglect with really great outcomes, some of which will be highlighted this week—such as Sylvie (pictured here), Trevor, Yvonne, and Zenyatta. Toni diligently tends to our horses at both our remote facility and the main farm. Tim focuses on working with horses that were once feral, while Amanda and Toni possess a special talent for connecting with miniature horses. Together, Toni, Sara, and Sean have been instrumental in preparing three yearlings—Scooter, Hobbit, and Poppyseed—to become good equine citizens for farrier work, which essential not only for adoption but their long-term well-being.

On top of our challenging rehabilitation cases, all our farriers have a deep well of patience for our horses who, due to their histories and current management, aren’t always easy or safe to work on. Sometimes the horses are wet, sometimes they are dirty, sometimes they are challenging to work on for medical reasons, and sometimes for behavioral reasons. Each of these farriers go above and beyond for us, and they keep coming back because they believe in the mission of DEFHR and they are committed to helping us do it.

Transformations truly come in many forms and these amazing hoof care professionals are a fundamental part of the rehabilitation journey for the rescue horses at DEFHR.

We are so thankful for our farriers! Happy National Hoof Care Week to each of you! ❤️🐴

Meet Navi, a gentle soul with a playful heart who’s looking for her forever home. Known around the barn as Noel Navidad, this older Quarter Horse mare is a true sweetheart, full of kindness and charm. While Navi isn’t rideable due to a small, inoperable bone chip in her neck, she’s happy and comfortable living in the herd with daily Equioxx. She loves spending her days out in the pasture, often playing with her younger herd mates.

Navi thrives on routine. She’s always ready and waiting at the gate for her meals, and while she can be a bit nervous about haltering—likely due to her old neck injury—she responds beautifully to a soft, patient hand. Her gentle nature and willingness to please make her an absolute joy to care for.

This sweet mare has captured the hearts of everyone at the barn. Her morning greetings are unforgettable: a soft, quiet nicker that seems to say, "Good morning! Do you have a cookie for me?" It’s impossible not to fall in love with her.

Navi is an easy keeper, requiring just a simple daily ration balancer meal and plenty of love. She would thrive in a quiet, consistent home where she can be a cherished companion. If you’re looking to open your heart and home to a deserving mare, Navi is ready to become a part of your family. Visit https://defhr.org/horses/noel-navidad/ to learn more about this beautiful girl and give her the soft landing she so deserves.

Dapper Dylan's Story 🌟

Dylan came to DEFHR as a neglect case seized by animal control last August. He was a body condition score of a 2 out of 9 on the Henneke Body Condition Scale. Dylan is an older paso fino gelding who has stolen the hearts of many volunteers and staff in a short period of time. This is his progress just five months later! Dylan will be evaluated in our training program soon. Be on the look-out for updates on this handsome gentleman!

Adoptable horse ‘Offelia’ trailered offsite to an indoor today and even made a new friend! 🐱

Our trainers and horses have been thankful to get offsite, since the outdoor arenas at our farm have been frozen and ice covered. Trailering to an indoor has enabled some horses to stay in work as they prepare for their forever homes! Big thank you to Misty Meadows Stable for welcoming our trainers and horses for visits!

Happy adoption day, Hickory! 🎉

We could not be happier for this special boy and his new adopters! When this family came out to DEFHR in December for the The Lisbon Christmas Parade and Santa's Village, they met Hickory on our farm tours. Hickory was in our main barn greeting guests. His adopter's noticed his big personality, which compelled them to inquire about adoption! Congratulations, Hickory!

"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela.

At Days End Farm Horse Rescue we believe that making a lasting change for horses begins with education, so we offer a wide array of educational opportunities and programs. While DEFHR is located in Woodbine, Maryland, we strive to make a global impact for horses in need through our educational programs.

Every year we have international students join us at the farm in our Equine Care & Rehabilitation internship program. Interns in this program can expect to gain significant equine husbandry experience, learn how to recognize equine cruelty and neglect, and receive training in basic rehabilitation and horse psychology. After the internship is completed, the students share their knowledge and experience in their local community through educational presentations.

We love to see the change that our international interns make through what they have learned at Days End Farm Horse Rescue and have carried back to their communities around the world. ❤️🐴

For more information on our internship opportunities please visit https://defhr.org/internships/

The deadline to apply for our Summer 2025 internship is February 9!

Navi BEFORE ➡ Navi AFTER

Noel Navidad (known as 'Navi') came to DEFHR in December 2021 as a severe neglect case. She was a body condition score of 1 out of 9 on the Henneke Body Condition Scale, which means that she was emaciated or very thin. Navi has since made a full recovery and is now available for adoption through DEFHR's Guardian Program. She would love to find a non-riding companion home to live out her days receiving the love and attention she deserves! Learn more about Navi here:
