July 4th is a busy time for veterinary hospitals and animal shelters, and it’s easy to see why. Frightened dogs often jump fences, leading to injuries and lost pets. Unattended food gets gobbled up, causing stomach issues. Overheated dogs suffer from heat exhaustion. The list goes on.

The upside? We can anticipate these events, allowing us to plan for a safe and enjoyable Fourth for everyone. Here are five tips to ensure you and your pet have a fantastic Independence Day.

1. Keep the Barbecue Food Away

While it may be tempting to share your delicious barbecue feast with your furry friend, it’s best to resist. Many common barbecue foods, like ribs, chicken wings, and corn on the cob, can be hazardous to dogs. Bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries, while corn cobs can lead to blockages in the digestive tract. Instead, give your pup some dog-friendly treats or their favorite chew toy to keep them occupied.

2. Avoid Putting Glow-Sticks on Your Pet

Glow sticks and glow jewelry can add a festive flair to your 4th of July celebrations, but they pose a risk to your pets. If chewed, the contents of glow sticks can cause drooling, stomach irritation, and even vomiting. Keep these items out of reach to avoid any accidental ingestion. If you want your pet to join in the festivities, opt for a cute, patriotic bandana or collar instead.
