One of the cornerstones of training is the idea that it is a lifestyle routine, not a hit the metric, and never visit it again. If you do not maintain the skill, it will diminish

So if you need to put your dog in a silly outfit to farm for likes and laughs, but that gets you up to do the training rather than rot on the couch and say "there's tomorrow" this is me giving you my full support and permission to do just that

Last week, we built the "FOCUS" cue, and today, we are introducing a controlled distraction to proof the cue. Proofing is using a competing motivator to your dog that you have planned to ensure that even when distracted, your instructions work.

The Airplane Sit game uses food (or toys) in our hands to see if the dog can look away from the reward to us in close proximity

#TrainingTipTuesday Sticking with our challenge from yesterday, here's how to add distance to "bed" 1 - provide a couple warm up tries directly bext to your station or walking over with your dog so they clue into the game we're playing 2 - make it easy, only add a single pace of distance. When they achieve the standard, hold for 3 seconds and release (we will work duration separately) 3 - add another pace when you get back to back success. If your dog is confused, its ok to returb to no distance or 1 pace. 4 - end on a win. This should be a short and fun game. 3 to 5 minutes is plenty of practice. * If your dog is struggling, dont practice 10 bad attempts to end on a win of this behavior. Switch to a reliable cue, get the win and tomorrow is a new day to try again

Freddie has built the foundation behaviors, and now we are appmying them to walking past other dogs (Caspian) without reactivity. Her interest is there, but now Freddie finds alternative value and reward in working with her people. Well done! Maxie and Lila had their first lesson. Maxie is (sort of) pictured here working on calm leash skills with her mom. We are working on building clear criteria and communication around what behaviors will be rewarded with motion and which behaviors have us stop and reset. The key is not to rush leash training - practice does not make perfect...it makes permanent. The best training often looks like nothing at all. Yeti is working on his separation anxiety from his people. Previously, Yeti would pace, vocalize, and dig to try and follow his family. I can feel someones eye twitching already. Yes, I am allowing a retractable leash. This is the tool the owner wants to use, so instead of fighting it - I'm choosing to educate on how to use it diligently and effectively. We all see so many posts bemoaning uncontrolled off leash dogs rushing others. We built the foundation behaviors for Walter to face his challenge, On-leash reactivity to other dogs. Yesterday was about taking those foundation pieces and putting them into action.
