The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District found deer ticks in Dakota County and Washington County this week. Deer ticks typically come out when the weather is above freezing, which means this week's 50-degree temperatures and little to no snow cover created an enticing environment for the ticks.

The clinic will be closed for Thanksgiving tomorrow and Friday.

There has been an increase in complex respiratory cases over the past year or so, with more dogs developing pneumonia or serious complications than is expected from typical cases of "kennel cough." We have seen a few cases that fit this pattern, BUT there is NO reason to believe there is a new disease or even an outbreak in our area.

If you’re worried about canine respiratory disease:

*Limit your dog’s contacts, especially transient contact with dogs of unknown health status.
*Keep your dog away from sick dogs!
*If your dog is sick, keep it away from other dogs!
*Vaccinate your dog against canine parainfluenza (CPIV) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (plus canine influenza, but vaccine availability is still an issue).

We will provide additional information as it becomes available from reputable sources.

As more cases of canine respiratory disease pop up throughout the U.S., we want to share a few best practices to ensure your dog stays healthy and safe this holiday season.
