This is great info! You guys know bloat is my biggest fear. This is why we have policies about meals and walks, we won’t walk a dog for an 30 mins-hour before/after meals.
Things you can do to avoid bloat is like he mentions, small meals and no activity before/after meals.

Hey Happy Tails! I just wanted to jump on and thank everyone for all of the well wishes for Maverick! He’s doing so well and goes for his second check up in a few weeks. He was out chasing his ball today and soaking up this sun!

I want to sum up my video with a post because I know the videos only stay on here so long.

The biggest things we learned thru everything with Maverick.

If you have any indications of a foreign body, just get the ultrasound if it doesn’t pick up on initial X-rays.

-Animal medical center has someone Monday- Friday by appointment only, VEG in Franklin has someone, and Nashville Speciality. The cost will probably be between $500-$800 depending on where and when you can get in. Your primary vet can also order a technician to come in if you’re in normal business hours.

If we had been able to get this done earlier (holiday made it difficult) we would have saved a lot of money and days of worry. We also would have known about the second piece of toy if we had done an ultrasound in February and not of went thru this again.

-if you decide to go with a scope procedure, it takes time to get in and try to get it out, if they can’t quickly it may be best to go into surgery to lower the time the dog is under anesthesia.

- if your dog ever eats anything, keep it locked up so you can compare when they do get it out during surgery. We didn’t realize Maverick had eaten two hunks of the chuck it stick so we never imagined that’s what this was again! The second piece has been in his stomach since Jan 2024, first piece was removed Feb 2024. Dogs can hold things in their stomach for even up to years.

I really hope this helps someone else not go thru the whole ordeal we went thru. Always listen to your gut with your animal, you know them best!

I know we will see this post many times this season- a few of them will be from me to make as many people see it as possible- I was shopping today and saw products I never would have guessed were rawhide until I looked at the ingredients. Always make sure to check the ingredients on everything you give your pets. The labels can be deceiving.

Every year the rawhides come out and people who don't understand buy them for their beloved dogs.
Just don't.

We strive to provide the best for our furry friends, but sometimes what seems like a harmless treat can hide potential dangers. There have been documented cases of dogs with pieces of rawhide lodged in their windpipe, stomach, or intestines, creating choking hazards and an intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting or diarrhea, can occur if rawhide irritates the digestive tract . Since rawhide is a byproduct of leather, some items pose a significant challenge to a dog’s digestive system when it comes to breaking down.

During the manufacturing process, rawhide is often soaked in a cocktail of chemicals to preserve it and enhance its flavor. These chemicals can include formaldehyde or chromium salts, hydrogen peroxide and bleach, which may pose risks to adult dogs and young puppies alike.

Safer alternatives like completely digestible Himalayan yak chews, antlers, dehydrated sweet potato chews, or any of the all meat jerky treats would be much better than rawhide.

Guys! How did I not know this was here! Catfeine Cat Cafe is the coolest place I’ve seen in so long. They work with local rescues, foster the cats, and you can go play with them! It’s $12/hour/person; they have coffee, drinks, etc. just go in and play with cats! This is socializing the cats, which will help them in their furever home! If you’re looking to adopt, foster, or just need cheap therapy! This is the place!
