Back to school
Is it that time already? With kids going back to school it means crayons, scented markers, glue and glue sticks, homework (keep that up so your dog doesn’t eat it!), library books (these too can become chew toys for you pets😬), lunch boxes (some snacks are not pet safe so keep these up), etc. so keep backpacks and lunch boxes out of reach from your furry friends. If however they get into something make sure to call us, an emergency clinic, or the pet poison helpline to be safe.
Also routines change and your pets might be a little off at first, after all they had everyone’s attention these past few months. They will ease into things but if they seem extra anxious we can recommend some things to help.

August 22nd is take your cat to the vet day 🐱
Do you take your cat in to the vet for routine and preventative care? Or do they only come in when they are sick and get reactive care? Prevention can be more cheaper in the long run than reactive care and diagnostics. Plus preventative care can help them live a longer healthier lifespan. They like dogs and humans need regular care. Cats are especially good at hiding stuff until their symptoms are advanced. So regular care and discussions about their health and wellbeing are important in catching things before they start or get too progressed. Plus regular visits are less scary and are easier on them than a once in a lifetime car ride and office visit that might send them into panic mode.
Now doctor visits can be scary regardless for cats so here are some tips to help calm them and ease your visit. You can come by for social visits with them for treats and attention, so that not all visits are scary. Use Feliway spray in their carrier or on a towel in the carrier to help calm them with feel good pheromones. Give them a special treat they don’t typically get in their carrier to make it a happy experience. If concerned we do have oral medication to help calm them for their visits if they have a higher stressed personality. When at the clinic we keep them to certain rooms that dogs are not in or schedule at quieter times to make their visits more peaceful.

Pet heat safety ☀️
Summer is here and with that comes the warm temperatures everyone loves here in the Midwest. Pets love it too but there are some safety concerns when it comes to pets and the heat!
🐾Limit your pets exposure to the heat and sun. Go out during cooler times of the day. Keep cats inside during the really hot days. Heat stroke is a common pet emergency this time of year.
🐾Provide them with access to fresh cold water!
🐾Avoid bringing your pets in the car as cars heat up and become dangerous quickly.
🐾Keep pets off asphalt and pavement as they heat up to very hot temperatures and can cause damage to their paws.

Fourth of July is coming 💥🇺🇸
Keep your pets safe over the holiday.
Biggest safety issue around the 4th is fireworks. It is best to keep your pets at home and cats inside as the loud noise puts them into a panic and they can run off. Also if they get too close to sparklers or fireworks they can get burned or injured.
Food risks like fatty foods (hotdogs, hamburgers, ribs, etc) can cause stomach issues. Skewers and corncobs can be a hazard. Salads with certain fruit or onions can pose a toxicity risk. Alcohol can also be a toxicity risk if ingested. Keep pets supervised or kenneled during your family cookout.

April is here and so are the ticks!
April is Lyme disease prevention month, know the facts and protect your pets. Use monthly preventatives as a first line of defense. If your dog is in high tick areas or you regularly pull off ticks from your dog the Lyme vaccine is strongly recommended as an additional protection.

It’s National Pet Id Week 🐾
Make sure to have some form of identification on your pet like an Id tag on their collar, a microchip, or a tracking collar. Pet identification is important to help your pet in the event they get away, and to better assure they get them home safely! Don’t forget to make sure your pets microchip is registered this is a very important step and keep them updated with all your current contact information.

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month ❤️
Heartworm disease is a very preventable disease. One monthly chewable tablet can help protect them. Yearly testing is also recommended to help insure that they are clear of any heartworms that may have popped up if there was any breakthrough in treatment.
