Many of the animals that come through the shelter at Yolo County Animal Services have medical issues that require outside veterinary specialists and specialized care. Without treatment, these animals may be considered unadoptable or have a very difficult time landing a forever home. That's where we come in!

Scar arrived at our shelter in December 2023 as a stray covered in a thick layer of mud. Once he was cleaned off and examined, it was clear that he had an eye condition that affected his vision and quality of life. Friends took action and got him appointments with specialists and eventually covered the cost of surgery to correct entropion (an abnormality where the eyelid rolls inward), cherry eye, and an infected tooth that caused swelling in his jaw.

Thanks to having these treatments covered by Friends, Scar was able to get a new lease on life now that he was able to see and eat without severe discomfort. He was adopted shortly after his surgery and is living his best life in a loving forever home! Your support this Big Day of Giving would help us save dogs like Scar.

Update Furiosa

In February of this year, a 4 month old kitten named Furiosa was brought to the shelter as a stray with a mangled leg and wound on her abdomen. After receiving preliminary care through our shelter veterinarian, Furiosa was transferred to the care of one of our amazing kitten fosters to recuperate. Thanks to prior donor support to Friends, we have been able to provide acupuncture and red laser therapy to stimulate healing in order to save Furiosa's leg.

With her leg well on its way to healing, Furiosa is another step closer to finding her forever home! Your support this Big Day of Giving would help us save cats and kittens like Furiosa.

Please help us reach our goal!

We need your help 🤲 This year for on November 28, we are rallying for support to provide essential medical care for our shelter animals. Our shelter currently does not have a vet on-site and we have had to begin relying on external vets to provide key services for our furry friends, including exams and spay/neuter procedures.

These services are essential and we need all the help we can get to stay on top of our constant influx of shelter dogs and cats. Giving Tuesday isn't for another couple of weeks but we sure could use a head start to try reaching our goal of $10k for veterinary care. From the moment she arrived at the shelter, it was clear that she had faced some challenges in her young life. Timid and fearful, Zara captured the hearts of the shelter staff with her gentle nature and longing for love.

During her initial examination, it was discovered that Zara was limping, which raised concerns about her mobility. Fortunately, the dedicated team at UCD Community Surgery stepped in and performed an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) to alleviate her discomfort. With the successful surgery and dedicated care, Zara bounced back stronger than ever, refusing to let any setback hinder her spirit.

Zara's favorite pastime is playing fetch, and she takes her role as the ultimate fetch partner very seriously.
