One question I always ask during an evaluation is “ why did you pick this breed?”
The most common answers are
- I love how they look
- I wanted a dog that would protect the home
- I used to own one before
Etc…..
Any of these answers are a disservice to your dog. Yes dogs are cute (especially when puppies). But that puppy will eventually grow and mature into a full adult.
Yes a dog can protect your home, but one of the BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS is that your dog will naturally know how too. Dogs NEED to be trained and taught how to protect. Can they be a deterrent? 100% but just because they bark does not mean they are going to do what a trained protection dog is capable of.
Having owned a dog of the same breed does not mean that the next dog you get will be just like your previous one. You have to account for their personalities, their different energy levels, and their genetics. You can have an amazing calm German Shepherd and get another one that is absolutely CRAZY.
Do your research before getting a dog. Learn what they require, know what they were bred for, and make sure you have the time, finances, and patience for that dog. I’ve come across way too many unfulfilled dogs, who become destructive, who bark excessively, and nip their family members because they are living an unfulfilled life.
Do better for your dog! A lot of the time it’s not your dog’s fault. FYI a big yard is NOT sufficient for your dog. ✌🏽
